Blippo+ tells the story of the planet Blip, which in a lot of ways is remarkably similar to ours, but also extremely different in terms of technology, culture, cuisine, and so forth. Early in the story the Blippians realize that there's a nearby wormhole in space and their broadcast signals are actually being sent through and received by a new sister planet, ours. The game framework is set up like an 80s/early 90s public access TV broadcast, prior to there being hundreds of channels or on-demand programming. There's an overall program guide that shows the TV episodes on each of roughly 10-11 channels in a loop. Each episode of a show runs for about a minute and there'll be 4-5 shows scheduled on each network prior to looping back through. As the viewer you get to flip around the different channels in real time watching these episodes; once you've seen enough of that set of TV, you get a new data packet that contains the next set of episodes. In total each packet runs about 40 minutes, so it's very easy to sit down, watch the new set of Blippo+ shows, and put it down. It's a game in the same loose sense as a kinetic visual novel where you're just watching/reading the story in front of you with extremely minimal actual gameplay interaction. The variety of content is pretty broad and touches on a lot of different genres or styles of programming. There's what you'd consider relatively normal - a news show, a morning program, celebrity gossip, a claymation-style animated kids show, a soap opera about clones with only one actress, spooky horror stories, cooking shows, etc. There's also some wilder swings, like "Video Cola" which is a feed of different drinks being 'poured' onto your screen, the Psychic Weather report, Bushwalker (a point-of-view hiking program), a Max Headroom type digital avatar in a relatively ongoing state of existential crisis, an long-form poetry jam with user-contributed words, and so forth. There's even a deliberately scrambled adult channel (Zest) where if you squint a bit you can vaguely make things out like the hand model of Tantric Computing suggestively touching and rubbing older computing hardware and peripherals. In all these cases, it feels like there were a bunch of silly elevator pitches for TV show concepts and they just picked a variety of them and fully committed to the bit, while layering in the overall story about the Bend in Space and the cultural and social ramifications of a planet finding out that there actually is intelligent life out there and what they're learning about their world and culture is entirely broadcast (and skewed!) through their TV feeds. It's hard not to find a few favorite shows on Blippo+ whether that's the genre, the characters and performances, or just because it's weird and unique. I think what I liked most about Blippo+ is that it really, really nails that time-and-place cultural feeling of a particular media environment. I compare it to Hypnospace Outlaw, which similarly did an amazing job of setting the tone and feeling of late 90s web browsing and the communities and social trends brought about in that space. In this case, it's that reversion to a very 80s-early 90s coded TV environment where you only really knew what was on by looking at a program guide or just flipping channels to see what's on (probably already in progress). It's very much one of those titles that I would not recommend to everyone due to it being relatively passive as an experience, and relying on that awkward low-budget TV framework, but if it's a concept that interests you then you'll get exactly what you're looking for.

I like this. However I think you need to be over a certain age or this is going to totally miss you. If you get the idea of channel surfing then you understand the game play here. If you run out of stuff to do don't forget to look at your messages. There isn't a game play loop. There is nothing to collect. It's a weird world to immerse yourself in but you have no control over anything that happens. There aren't choices. If you are on the fence about this I highly recommend it at full price and it would be a steal on sale. EDIT: You might want some fresh bong water for this one. You'll see what I mean. Second EDIT: This would probably be a great game in a group setting. Especially if you know anyone who thinks video games don't offer something for everyone.` I don't think I can even offer any "spoilers" for this game because it's too weird. 3rd EDIT: At 5.3 hours I think I have seen everything in this game/art piece. I had a great time. It was worth it to sit with my cats and channel surf for a couple of nights. Last time I am gonna edit this. I had a blast with this and I would recommend it to anyone but I keep thinking about it and think it's REALLY important to note that this barely qualifies as a game. It's an activity. A sight to behold. I paid 17.99 canadian for this and I am happy but I am the kind of person who taped shows when I was younger and made compilation tapes and watched the scrambled pay channels. This game speaks to ME. Were you the only member of your family who bothered to learn to program the VCR? This is for you. Did you ever watch "You Can't Do That On Television?" This is for you. Have you watched TV so late that the flag goes up and the anthem plays and your choices are Jerry Springer, british soap operas you barely follow but you kinda like or informercials. This is for you. If you are a media sponge like me. This is for you.

This is kind of a "thumbs up but..." review. The game is a lot less interactive than I thought it would be. I thought you would have to enter codes to solve puzzles or something but instead it literally is basically a cable simulator from another planet. A very cool concept, and I do think it is worth buying. Just know it doesn't have a lot of active gaming going on. Still a cool idea, and I support people making weird stuff like this.

They keep saying to me: "Have you seen the new show? It's on Tubu. It's literally on Heebee. It's on Poodee with ads. It's literally on Dippy. You can probably find it on Weeno. Dude it's on Gumpy. It's a Pheebo original. It's on Poob." NO!! It's on Blippo+

THIS is the sci-fi FMV I feel like I've waited my whole life to see. While each of Blippo+'s programs are absurdly charming on their own, they all contribute to an overarching story that gradually reveals itself over the course of 10 "weeks." Each episode is only 1-minute long, so it's easy to watch a little Blippian TV here and there, or binge a whole week all in one sitting. Although it's not quite a game in the traditional sense, there is a level of interactivity that sets it apart from a simple film. Independent television doesn't get much better than this. I don't want to spoil too much of the programming, because this is a piece of media that's best experienced as blind as possible. I will say, though, if you crave the authentic channel-flipping experience from the 80s through the 90s, this is IT. The care and research that went into producing this thing are abundantly clear, and for only $15, it's definitely worth your time. Let's all get bent together. :)
