Below the Stone, developed by Strollart and published by Apogee Entertainment, delivers a rewarding blend of roguelike exploration, mining, crafting, and extraction-based survival wrapped in a charming dwarven fantasy setting. Rather than relying solely on fast-paced combat, the game encourages thoughtful exploration, calculated risk-taking, and resource management. Every expedition into the sprawling underground feels like a meaningful adventure where every tunnel could reveal rare riches, hidden dangers, or entirely new discoveries. The combination of procedural generation and persistent progression creates an experience that remains engaging over extended play sessions. The heart of the game revolves around descending into an expansive subterranean world filled with valuable ores, mysterious relics, dangerous wildlife, and unpredictable environmental hazards. Since each expedition generates a fresh layout, players must constantly adapt their approach instead of memorizing routes. Exploration is highly rewarding because the world is designed to encourage curiosity, with hidden passages, secret chambers, and increasingly dangerous regions tempting players to push beyond their limits. At the same time, the extraction-focused gameplay adds constant tension, as surviving long enough to return home with valuable resources becomes just as important as discovering them. Mining serves as both a practical tool and a central gameplay mechanic. Players are given the freedom to shape their own path through solid rock, uncovering resources required for future upgrades while revealing new areas that may contain treasure or deadly surprises. This freedom makes exploration feel organic rather than scripted. The deeper players venture, the more diverse the environments become, with numerous biomes introducing new visual themes, enemies, resources, and gameplay challenges. This gradual escalation keeps progression satisfying while maintaining a strong sense of mystery throughout the journey. Combat complements the exploration by demanding patience and preparation instead of reckless aggression. Hostile creatures become increasingly dangerous as players descend further underground, requiring careful movement, effective equipment choices, and an understanding of enemy behavior. Death carries meaningful consequences due to the roguelike structure, making every encounter feel important. While losing progress during a failed expedition can be frustrating, it also reinforces the game's focus on strategic decision-making and gives successful runs a genuine feeling of accomplishment. Outside of combat, the progression system provides a steady sense of long-term growth. Resources gathered during successful expeditions can be invested into crafting stronger weapons, improved armor, and better tools that allow access to increasingly hazardous regions. Instead of making earlier content obsolete, these upgrades expand the player's capabilities while preserving the game's challenging nature. This balance between permanent progression and run-based risk keeps the gameplay loop consistently rewarding without becoming repetitive. The presentation effectively supports the game's adventurous atmosphere. Its detailed pixel art captures the personality of classic fantasy adventures while incorporating modern visual polish through expressive animations, varied cave environments, and atmospheric lighting. Every biome possesses its own identity, helping exploration remain visually fresh throughout extended play sessions. The sound design further enhances immersion with ambient effects and music that emphasize both the wonder and danger of exploring forgotten underground civilizations. Another notable strength is the developers' commitment to community involvement throughout Early Access. Ongoing updates, balance adjustments, and planned content expansions demonstrate an active effort to refine the experience based on player feedback. This collaborative development approach gives confidence that the game will continue growing while maintaining the core mechanics that already make it enjoyable. The existing foundation is solid enough to provide dozens of hours of exploration while leaving room for meaningful future additions. That said, Below the Stone will not appeal equally to every player. Its deliberate pacing, demanding survival mechanics, and significant penalties for failure require patience and persistence. Those expecting a casual mining simulator or an action-heavy dungeon crawler may find the slower progression and punishing setbacks discouraging. However, players who appreciate methodical exploration, meaningful progression, and the thrill of overcoming difficult odds will likely find these mechanics to be among the game's greatest strengths rather than weaknesses. Overall, Below the Stone succeeds in combining exploration, mining, crafting, roguelike progression, and extraction gameplay into a cohesive and highly replayable adventure. The procedurally generated world consistently encourages discovery, while the challenging gameplay loop rewards careful planning and intelligent resource management. Supported by attractive pixel art, immersive audio, and an active development team, it offers a compelling experience for fans of survival-focused roguelikes and mining adventures alike. Although still evolving through Early Access, it already demonstrates a strong identity and considerable potential to become one of the standout titles in its genre. Rating: 8/10
Good game, but not finished, progression is wonky, like the first mission to repair the bar takes so much glowweed that by the time you are done you have everything to complete the next 2-3 bar missions. All the bar missions give gold which is weird because some of them give out less than what it cost to craft the needed item. It needs chase items. I loved unlocking vendors but was only proposed 2. There needs to be a ultimate goal to this game, it is fun but why am I doing all this? The princess is not even in another castle.
