Story is somewhat cliche, but not a dealbreaker. Characters are charming (I found myself gravitating towards Cyril and Ariana plus the main villain), though they can be a bit shallow for some. The ending is definitely it's weakest part, feels pretty railroady, sadly. If you're more of a talker and not a fighter, then you'll probably find it disappointing that you can't talk the main villain down into a surrender. The choices are fun, the characters are pretty charming, and story & worldbuilding are decent but nothing standout. If you enjoy IF games, then this is for you.

Elegant, Character-Driven Drama There are three aspects to Arcadie: Second Born that make it special to me. 1) Restraint This author has a deft touch; they seem to know some common pitfalls and take care to avoid them. Thus, the cast is modest, the scope of the story isn’t too big, and none of the ideas are too outlandish. The prose may appear rather basic, but that’s why it works; it’s not bogged down by excessively detailed descriptions, flashbacks or monologues. It leaves room for your imagination to fill in the blanks. All of this made the whole thing so much more immersive. As an aside, this was written to be stand-alone, so you’re getting a complete experience. How refreshing! I will add there’s now a sequel in the works, though. I’m interested to see how they’ll continue this story. 2) Characters The small cast works greatly in the story’s favour. While some side characters don’t get much time in the limelight, all the major characters have their personalities established quickly and efficiently, and they’re further fleshed out over the course of the story. Your two main companions (and romance options) are especially stellar; they differ in opinion but aren’t diametrically opposed on everything. They feel real and internally consistent. Their personalities make sense within the world and the political positions they inhabit. A lot of ‘show, don’t tell’ is used for the characterisation as well. Much like the prose, characters won’t communicate every nuance or inner thought. A pause or something left unsaid can reveal something, too. When they do choose to say something, it will be relevant and based on their personality and worldview. My only criticism here is that your two main companions can—rarely—feel a little similar in ‘voice’, but this is usually compensated for by body language or plain old context. And, failing that, there’s the strong character establishment to fall back on. 3) Agency This interactive novel is more of a linear one; you won’t make sweeping changes to the plot or the world. It’s more about dealing with the crisis that’s thrust upon you early in the story. There are stat checks, but they’re not intrusive and the results feel like the consequences of roleplaying a character. That roleplaying is the real focus; this is where your agency lies. You craft your character’s personality through what you say and do. Those same choices also affect how your companions see you. Yes, this matters; they have agency too! I’ve loved experimenting with this system. Your companions can like you as a person, but not as a political figure, or vice versa. They have their own thoughts and feelings, so they may choose to agree to disagree, or to decide something is a bridge too far. I find this very compelling. Obviously, the limits of an interactive novel written by one person still apply. The author can never account for every roleplaying option, but I’ll say they did their best to include a lot of them. I was pleasantly surprised with my options in almost all scenarios, especially when the lack of stat checks allowed me to be as consistent or as fickle as I pleased. To be thorough, I’ll say there were two instances where I sorely needed more options. There’s a scene with two prisoners that feels too brief and doesn’t give me the chance to roleplay it how I want. The finale also feels narrow; I understand it’s tallying up your roleplaying up until that point, but it’s the only time I feel the plot takes precedence over characters. Despite that, I think the ending is satisfying and fits the story well. In conclusion I wholeheartedly recommend this! I can’t wait to see if the sequel is just as good. The author seems to have a good head on their shoulders, so I’m hopeful.

I was a bit hesitant buying a game that's just an interactive novel, but the story and writing are really good, and it has a decent amount of content/length (I'm a fast reader and a single playthrough took me almost five and a half hours). The characters and world are well fleshed out, and I can't really think of anything I'd complain about, apart from the demo's saves not being compatible with the full game.

Well, now I need a sequel. What a truly fantastic story. The only complaint that I have is that it ended too abruptly. Maybe it was just the ending I got (I have no idea how much your choices actually change the course of the games events), but it felt like the ending could have been flushed out a bit more. Other than that, however, every minute of this story was a joy to read. Between some nice writing, great characters, and some genuine twists that literally left me shocked, I could easily see myself playing this again in the future. I want to do a new playthrough where I am just a complete bastard to everyone. That honestly sounds kind of fun. I do deeply hope there is a sequel, considering some of the very tantalizing questions the ending left me with. Other than that, there isn't much else to say. Good game, and I'm glad I played it.

I give it a neutral review. The story is rather cliche and lacks depth. Relationships seem to be romantic only and nothing like friendship. Romanceable characters are twice your age and you should be interested in them straight away because...? If you don't nothing really happens. Feels more like a backstory for the real story yet to be told.
