Very cozy and well-paced game. I’m more than 15 hours in and only just reached my first ascension, which says a lot about how comfortable the pacing feels. There’s no unnecessary pressure, no rush wverything unfolds in a calm, natural rhythm. The core mechanics were completely new to me, and I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging and fresh they feel. I havent played anything quite like this before. There are occasional minor bugs, but interestingly, most of them tend to resolve themselves over time and never really breakk the flow of the game. Overall, it’s a very atmospheric and relaxing experience, especially if you enjoy slow progression, experimentation, and a sense of quiet mastery.

You don't see a whole lot of games so clearly following in the footsteps of Cultist Simulator. It's really wearing that inspiration on it's sleeve. And since Cultist Simulator is my favorite game, it's hard for me to say no. On that comparison, it's interesting to be playing in a world where magic is just a thing people are used to. You aren't exploring a hidden and protected world, you're more an alchemist trying to master their craft. It leads to a game that feels less opaque. There is no choice between bird or worm, you know? Which tonally fits for this game. It's not a roguelike. Death is not constantly waiting around every corner. I wouldn't even say death is waiting in the same time zone. Still, it has that sense of discovering and mastering the world that you're in. On that note... The big change is the grimoire. If you make a potion for the first time it gets added to the grimoire and the grimoire will tell you exactly what the requirements to make that potion are (AFTER you've made it). It's basically playing with the wiki open but the wiki refuses to spoil the puzzle for you until you've done it at least once yourself. And it doesn't limit itself to potions. You want a specific resource or tool? The grimoire will tell you EXACTLY where it can be found in the world. Honestly it's a bit much for me. It takes away a little bit of that sense of discovery. I would've liked a grimoire that unlocks information a bit more slowly. Maybe showing the best you've done with a recipe and slowly updating as you make it more efficiently, with some kind of mastery mark if you actually manage to make it as efficiently as possible. Or only showing locations for resources that you personally have already gotten them from. That KIND of thing. Mind you that's all personal preference, but a gamemode like that would be way more my style. As is, the game feels a bit TOO easy and almost on rails. I'm never really wondering what my next step will be, you know? I'm not charting a course through the unknown. I'm following a map. Another change that seems strictly good, and yet I can't help but wonder if its the source of a lot of the negative reviews this game gets, is that if you have any character not currently working the game will automatically pause. It makes it easy to avoid waste and helps you stay ahead on resources. But in real time, pausing as much as possible can only be slower, right? I wonder if maybe the fact that the game doesn't, by default, move unless you have everyone working might be contributing to people's feeling that the game is more micromanagy. Or the feeling that getting resources is a slog. I don't know. It didn't bother me at all. I don't know. Just a thought.

It's a more streamlined and less obtuse Cultist Simulator. If that made sense to you, you can stop reading, you already know what this game is about; if you're confused, here's the explanation. The game plays as a card game with timers. You have a main character that can perform various actions by dragging his card into slots on other cards, and what you can do is context-sensitive considering what and where you combine cards. For instance, drag your character to your home, and you'll rest. Drag your character to a forest and you'll explore it. Drag a turnip into your character and you'll eat it. You get the idea. Each action will take a certain amount of irl time to complete. (don't worry, it's very quick and you can fast-forward time, so it's not like a mobile timer game). Time running adds a strategic component because some cards are perishable after a while, so some planning will be required to advance and do everything you want. It's not a hard system to grasp, but it grows in depth and complexity as the game introduces new mechanics and the elements of the cards themselves start to become relevant to make potions and rituals. There is a very light "survival" aspect in place that is easily conquerable but always present, having to manage rest, hunger and good standing with the Inquisition, so despite having a relaxed pace you will be quite busy micromanaging. There's also a quite useful grimoire that will guide you through your first steps, although I'd suggest to use it only if you run into a wall and can't advance. One of the main charms of these kinds of games is slowly finding out new stuff to do while you experiment with new features and combinations. Lastly, if you enjoyed this game and want more like it, I'll suggest getting Cultist Simulator and Book of Hours, as they function on the same card/timer system and have quite an enjoyable vibe to them, not to mention top quality writing.

A less opaque, more forgiving Cultist Simulator. A farming sim done entirely through menus. This game caters to a niche audience of a niche audience, and it's something I didn't know I've been waiting for. Steam Deck friendly right at launch. Definitely something I'm looking forward to getting to know better.
