Play this one before the sequel if you're interested in these games. It's fun, but the sequel is much more interactive (you barely even need to watch what your opponent is even doing in this game), so you won't likely be as inclined to come back to this game or enjoy it as much if you play the sequel first. I'm NOT good at card games, and I was still able to beat the game with like three losses. I think the game becomes most interesting once you get to the final boss and postgame where you face people with unfair decks. I feel like the system makes decks that focus on stalling, defensive play, and forcing losses through card deletion are most rewarded, but games are so fast that it doesn't feel inherently boring by any means. I think if you were to play this game against a human, the meta would be much different than the game is sort of implying it would be. By that, I mean player health is a distraction from the real win conditions in this game: play space, and cards remaining. You could say that going for either goal is "defensive play" in their own way, but attacking directly is so pitiful, that talking about it feels a bit silly. In my opinion, "Offense" just means "Obstruct", and "Defense" means "outlast". I speculate that against a real person, most matches would likely just be card deletion or board obstruction. There's not much counterplay to treating their deck as a health bar itself rather than their actual health/defense number, so I think the hypothetical evolved meta would be centralized around decks that play into that. I actually still find this pretty fun and interesting even after considering all of this.
A chill single player card game that I remember fondly and start up from time to time to play through again or to listen to the soundtrack. The card game mechanics are complex enough they're enjoyable without being difficult to learn. The encounters aren't super difficult, so it isn't too hard to come up with a deck that feels strong and is fun to pilot.
I just 100% the steam achievements on this game I would say that I enjoyed playing it! I really appreciate the game genre. There isn't a lot of deckbuilder-cardcollectiong-storymode games and I wish there were more! So that is a big plus. The experience of playing it was a bit up and down. I liked it to a start but after a while the Bo5 matches got a bit repetetiv and draged out on the time and it was a bit hard to make a deck that could put out enough damage to acctually dafeat someone in the beginning. But when you got a bit further into the game it got much better! This could be because I went with a defense deck in the beginning with the objective to stall the opponent but that was just becuase I didn't feel like there was any vaible attack cards but maybe after my fourth leagendery I switched to a heavy burst attack deck and that made it very fun!
