Excellent Game! Nuanced, funny, interesting gameplay and excellent soundtrack! Thinking about how many lines of dialogue are needed for the script to run... INCREDIBLE! Bravo Devs!

The game is marketed as a dungeon crawler, and it is that par excellence, but I think in terms of experience it feels closer to a really good stand-up comedy routine with audience involvement. The freeform text input means that you can entertain yourself for a very long time simply by throwing words at various characters, especially the Cryptmaster himself, who is an absolute delight and completely steals the show. Not only is it kind of baffling how many player actions and interactions the developers have clearly predicted, but the way the game responds is often significantly more involved than simply winking at you when it notices you pushing its limits. You can tell that everyone involved, from the writers to the voice actors, are having so much fun. I don't want to be any more specific than that because this is a game best experienced blind, but suffice to say I can't remember another game that made me burst out laughing as often as this delightful, absurd gem of an experience. EDIT: You're going to see that my playtime hasn't increased much since reviewing; this is because I decided to put the game down until I get a better keyboard since I think this *typing* game deserves a little more majesty than a cheap plastic HP thing.

The cryptmaster is a wonderful tale of 4 undead heroes fighting to reach the surface. That would be much easier if they had their memories... maybe with a little help they'll come back? Pros: - Very unique combat style. You fight using words that you figured out and unlocked within combat! E.G. want to HIT your enemy? Type HIT! You want to do a more complex move? Figure out what the word is and then you can use it! - Amazing soundtrack, I loved every second of it - Very good voice acting - Unique art style Cons: - Some of the puzzles are a little tough (likely a me issue) - though this issue is offset with help that is given in the options. Such as extra hints. And if worst comes to worst there's guides online. - The movement is a little clunky, it's part of the game design but I personally didn't like the "looking around" too much. It's tank controls. Despite the cons, I strongly advise anyone who enjoys a good puzzle game to give this one a shot. It's a thoroughly unique experience that is bound to have you laugh, scratching your head and singing with glee every time you solve another... cryptic... puzzle

My mom had a stroke about a year ago at this point and struggles a lot with work, memory, and energy. She likes video games to a degree especially puzzle-y ones. I bought this game on a whim and was trying it out when I got to the first riddle skull and my mom just happened to walk into my room and see me playing it and we both sat there for a minute trying to figure it out, and once we got it we we're both hooked. We had several nights where we stayed up very late playing this game. Even my dad joined in and he doesn't care much for video games. The game quite literally brought my family together and its a high I've been chasing since we beat this game. We are DESPERATELY hoping this game gets a sequel, because if it does I will buy it day one and have a great time with my mom once again. Cryptmaster isnt the best game I've ever played but it is one of if not the best experience I've had playing a game and I just want to thank the developers for that. It was great and I can only hope you guys make more.

A rather fun game that has some issues. It's a first person dungeon crawler with a four person party, but the dungeon crawling is not quite the point of the game. The game definitely has innovative elements. It's essentially a game about guessing words to unlock new skills and memories. At all times each member of your party has their next skill word to be guessed. Killing enemies, solving puzzles, opening chests, and such will award you letters and they populate the blank words hangman-style filling in letters. At any time you can guess the word, and if right you are rewarded and it moves to the next word. In combat you have to type out the name of your skill to execute it and it's a frantic rush of typing things as fast as you can while remembering what each skill word does. What really sells the game is the narrator, the cryptmaster, who responds to everything you say. He will mock you, assist you, be confused, and all sorts of reactions to the words you blurt out as you try various guesses. The dialogue is routinely hilarious and the story is a parody half the time. You can give one word queries to NPCs and they have a wide range of terms they will respond to as well. The problem is the game part of this game, namely the RPG elements. The combat system has some innovative quirks but has serious balancing issues. You end up with maybe 20 to 30 skills per character but they are not in any way created equal. About 20% of them you will use all the time, 40% of them you will never use ever, and the other 40% are extremely situational. Many skills are just inferior to others. Do you want to deal 2 damage, or do you want to deal 2 damage while dealing one to yourself? You would think the skills unlock in progressive power but that doesn't seem to be the case either. Character word progression is also locked by your progress through the game, which seems fine until the late game. The game is suddenly over and you're nowhere near to finishing out each character's word chart...and you don't even appear to need to. Also rewards are kinda off. You get a ton of letter rewards that are just wasted on your current word until you guess. Maybe things could have carried over to future words. Also the game does not track what letters a word cannot contain based on letter rewards you've already gotten, which is just as important as the letters you've filled in. The balance is just off. It's not like it ruins the game or anything, just that the combat part of the game is weak. Overall the game is enjoyable and you certainly haven't played something like it before.
