I just got to this game, after going through Hades 1&2. Part of me wants to call this 'Hades' lesser cousin', but it's actually the grandpa. It comes from the era, when people were making games rather than gaming services. It won't overwhelm you with hundreds of hours to beat (took me ~7hrs), but completionists may stay for more. Combat feels a bit clunky and slow at first, compared to the more recent action games, but it's not bad, and it gets even better with new weapons and upgrades. The story is written well, and Darren Korb does not disappoint with his unique OST magic.
So cool to go back and see what the indie scene was cooking when "the indie scene" was first becoming a big player. Bastion is an absolutely gorgeous game, from an art, music, and voice acting perspective. The painterly quality really made the isometric view feel very special and storybook-like. The story being told from the perspective of a narrator is also incredibly neat, and having him respond to various small choice made throughout added to the engagement. While the combat isn't nearly as tight as Hades, it still has excellent bones. It's evident that Supergiant used a lot of the foundation from this game in their later works. I think they deserve kudos for getting it so right so fast: the multiple weapons to accommodate various play-styles, the additional challenge applications, and cyclical nature of the story/ stages meshed so well together that it does not surprise me that Bastion made as many waves as it did. I am glad I took the time out to play this through, and I am excited to see Supergiant's other pre-Hades games.
tl;dr (spoiler free) i was broke in 2011 — found this game through TotalBiscuit's first impressions and pirated it before the video was over. in 2025 i am less broke — this becomes the first game in my Steam library that i 100%ed. i loved it then and i love it even more now due to better understanding game systems and narratives. it offers stellar world building, stunning visuals, tight action, varied combat, superb audio and perfect pacing. the bottom line — it's great, man. supergiant's first is a forever masterpiece. play it! blabbering (spoiler unfree) a truly unique way of storytelling, delivered via narration from the great Logan Cunningham and birthed by Greg Kasavin. an immaculate soundtrack to accompany you everywhere you flop, thanks to the now critically acclaimed Darren Korb (+ Ashley Barrett for THE song). one of my favorite game worlds, beautifully broken by the beautifully put together Jen Zee. silky smooth gameplay and optimization done by Gavin Simon and Andrew Wang. the thing ran great even back in 2011 — you'll have no issues with it today. and finally, and perhaps most importantly, thanks to Amir Rao for having the vision and a shout-out to his dad for lending them his house to use as an office. that's just awesome. - enjoyed getting all the steam achievements for this one. it involves you maxing out the difficulty of the game via the shrine system and you're in for a not so good time until: [*]you get used to it [*]find the weapon combo that suits you [*]upgrade said weapon combo [*]level up a few times to unlock all (or most) of your spirit slots via the distillery - the only achievement that felt like a chore is the rarest one — 'Hard Bargain.' it’s rare not because it is the most difficult per se, but it does require you to start a brand new game in the 'Score Attack' mode and grind your way up (see points 1–4). the actual challenge of getting the achievement once you're set up was fun. i failed about 10ish times before nailing it. felt good. gg (i completed it with the spear + musket combo both fully upgraded. char lvl 6) as an aside — dear valve, can we get some shiny border in the library for games we've unlocked all achievements for? pretty pls. - i like the sound your character in bastion makes when you fall off the trail and flop back down. like a pancake made of mud. - the scene where you find Zia by following her voice might be one of my top moments in games and worthy of a 'case of the full body shivers' out of 10. as you approach, her song becomes clearer. the narrator does his thing. the little glances she throws you. the blur of colors once you near her… man.
