First of all, it needs to be pointed out that what Delve Interactive achieved with CHANGE: A Homeless Survival Experience was incredibly brave and absolutely honorable, and it deserves a great deal of respect. They made a conscious decision to create a game that, considering the reality of the games market and the fact that socially and politically charged, uncomfortable and sad topics like these are far from being easy sellers, still delivers an immensely important human value, one that is far too rarely appreciated in a truly appropriate way. So this goes out to Danny Hayes, thank you for your commitment and for making such a necessary statement with the game. I’m often ashamed to be part of the human race but people like you make it a little easier to endure. Also very worthy of respect is how openly and in such detail the background and development story of the game has been shared publicly. That said, this is where I need to talk about the ups and downs of the game itself. As someone with a wide range of interests who, besides music and art, is deeply engaged with societal topics, I simply can’t help but play games like this from time to time, and it would be very desirable if many others would also open up to something like this instead of always looking for shallow entertainment. Beneath the hood of this pixel-art roguelike survival game, lies a machine full of challenges that demand real strategic thinking from the player. Almost every step is shaped by constant uncertainty, with random events that can spiral into seriously harsh consequences. It’s not just the atmosphere that feels on point, even the core mechanics are part of the storytelling, and the overall presentation comes across as authentic and fairly close to reality. Sadly a streak of bad random events can hit you pretty often, forcing you to restart runs and repeat the same tasks over and over again. On top of that, there are quite a few pesky bugs, like items disappearing, events not triggering or breaking halfway through and occasional UI issues. There are also a few things in the game I personally would have liked to see handled differently, or that I can only tolerate to a certain extent. A shelter that offers nothing but a shower instead of a meal, for example, really shouldn’t exist in a game like this. The fact that food at a shelter sometimes only gives you five points is just nonsense. And I’m not even going to get started on the guitar mini-game, that could have been genuinely cool if done right. Nevertheless, the game is still worth recommending, especially since part of the revenue is donated to charitable organizations. Gem of a game. Genuinely strikes the balance of challenging, playable, and enjoyable. Early game is hardest, when you're still strategizing where to be and finding your grind. There was more depth than I was expecting. Good for curing phobias and, not to put too fine a point on it, sympathizing.

I came into this game expecting that it was a company with 100 games trying to profit from an unoccupied niche in the rogue-like genre. After all, there are so many copycat games that rogue-like players are desperate for something new. I was wrong, and I am writing this for anyone who shares this sentiment. The metaphor is deadpan, the ambience is lonely, and the scenes are enlightening. Thank you, developers, I highly recommend your game's narrative! After losing multiple runs, succeeding to "win the game" and then trying another run after, I can say that this game has little to no replay value as it stands. This was surprising for a game within the "roguelike" genre, but here's my thinking: - you can play the game with the same tactics regardless of the items you come across. - With there being an obvious best tactic to acquire money, it reduces the players curiosity and desire to experiment. - The perk tree has "always best" options, and leave little variation for playstyle. - If I'm trying to do Money-gathering method A, I'll always pick perk 1, 2, 3, etc. HOWEVER, I'll reiterate that the game has an incredible "play" value that shouldn't be forgotten for anyone looking for a glimpse into the topic at hand. Play Disco Elysium next if you can stomach the dialogue. Disclaimer: I waited over a year to get this game on sale for roughly $4

The best game around about the lives of homeless people. Poverty, frusturation, despair, humiliation, mistreatment a homeless typically faces are artfully & near-realistically portrayed. Can't say perfectly complete in handling every detail and the complex dynamics at play of the issue but I can say this game very well conveys the feelings one will experience once they lose EVERYTHING. Through this expression the game aims to build and raise emphaty & awareness, a noble purpose indeed. Definitely recommend those somehow interested in the issue. As a side note: grasping the mechanics require multiple runs (sadly in real life, by the way, every person in that situation has only that run).
