This game is not what you think it is. Whatever you have in your head, throw it out. There are plenty of other reviews trying to liken this game to others, and, don't get me wrong, it definitely shares traits with those games but... It's just so strange and different that it isn't really doing it justice or describing it well. Like, sure, you can say it's like Terraria (Calamity mod specifically) and World of Goo and Noita and Carrion and Spelunky but with tons of tower defense genre DNA and also there's Hollow Knight style walljumping oh and it has the Klei artstyle but with steampunk apocalypse themes and surprisingly good dialogue. And the protagonist is a robot anime maid, and the game's developer probably still listens to Steampunk Giraffe to this day. But... Even babbling all of that out doesn't really capture it? This is a rare, truly unique-feeling game. It's not like, completely original, don't go in expecting that, art is never truly original. But it's taken the DNA of so many other games and mashed it up together with the author's own very unique style and sense of art, while still somehow remaining coherent, that it's hard to say "if you like this, you'll like CleanFall." Someone else said that this game feels like someone took an early '00s flash game on CoolMath.com and turned it into its own complete thing with writing and story and more than just a one-trick gimmick, and that's accurate in the best way. It has that same... Auteur madness that stuff like Motherload or Linerider had. If you like trying new, weird, good food, you should try this game. If you're more of a "I just want more of what I already know I like," you probably won't like it. I really like it.

Tentatively recommend if you enjoy games like Noita. Very weird, reminds me of early 2000's flash games with a better budget.

Cleanfall is an excellent mix of World of Goo style building in a roguelike setting, but instead of building a structure, you're building a ship to defend yourself as you dig down. While the building can be a bit clunky at times, your ship will inevitably turn into a scrappy mess after frantically repairing it, so it doesn't quite matter. The biggest problem with designing your ship is that it can feel like you're stuck with something you aren't happy with, but the game forces you to abandon it right when that starts to happen. The turret alchemy system is excellent for getting a little (or a lot) more out of your crappy little ship you made in act 2, along with greatly rewarding you if you play around the system the whole time. Generally the gameplay reminds me of Noita in a way that I can't quite describe, but that's definitely a good thing. One small mistake can completely thrash you, whether that's staying too long or positioning your ship poorly, but you get better at knowing what's a terrible idea and what to plan for as you go. I think this game is awesome and I cannot wait to see more from this game and the dev. Cleanfall is definitely worth checking out if you like physics based games and roguelikes.

This game is like a sci-fi version of Noita where instead of building wands to fight enemies you're building a war machine out of turrets along with an arsenal of guns and drones. There's a lot of hidden depth here too that requires experimentation to uncover and enough player freedom to allow for really overpowered builds while also being unforgiving enough to always be a challenge. Plus it comes with an anime girl protagonist right out of the box so there's no need to mod one in like with Noita so that's nice. I've really been itching for another game with this kind of mystique and its made all the better by having such a unique gameplay loop. Every run so far has had unexpected discoveries and I'm looking forward to seeing how deep the rabbit hole goes. Definitely recommend it and I hope it gets enough support to receive plenty of content updates into the future.

I tested the game so I already have a lot of hours played. The game is a bit difficult and confusing in the beginning but it encourages exploration and slowly learning about all the creatures and gadgets and mechanics in the game. And as you learn more, the game eventually becomes easily beatable, and extremely gratifying to get your first win. You'll go from not knowing how to kill basic frogs in your first run to eventually building giant war ships that commits mass destruction.
