After finishing all campaigns, I can say that Crush Your Enemies is a genuinely fun game. However, whether it truly qualifies as an RTS is something I'll come back to later. Let's start with the presentation. The pixel-art style looks fantastic, the artwork is full of personality, and the campaign dialogue is filled with silly humor and unfiltered language that fits the game's chaotic atmosphere. The sound effects are satisfying too, from the fighting noises to corpses flying across the battlefield. The music is enjoyable, although there are only a handful of tracks, so it can become repetitive during longer play sessions. As for the gameplay, it is straightforward and easy to understand. Unfortunately, that simplicity also means there are not many different ways to approach missions. Throughout the campaigns, I was usually able to complete most challenges and collect nearly all available skulls. However, I did encounter a few frustrating bugs. In some missions, objectives would not register even after I had clearly captured every building. There were also challenges that felt unreasonable, such as requiring a hero to kill 150 enemies while simultaneously keeping specific units alive under a strict timer. Another issue I encountered was the pathfinding. Units would occasionally take inefficient routes, bunch up in awkward ways, or struggle to navigate around obstacles. In a game that often relies on quick reactions and timed objectives, these issues could be frustrating and sometimes felt unfair. It didn't ruin the experience, but it definitely hurt the overall gameplay at times. As the campaigns progress, new mechanics and units are introduced. You begin with simple villagers and later gain access to swordsmen, archers, shield bearers, shamans, wizards, and other specialized units. You can also spend beer, the game's reward currency, on various upgrades and consumables. These include strength elixirs, chicken decoys that distract enemies, tents that increase troop amount and recovery, land mines, portals, and more. While these additions are creative, I never felt the game was particularly well-balanced. Some missions were surprisingly easy, while others relied heavily on strict timers that demanded faster reactions than the AI rather than rewarding strategic planning. The maps are generally quite small, which further limits the amount of meaningful strategy available. Later campaigns introduce mechanics such as building placement and additional deployment points, which are welcome additions. However, they arrive very late in the game and do not fundamentally change how most missions are played. I completed every campaign in roughly fifteen hours over the course of two days. By the end, I felt that the game was more of a fast-paced tactical challenge than a traditional RTS experience. There is strategy involved, but not nearly as much freedom or variety in approach as I would expect from the genre. Another downside is the multiplayer. Ten years after release, the community is effectively inactive, which makes multiplayer achievements difficult or impossible to obtain. There is also no AI skirmish mode or comp stomp option to compensate for the lack of active players. I was also disappointed by the limited faction variety. The game only offers two factions, despite some of the artwork showing creatures such as orcs that never actually appear in gameplay. More playable factions would have added a lot of replayability and variety. Despite my criticisms, I still recommend Crush Your Enemies. For around €10, there is a solid amount of content, plenty of challenge, and a unique sense of humor. Better yet, pick it up during a sale if you can. Just be prepared: this game can be frustrating, it can make you rage, and some challenges may test your patience. Yet at the same time, it remains entertaining and rewarding to complete. I played through the game nearly ten years after its release, finished all campaigns, and collected most of the available skulls. While it has its flaws, I still enjoyed my time with it and believe it is worth experiencing... 7/10
