The only thing holding Chorus back really is just the story and writing. Skip the cutscenes, zone out during the boring dialogue, ignore the cringey whispering, and you’ll find the gameplay is highly satisfying. Visually stunning, too, and it runs flawlessly out of the box on Steam Deck. For $3.74 (the deepest sale I’ve seen yet) you really can’t go wrong here.

Zone of the Elders The Chorus Unleashed Chorus is a solid arcadey flight sim with liberating sense of control, surreal space opera visuals, fairly interesting main cast, and a standard narrative throughline. The best part of this game is definitely the omni-directional movement system (and space magic) that addressed frustrations that players had when partaking in dogfighting sequence in flight sims, almost like a broken power fantasy fulfilment. It's great! The combat scenarios set up through the main story or the random encounters (actually tho, the low level enemy encounters are frequent, RPG-like) are pretty standard for the genre I guess, but it's still satisfying to blow them enemies up with the spacecraft's hi-tech weaponry, or use space magic to teleport behind them and zap them with EMP force powers. And there's two more fun space magic abilities that I'm not gonna spoil here because they're great! Yeah, you're playing as Nara, Starkiller's long lost sister. You'll be piloting around space stations, debris fields, giant bodies of rock and frozen waters, and unnatural non-human made structures, rallying everyone to defeat the space magic cult. Pretty straightforward really, structure-wise. You got your main story ready to railroad you to skill testing set pieces, and if you stray away you'll find optional side quests, many are unique but not all memorable. The human drama is okay. The conflict's dramatic, but they're not that interesting. The intrapersonal segments are decent. You're here to shoot down spaceships, man. I like Nara as a character tho, she's neat. One can say her personality is of a typical female protagonist archetype, but for a deprogrammed cult member character, I think she did well enough. The victory lap before the game ends tho, short as it was, was such a cathartic power trip, it could've been better but what we got is pretty good. You wanna fly around freely, shoot evil things in space stylishly, and getting woolongs from your salvage trade venture? This is the game. Good game on it's way to be great. SEE YOU SPACE MAGIC COWBOY...

The combat in this game is fantastic. The controls are tight and drifting and boosting around everywhere never gets old. Fast arcade dogfighting with a good mix of weapons and powers. It can be hard but you are so overpowered in most encounters that you usually end up stomping enemies once you learn their patterns. Boss fights go on a bit too long but are pretty fun as well. It gets into bullet hell territory sometimes, but you won't have to fight a boss more than twice to learn all their patterns. I wish the story was good. It had promise, and the relationship between A Girl and her Ship is kind of interesting, but it just drags on and on. Usually in these types of games stories are by PFPs in helmets talking at each other on comms. Nobody ever gets out of their ship. This is true for about 95% of the story for Chorus but there are also cutscenes! The cutscenes remind me that storytelling is very hard to do well. Honestly, I wish there was an arena mode or wave mode or something in this game so I could just blow up ships. I think I got this on sale for $5 and it was worth every penny. I probably won't play it again any time soon because I can't slog through that story again but if the devs make a sequel or an arena mode for this one then I'm down. I absolutely loved the combat in this game. It looks great and the controls are just perfect. Storytelling is hard.

i'm 5 hours in and i'm really liking this game. I'm wondering how I've never heard of it. I was at Best Buy with my son and he pointed at the display for the LG Ultragear monitors and said "Dad what game is that? that looks cool!" i googled the mission name that was being displayed and here I am, 5.5 hours into a really fun game.

Pretty cool short-and-sweet spaceship game about essentially a sith lord turning to the light and saving the world through having loads of grandiose dogfights made all the more epic and unique due to the inclusion of force powers! While I felt like the game was a little unfocused with some unnecessary open-world elements that drag the pacing down, I'd still consider it a big recommendation for people that are tired of the usual space dogfights and want some more spice added to them! PROS *Very dramatic and compelling story about redemption that's short and sweet, being able to get a complete experience in about 12-15 hours: fun to watch the main characters grow *Great combat design that's much more interesting than your typical endless circling and firing missiles you see in other space dogfighting games: a very diverse cast of enemies forces you to use everything in your toolset from your weapons to your force powers like drifting, teleporting, lightning, dodging and more to win *Incredibly epic scenarios and setpieces like crippling capital chips from the outside before flying into them to blow out their cores, trench runs, tunnel chases, as well as crazy boss battles against gigantic eldritch colossi CONS *Certain aspects of the story feel underdeveloped: some characters become your allies with very little resistance, some plot points that you think would come up later are dropped, culminates in your typical 'balance' and 'believe in yourself' philosophy 101 cliches *While the game has some incredible highs for its combat scenarios, these can be few and far-between the many easy-peasy scenarios that come up alongside just tedious flying around to get to the next objective: my patience grew thin at some points *Underdeveloped systems like ship customization, upgrades, side-quests and collectibles feel very token, like the game was originally going to be a big open-world but then they scrapped it half-way but still left it in: would much prefer a more straight-forward well-paced adventure than this game which lets a lot of superfluous fluff get in the way
