The video game industry has given us a few think-pieces over the last decades; Soma, The Stanley Parable, The Talos Principle, Disco Elysium... but 77p egg: Eggwife tends to be overlooked in this category. To the untrained eye, 77p egg: Eggwife may APPEAR to be a deranged collection of pixels assembled during a carbon-monoxide leak. This is, of course, because the untrained eye lacks the necessary intellectual architecture to comprehend it. Eggwife is not "played" so much as interrogated, its very malformed texture and baffling interaction demanding familiarity with postmodernism, Jungian psychology, and possibly advanced egg theory. Those complaining that it "makes no sense" are merely announcing, with admirable efficiency, that they have never truly confronted the limits of human consciousness. Indeed, enjoying Eggwife should probably require a license. Its subtle meditation on existence--man, egg, wife, the terrifying liminal space between egg and wife--operates on frequencies simply unavailable to the average consumer of videogames. While lesser minds occupy themselves with "stories", "objectives", and "basic visual coherence", the Eggwife connoisseur sits silently before the screen, nodding at something incomprehensible and whispering, "Yes. Obviously." It is not the greatest videogame ever created. Calling it a videogame at all is already an insult. I give it a 77 out of 10 score.
Every time the developers of postal went "no, we can't pot that in, its too immature and crude", they sent that idea to this game. I am almost annoyed how well designed this game is. It's such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but the weapons, enemies and level design are superb. the imsim elements are great to mess around with, even the puzzles in the levels are fun. The music is great, everything is just so finely crafted.
