I have spent around 300 hours so far in CRUMB and enjoy it very much. I love being able to build and test circuits without having to worry about buying new components and bread boards. The graphics are top notch, and the electronics closely mimics real life (with some exceptions). The author is currently working on a new version with many improvements. He's says that current users will get the update free. I'm waiting with baited breath for the update.
There are numerous circuit simulators on the Internet, but none of them have the realistic 3D look of CRUMB. The real-time simulation of the circuit is exactly what you would see if you built your circuit on a real breadboard on your home work bench. The only thing the real thing has on CRUMB is that in the real world you have to handle and manipulate the components with your hands. CRUMB is a tool for learning, just as a real electronics lab breadboard. The program is not necessarily meant to be a tutorial, although the developer has included a number of sample circuits that get you started on the road to understanding how electronic components work. There are a lot of electronics learning publications out there, and CRUMB gives you the experience of working with 3 dimensional components to build the circuits in those publications - without the expense of buying all the components and paraphernalia for a home lab. If you have fumbled around with some of the 2D circuit builders and simulators on line, give CRUMB a try. I highly recommend it.
It's a great game. I think this could become a great game, just that development is slow because apparently there's only 1 developer. Currently there are only a few ICs and sadly no microcontrollers except the arduino. I wish the developer would add simple 8-bit microcontrollers and s-ram, since I'd love to be able to plan things in here that I want to build in real life, since the simulation is absolutely great! I just wanted to add that I don't understand the bad reviews. The UI is fine, the component placing is fine and the wiring is also fine, just a bit hard to create straight bends. Yeah, it could use some more content but it's a 1 man game.
