First off, if you were looking for a CLONK x Lemmings x The Settlers type game, well look no further! Craftlings will scratch that itch, and wonderfully so! Even though I am running Craftlings on a Linux desktop distro that was designed to run Steam, and have run through all 12 levels at least twice, after 82h I have yet to find a game breaking bug. Trust me (or not), that is VERY rare in any game I play. As an ancient dev myself from the times when we used clay tablets to program clay golems, I tend to try things that *definitely* were not part of the original architecture and design. 🧙♂️ Solid 10/10 from me on this one. Addendum at over 100h... I saw some people have trouble with "micro-management" - true, a couple of levels need a bit of work to get started, and you need to concentrate if you are attempting a speed-run to set a new higher score. If you are not trying for a speed run, then after the initial "stress" of maybe 10 min, the rest can be set up to be pretty much automated.
I played Lemmings as a kid on my Amiga and even though Craftlings is not a 1:1 successor to this nostalgic game, it's a creative and fun mix of Lemmings and The Settlers on a Terraria like map. In Lemmings, you have to make sure the Lemmings find a safe path from the spawn point at the left to the exit on the right. In Craftlings, however, you have a main quest (defeat an enemy, build something, gather specific resources), so you have to build a 2D settlement with production facilities and gather resources. Like in Lemmings, the Craftlings keep walking and never stand still - they walk in a loop from left to right until they hit a wall and run back left. It's your job to place everything in a way that your Craftlings walk and work in a automation loop efficiently. The great thing is you can take your time and even if you make a mistake and run out of money or your Craftlings die, the game makes sure that you never get stuck. Craftlings is a fun puzzle game and I hope that the developer adds more maps (currently, there are 3 biomes with each consisting of 4 maps, so 12 maps in total). What I liked: + cool and fun mix of different genres (production chains, automation loop, puzzle, combat) + detailed and pretty pixel art graphics + simple, but pleasant music + interesting main quests (although some maps are too easy) with optional side quests + decent content (12 maps, 3 biomes) with many production buildings and resources + combat with different weapons against normal enemies and bosses + the Craftlings are cute <3 and respawn if they die + no time limit
This is modern Lemmings with aspects of Kingdom (two crowns/new lands). I love it. Your little dudes mindlessly walk back and forth until they run into something they can do. You place buildings that they automatically activate. I love trying to find the fastest way to complete the level. Bravo! It's great.
Meh. It is not what I expected but that is on me for not doing research. This is more like a puzzle game just like its inspiration. So if you are looking for a good automation game or a good city builder then keep looking. I would describe this more like a puzzle game with city building and automation elements. You get various buildings that create various resources and then have to figure out a way to get those resources where you need them next. Tools are just another resource. Enemies are stationary and you bring the fight to them so don't expect base defense. You switch between needing a resource to selling it for gold, another resource. Thankfully gold doesn't need to be carried to buildings that need it. It does have its challenges but there are times it was putting me to sleep as I fast forwarded while I had to wait for resources to be delivered to complete and objective. I don't regret my purchase but had I known then what I know now I most likely wouldn't have made that purchase. It is not a bad game but it is also not a great game. As a spiritual successor to Lemmings though it hits the nail on the head. Unlike Lemmings you don't seem limited to a certain number of deaths. Perhaps that changes after the tutorial which is 4 out of the 12 levels long. That's how far I am at the time of this review.
