I enjoyed this game a lot. I think anyone that enjoys piecing a story together will enjoy it as well, because that is a requirement - the game will hand you story beats and you need to stitch them together (although there is a 'Quests' menu that will collate things together, but it's.. massive because it encompasses everything from everywhere). Over a 20+ hour playthrough, I understand now why it bounced between eras, why there were so many characters.. and I don't regret the playthrough or purchase because it was, ultimately, very satisfying. The "final" story piece especially was poignant. As far as gameplay goes, this was fine as well. I don't know when they were added, but the ability to set the game speed higher than 1x seems cool, and having the ability to "skip ahead" 4, 8, or 12 hours is neat. I played at 1x speed but used a bit of skipping to get the final achievement I needed to get that was related to resource production. The game is not perfect - there are typos sometimes, graphical problems, but nothing that was critical or game-breaking - but it is actively being worked on. The last developer roadmap post indicates some systems are going to be significantly reworked, and that may make the gameplay experience even better. Long review short: if you're curious, are okay getting a drip-fed story, and want a hybrid playstyle (active to prioritize short-term things, idle for longer researches), this is a great game for the price.
Bought this on the promise of "Twin Peaks idle mystery game," which is was not. If anything, it's closer in scope and scale to 100 Years of Solitude idle game," surprising with a multi-generational story. As a game, this is a bog standard idler with very little innovation. As a narrative tied into an idle game, it's pretty fresh. Some of the later jumps are a little far fetched (sna-hail), but because you're waiting for them, you're invested. I enjoyed my time with it, and probably liked it more in this form than if it were a novel. 3/5.
I need to give the thumbs up to this game. It is a great unifying story unfoldng over multiple eras and family trees set in a non-linear fashion with great depth. At first, I was super baffled how it presents itself until I started diving deep into the stories of the people I was seeing on my screen. I even restarted the game a few times to optimize my start because I thought I was encountering bugs or doing something wrong but it is really this game's way - you explore everything simultaneously over all the eras of this US town. The only negative I see in this game is the requirement to know history. Even as Bulgarian, I know enough of the US history to understand why the events transpire the way they do - and they made total sense to me. After 25% I hope they add even more ages and eras to this game. I am only 25% in but it is great in providing the best thing any detective story does - give you a standpoint, then start building it around, throw some curve balls, give you a deep dive in some characters, then show you even more without clear direction how the story will unfold... After 100%: The game spans over the course of around 11 000 years, but in a nice, non+linear fashion - so you don't start from neolithic and finish in modern, but go from era to era to follow how the stories of the characters unfold and how to they matter in the great scheme of things. This is where the storytelling really shines - you will immediately catch on to events that transpired in another era and how they affected this one, and why. I am very, very impressed by this game. If the early access is anything to go by, this will be a great narrative game with stories that span decades worth exploring and finding out how they ended. Was the character an alturist? Did they become a psychopath? Or a powermonger? Or just gave up? With this game anything is possible, and I am here for it - and a ton of bonus points to the devs for the ability to speed up the game, and not make you wait for hours for the next story bit. THANK YOU!
