I'm currently about 40 hours into the game, and I'm really enjoying it. There's clear love and polish that has been put into it. It's currently a bit rough around the edges in a few places, including a good deal bugs, but most of them I've encountered haven't been game breaking, just temporary setbacks that just need a little experimenting to work around. With that said, the devs are extremely responsive on discord to the bug reports, and I've seen them manually fixing save files for other people when they've run into a few gamebreaking bugs. I was originally considering waiting until I finished the game to provide a review, but I've been really impressed with the devs, I feel like they are going to not only iron out the bugs but also deliver nice quality of life features later on, so I wanted to give the rating a nice boost now while it's still fresh as a nice release. I'll see if I update my review later with more details once I've completed the game. Anyway, I'm about halfway through the story campaign (I think), though I have unlocked everything that's currently available in the tech tree. I've been thoroughly enjoying my time and think it's well worth the $25 price tag. The core gameplay loop of buying/upgrading what you can with the day's income, designing trails, and juggling work assignments is very engaging. Rescuing hikers who've had accidents is simple, but still feels a bit rewarding, and the quests so far have added a good variety. I definitely recommend the game..

Above the Snow is a unique title in a sea of management games in terms of its setting - you have to bring a decrepit old mountain hotel back in to use, attract climbers to stay with you and build them the trails they then go and climb in the mountains. The campaign takes about 11-12 hours on the normal difficulty, but doesn't present too many challenges once you've realised that you can just spam helicopter drops of supplies and that money is very rarely an issue. The fun is in building out your trails, and sending the groups on the way. Sadly, this side of the game becomes a little simplistic and weak - you can build a trail and then upgrade it with climbing chains, barriers and even a cable car, and doing so reduces the difficulty. Unfortunately these upgrades aren't visible on the map (yes, even a cable car) and the climbers themselves are hilariously stupid and regularly get themselves in to trouble. Rescuing them is a doddle though and not a challenge as expected - I never staffed the rescue centre. Fixing up your hotel is the other area you'll spend your time - opening up new rooms, plopping down beds and other entertainment. This scratches the normal management game itch, as you try and fill demand bars (comfort, storage and entertainment), but again rapidly becomes a bit shallow and easy to cheese. Who said you couldn't have a room just full of TV sets to get the +15 bonus eh? It'd be nice to see a bit more complexity in the overall management game aspects - such as scheduling of jobs, specific room requirements (eg: a bedroom needs beds, wardrobe, lamp, bedside table) and a wider variety of items to fill the space. Yet despite all the above, it comes together in to a well-done cohesive whole. Heck, I did the campaign in a weekend. I just wish it had more to offer, and deeper systems.

Very charming management game. The beginning can feel a little overwhelming as you don't have enough beds, don't have trails established to the areas people want to visit, and are low on resources, but once you realise it's OK to let the guests suffer a bit at the start, and in fact meeting all their demands actually can be detrimental as your star rating goes up and then their requirements increase even further. It's best to take things slow, have some unsatisfied guests, but overall a majority who are happy, and the pressure vanishes. There are a few QoL improvements that could be made, such as a global task management window so you don't have to spend as much time changing views and selecting buildings/items to assign your team. That's probably my biggest complaint so far. There have also been a couple bugs, including some soft-locks, but the dev team have been super responsive to these, releasing fixes and offering to fix savefiles sent to them to fix any softlock issues without you needing to restart. Their response time has been exemplary. Overall I fully trust the issues will be resolved, and I'm sure future updates will only make the game better and more enjoyable, so I highly recommend this game to anybody who enjoys management games with a story.

I'm not usually a management sim person. I saw the screenshots, loved the 1960s aesthetic, thought it would be a chill game where I just arrange furniture and serve coffee. The game is that. But it's also something else entirely. At first, it's cozy. You build, you decorate, you watch the snow fall. The art direction is stunning — the Kodachrome colors, the way light hits the wooden furniture, the contrast between the cold blue outside and the warm orange inside. I took so many screenshots my hard drive started complaining. Then the game starts asking you questions. Not in a cutscene. Not in dialogue. It asks you through gameplay. Do you have enough supplies? Did you prepare? Who do you prioritize when things go wrong? There's a moment late in the game — I won't spoil it — where a character who's been a thorn in your side the whole time ends up in trouble. The game doesn't give you a dialogue wheel with "save him" or "let him die." It just presents you with the situation, and you have to decide what to do with your resources, your time, your people. I sat there for five minutes. My roommate asked what was wrong. I said I had to decide if a fictional businessman deserved to freeze to death. That's not a normal management game. Above the Snow is cozy on the surface, but underneath it's about something real. About who you choose to help, what you prepare for, what kind of person you are when the storm comes.

Alpine lodge management, quite fresh idea in the world of management games, and it definitely works to a point it can get rather addictive. Rare thing to see these days. Basic mechanics are good, but leave a bit to wish for, as they could be deeper in many ways. There are some annoyances, like red marked no build-areas inside shelter where it does not make any sense, blocking your creativity. But as a whole, still a gem you want to have in your library if you are in the genre.
