March 2026
I'm someone who has never played Vanguard before, but has played multiple other TCGs throughout my entire life. I am not coming at this from the angle of a fan of this particular card game or someone wanting to stay competitive with a digital simulation of the game, I am looking at this as a standalone $6 USD (as of the current 90% sale) single-player experience with optional-but-likely-dead online support in 2026, entirely unmotivated to buy expensive DLC. In that context, I think this game is phenomenal, an absolute must-buy for anybody with fond memories of older card game single-player RPGs like the Game Boy Color Pokemon TCG, or any of the YGO games from the PSX/PS2/GBA era. You begin with a starter deck and gain currency through gameplay, which lets you buy packs from one of 7 basic sets, as well as another 7 premium sets that mostly serve to provide bonus/promo cards to help with an archetype found within the basic sets. Boosters are decently affordable, you net around 4 packs worth of currency per match early on and as opponents get harder (and matches take longer) your rewards will balloon up closer to 7 or 8 packs worth, paying out even on a loss. You're always getting new cards, always making progress with your deck, and the AI decks ramped up roughly around the same rate my deck was so there was always a fair amount of challenge for me. AI decks offer a surprising amount of variety, too. Each of the six faction has at least three major archetypes within, and the AI will throw them at you over the course of the campaign without you having to fight the same leaders over and over. Story is... Eh, not particularly good, it feels exactly like I'd imagine a season of the anime for a kids card game would be. Lots of matches, the occasional scripted loss (sometimes you don't even get to play them), feeling down and out about said loss, power of friendship prevails yadda yadda. Serviceable, but if you just mashed Skip Dialog to get to the card games I wouldn't blame you. Like I said at the start, for six bucks I think what is here is great. It's not making me crave actual PVP matches, I'm not looking to pick up the game as a new permanent hobby, but this is something I can see myself coming back to and doing another run of the campaign for fun, try out different decks.

It's an iffy recommendation. If you and some friends buy it on sale, sure. If only you buy it, depends how much you like vanguard. $7 to build some decks without spending more money, and then playing those against friends? very fun. Having to spend money to access later card sets? Less fun. Also Dear Days 2 exists so if you want more up to date cards you'd want to spend money there. Buy it on sale, and there's a vanguard story to playthrough. Buy it on sale with friends and you can have balanced fun.

At this discounted price (92% discount), this game is really worth it! I've played this game for hundreds of hours on Nintendo Switch. You can still enjoy the game even without buying a single DLC pack. And I'm against buying DLC packs here, as it's better to buy the next game (Dear Days 2). It has all the packs and DLCs from this game with a far cheaper price (compared to the price of buying all the DLCs of this game). The story mode gives you a good difficulty progression. The tutorial fight might be not enough to grasp the general game flow for some of new players. There are plenty of tutorials in the internet that you can check (including here in Steam). If you want a reference for decklists, check the official Cardfight Vanguard website and navigate to their Deck Recipe section. However, please note that the base game of Dear Days 2 only cover the card expansion from the beginning of D-series to around June 2022. So decks posted after that date will have card(s) that either require you to buy DLC pack(s) or straight-up unobtainable in-game. For DLC packs, please note that there are basically two types of DLCs: Additional Card Set and Rare Card Set. I recommend you to not buy the Rare Card Set, as **it doesn't unlock the Card Set**. The one that unlock the Card Set is the Additional Card Set DLC. And even when you do buy the Rare Card Set, it only provides you high rarity cards that you can craft yourselves in-game without spending any money. As for the performance, it can run good on my 2024 laptop with only integrated graphic. This is even better than what I got on Nintendo Switch. For all players that have a 16:10 ratio screen and don't want the game to be stretched while in fullscreen mode, set the in-game setting to windowed at any resolution that you like. After that, press Alt+Enter to change the game into fullscreen mode. (Edit for clarity and additional infos)

It took over 3 years for the price to finally drop under $10, and honestly, it felt like a dream come true. I am not paying for a card game at the damn level of Resident Evil Requiem’s price. I still can’t believe the price ACTUALLY dropped. As of writing this review, the game is on special promotion that runs until March 11, 2026.

After three and a half years, this game is *finally* in a position where I can recommend it! There are a lot of issues. Typos, controls feeling surprisingly stiff for a card game and the huge amount of expensive DLC... However, despite all of the issues that have plagued Cardfight Vanguard over the years, the one thing that's always persisted is that it's a very fun card game to play. Pair that with the frankly insane 92% discount, and I can finally recommend everyone try this game out. Take this advice from me Bushiroad, charge around $20 for the next Cardfight Vanguard game at launch and you'll not only sell far more copies, but you'll make your fans far more forgiving of any other problems with the game too.
