So first of all, I need to say this: do not let the "horror" tag make you believe this is going to be anything scary - it's not. Out of all the games I've played in my lifetime, Creature Kitchen most accurately embodies the idea that the unknown, unusual, or weird doesn't have to be scary or malicious. Your goal in this game is to cook meals, solve puzzles, and find your way around a mysterious home. While you start off feeding ordinary creatures such as raccoons and crows, monsters and cryptids start appearing with their own preferred foods. There is no danger present in this game, and at most the only thing you might find unsettling is the atmosphere itself. If you are a veteran of the horror genre, the low-poly graphics and dark atmosphere is reminiscent of some classics of the PS1 era. The challenge mainly comes from figuring out the puzzles. You will have to look for clues as well as the documentation on the recipes and creatures for hints on what to do. Oh, and the frying minigame as well - that was quite challenging. I have played this on both the steam deck and PC, and it ran well on both. Anyways, highly recommend this game. I can't stress enough how special it is.

In this game, it's always night and there's darkness everywhere, but there's comfort in it. Some creatures have made me jump, but they never feel scary. Cooking for these creatures feels like the kind of love you give as appreciation for them keeping you company, for staying with you, for liking you. It's a different kind of home, less chatty, but wholesome nevertheless. I finished this game a few days ago and I still think about it. I wish I could play it for the first time again.

One of those games where you beat it and go 'awww it's over?', it was short and sweet, creepy and cozy, the perfect lil gem to tuck into for one evening. I do wish there was more reason to make every recipe, and perhaps more family members, but that's just because I enjoyed it and want more. The atmosphere was nostalgic and supremely comfy.

Impeccable vibes. Spooky enough to be intriguing, but not so spooky that it becomes stressful. The puzzles aren't very hard, but that actually ends up working in the games favor, as increasing the difficulty would risk detracting from the game's relaxing atmosphere. It also lasts just long enough to end on a satisfying note without becoming too repetitive. My only real complaint is that the food items don't have their own unique models; they all just use the same paper bag with a different label. A big part of the satisfaction that comes from playing cooking games is seeing the end result of your efforts, so even a little photo on the front of the bag would be preferable to nothing. Regardless, it's a lovely game and I can't recommend it enough!

This is cozy with a little dash of comforting horror aesthetic to keep you on your toes (or chuckling and smirking, take your pick). What a genuinly unique and cleverly thought out gaming experience!! From the cute critters, to the flickering lights, creaking floorboards and never ending pantry , this game truly offers a bit of everything. Creature collecting, photography, light puzzles/easter eggs, cooking, exploration with your handy flashlight... all of this with very fitting atmospheric effects. The art and graphics are just perfect and add to the whole experience of "what the HELL is going on here?!" There are some games that if you write too much in the review, you kind of give away the fun of discovering the game. This is that kind of game. If you like the concepts I described above, just pick it up. For the price, you won't regret it. It is not scary at all despite the vibes. On the contrary, it is the perfect game to snuggle up with in bed on the deck. The controls are amazingly done and you are not required to use the trackpad for the cooking. Praise be!! This game is a hidden gem and going in blind is the only way to enjoy it in my humble opinion! Update: may have lied… I just jumped out of my skin XD (but it’s one of those scares that has you laughing afterwards)
