You don’t understand anything the characters are saying, as they are using a made-up language, but the story is designed so that you don’t have to, but still sometimes it would be nice to have some explanation. As a single-player game it features extremely simple interaction, but controlling two characters at once is nice. However, if you want to have a nice co-op game to play with friends - don’t. Even though it is advertised as a co-op, even when you just start the game it tells you that it contains the possibility of 2 player cooperative mode, but it was not designed for that and it is intended to be played in single-player mode… And the camera controls and behavior are extremely strange. In general, a single player experience is 8-9/10, but coop is 1/10.
I'd prefer a mixed option or "middling" recommendation for a variety of reasons. I do love the original and that does cloud my judgement some. It runs well enough (though I experienced more visual bugs) and it does legally "look better". I just think the more cartoony visuals of the original felt better for the folk tale feel of it all. I will grant some designs ARE just better. The MAIN ending creature looks fantastic in the remake where the original it was very underwhelming and many areas give the sense of scale just as well or better than the original. But... it just felt like a pointless remake and outside of the major highlight of the ending monster and those scenes its... just fine... its fine.
Personally, I had a fantastic time, I even wish the game was longer despite my brain melting trying to multitask two hands at the same time, lol. The game was very pretty even on low settings, tiny bit of stutter during a couple of cut scenes, but otherwise no other issues. Even with the simlish gibberish you could still get the point of the characters' chatter. I originally decided to get this game because it reminded me of A Plague Tale serie and I love the first two games, they will always have a special place in my heart exactly because of the siblings' bond in them. I have to say, I was not disappointed with this game based on that and just like APT, it managed to break my heart . Don't we love that! The puzzles were fun as well, not too simple and not too hard to rock your brain for hours to the point it gets frustrating. I had a great time and can only recommend if you are looking for something that may get you in your feels (if you are an emotional person like yours truly), is not too time consuming nor hard and can be played alone or with someone else. (If it helps anyone, I've played the game in 1 sitting. I've read sometimes there is an issue trying to load your save file and a replay is needed, so I'm not sure about this. I've also played alone and on MnK - I've spent lots of time trying to figure out how to remap my keyboard as my laptop does not have RCtrl and I wasn't able to remap keys through the game and you cannot control the younger brother without RCtrl. Thus my hours long hunt on "how to" began and in the end Micr. PowerToys is what worked for me and was easy to use, so perhaps someone will find this helpful. I was at the point where I considered abandoning the mission and refunding the game because gosh darn, lol. Glad I managed to dig up a solution and enjoy the game.)
If Steam had a "neutral" or "informative" option for reviews i would have definitely selected that for this game. While it's great (and rare) to see a remake fully respect the original title without reinventing the wheel, unnecessary redesigns, changes to iconic scenes and characters, and reinterpreted or twisted themes, i also think the art direction is a downgrade compared to the original. The remake is obviously much more advanced on a technical level, but it fails to capture the aesthetic of the original art direction. This is its only flaw, but it's a big one. Still, as the only choices are a positive or a negative rating with no options in between, it's a "Recommended" from me because Brothers is a game that deserves to be experienced at least once. Play the original if you can for the best experience, however.
