Probably the best of all the cossacks series in terms of graphics. Looks like painted battles at times. Good game for its time and nothing else out there. Blitzkreig is good but this has vastly more soldiers. Hopefully the programmers come up with other games one day.

For thoose wondering, the game works fine on a Linux PC with Proton 4.11.13 with very little RAM, so there's still ways to play the game today even if you do not have a PC that run Windows Vista. I do not think you can play the game with windows 11 though according to other reviews. As for my opinion of the game, this is an old classic that I really enjoyed as a kid and still enjoy now.

This is one of the best Napoleonic RTS games ever created. It incorporates both base building and combat on very scenic maps in isometric projection, Infantry are formed into companies and cavalry into squadrons and both may be used in formations to battle the enemy. The battles are fought on maps with roads and with villages that give resources. The villages are strategic targets to capture and hold to add their resource supply to your economy. One of the games best features is that it includes morale and energy levels, if the morale of your soldiers gets too low they run away. Eventually they will return to your barracks and you can re-use them. The uniforms of the soldiers are accurate representations of the actual uniforms and the method of combat with line, column and square formation is also accurate for the period. The economy aspect is minor, the emphasis of this game is the strategy and tactics.

Best Strategy game of this era. It has mechanics that are suited for the battles from this era. Morale based squads, formations and combat advantage of holding a position. These mechanics make it unique from other RTS games, the battles are more strategic and slow paced. Not just making more troops and more robust economy. Using roads and capturing villages make it also more realistic and unique. Leveling up the squad (increasing morale) is satisfying and the loss of an elite squad is painful. The generals (heroes) could have been more useful (abilities, passives) to create a special squad - more attachment to the squad/general and more engaging combat. Use F7 for distant view -> this camera feature alone makes it better than Cossacks 3. In no means is it a perfect game, it crashes frequently. The story and the voice acting is bad. I didn't care about the story at all. The most interesting was reading the bios of individual generals. The small action video box is cringe (turn it off). I hope GSC Game World revisits and gives a little love for this forgotten masterpiece. Cossacks 3 is a reboot of Cossacks 1. Hopefully Cossacks 4 will give a shot to the ideas implemented in Cossacks 2.

Underrated classic. Looks less like a game and more like a 19th century oil painting! Probably the prettiest RTS ever made.
