9/10 vr game. While yes, boneworks has a better campaign overall vr experience + sandbox possibilities are MUCH better in bonelabs. Guns feel more realistic and it runs overall more smoothly. (Also you can download the full boneworks campaign through mod.io and play it in bonelabs, it even runs smoother in some places, the mod is called labworks)

Bonelab is a wildly ambitious VR title that pushes the boundaries of physics-based interaction in virtual reality. Developed by Stress Level Zero, it acts as a spiritual successor to Boneworks, expanding on its ideas with a mix of experimental levels, sandbox gameplay, and modding potential. Rather than focusing on a traditional narrative experience, Bonelab is more of a platform—a physics playground that encourages players to discover and shape the world around them. The campaign, while present, feels more like a guided introduction to the game’s systems than a self-contained story. Each level presents a different theme, showcasing climbing mechanics, driving, puzzle-solving, and combat across various stylized environments. There's a surreal, almost dreamlike flow to the progression. The body-swapping mechanic, which lets you change your avatar's physical traits on the fly, adds a unique twist that’s tightly integrated into gameplay. However, the campaign can feel fragmented or unfocused, as its primary purpose is clearly to prepare players for the open-ended experiences that follow. Where Bonelab truly shines is in its sandbox and community-driven content. The game offers a powerful physics engine that supports a massive range of interactions, from wielding medieval weapons to flinging enemies across rooms with makeshift contraptions. It thrives on emergent gameplay—moments that aren’t scripted but born from the systems interacting with each other in unpredictable ways. The inclusion of mod support from day one means the game evolves constantly, with the player community contributing everything from new levels and characters to completely custom game modes. The VR implementation is solid but not without its challenges. Movement is fully physics-based, which makes for immersive, grounded gameplay but can also lead to awkward climbing or locomotion quirks. There’s a steep comfort curve; newcomers to VR may find some of the motion nausea-inducing, especially during high-speed sections or more chaotic environments. Still, for experienced VR users, the tradeoff is worth it—few games offer this level of tactile control and player expression. Combat and traversal feel more refined than in Boneworks, but they’re still rough around the edges in places. Melee fights have a satisfying physicality, and gunplay is responsive and detailed, but some mechanics—like enemy AI and environmental interactions—can feel inconsistent. Fortunately, the game’s modular design and constant stream of user-generated content help smooth over these issues, providing fresh challenges and tools long after the campaign ends. Bonelab is a game that knows exactly what it wants to be: an experimental, mod-friendly physics simulation wrapped in a VR framework. It’s not trying to compete with tightly scripted action games or deep RPGs. Instead, it hands the keys over to the player, saying, “Here’s a box of tools. Go break stuff.” While not for everyone—particularly those who crave structure or are sensitive to VR motion—it’s an outstanding example of what sandbox VR can look like when it fully commits to player agency. For fans of Boneworks, modders, and VR tinkerers, Bonelab is a chaotic, fascinating, and ever-evolving experience. Rating: 8/10

Thank you Issac Newton for the invention of physics. If we didn't have that apple this game wouldn't be real. So, in fact, thank you apple that fell.

Despite BONELAB being a VR game, it has quite frankly changed my life; modding is my main hobby and has led me down a path of a gamedev career that I would have NEVER thought about before. The game itself is great, it sets out to do what it intends; a VR title centered around modding and a campaign to demonstrate the capabilities of the 1Marrow interaction engine. Each "patch" contains improvements to Marrow, and incremental improvements to the campaign. Don't think of BONELAB as a campaign with modding support tacked on; this is a VR modding platform, driven by 1Marrow, demonstrated in the campaign. The raw value a user gets out of this game should not be determined by the campaign, which many perceive as too short. Rather, it should be determined by the value from mods, and the campaign as a side value. The MarrowSDK is still relatively basic, at the writing of this review we still only have official support for levels and avatars. However, the advent of the community contributed to and created by, Extended SDK, allows for spawnables and complex mods in general to be made. People say that the MarrowSDK is "holding back the mods", however most modders utilize the Extended SDK, making this "limit" people say is hindering the game, not be an issue. As a modder myself, I am FULLY satisfied the the game as a whole, the SDK and Extended SDK capabilities, and community. I have NEVER had to limit my scope of a project because of a limitation; I've been able to accomplish what I set out to make, could be a map, gun, avatar with abilities, etc. The strongest aspect of BONELAB mod creation and development is the community; a strong, resourceful, and inviting community willing to embrace and help create. Starting in late 2022, I've amassed over 1.2 million downloads across all my mods. If that doesn't show the success and value people hold of this title, then I don't know what does. If you think this game is "dead" and people don't care about it anymore; you are greatly mistaken; just take a look at the download count of some of the most downloaded mods. Purchase this game if you value the hard work of modders, the fun of mods and a campaign, and the hard work Stress Level Zero and their dedicated team have put into Marrow. To date, it is the has the most sophisticated VR player rig in any VR title so far; and with indirect progress being made towards future titles via Marrow being the backend of them, it will only, and always get better from here.
