As someone who's played CT2 at least five times over the last near decade, I can safely say that this version is just as good, if not better than the webpage versions. One thing I really like about this version is how you no longer have to prevent enemies from touching your gems to get brilliants. You just have to keep all three now (it used to be five gems, but it was reduced to three for this version). That is a great change that makes the game a LOT easier. You have no idea how many times my runs got ruined by iron guards and smugglers because of them touching my gems. There's also four levels in each section now and you get bonus XP for doing night missions, both of which are also great changes. There are a couple issues however, and one of them is how inconsistent placing towers in night mode is. I remember being able to build towers in the webpage versions as long as half of the lot was covered by the light. In this version, I can't build towers even if 3/4ths of a lot is covered in light. In level 4 (the one with the general), I couldn't build on the high ground because 1/4th of it was dark, but in that same level I was able to build an archer tower on the grass island near the village (even tho 1/4th of that lot was also dark). I don't get why it's so inconsistent, but the increased XP for doing night missions helps me put up with it. Another thing I don't like is how mute the game is. idk if it's a me issue (I'm playing on a laptop) or a game issue, but the sound effects and music in this version are so quiet. I turned the sliders all the way up and even increased my laptop volume, but I could still barely hear it. I never had volume issues with the webpage versions, so idk why the ultimate version (which is supposed to be the best version) is suddenly having these issues. It's not enough to stop me from playing the game but I just find it weird regardless. Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. This is a great game, and I recommend you get it if you're into tower defense.
I absolutely loved the OG game and was happy to replay this one. Although many changes and fixes are appreciated, some aspects was changed for the worse, in my opinion. So it's a solid 4/5 for me. The good: - Technical and graphical bugs that I encountered with the og game are gone, yay - Not loosing a star because your gem was touched for a split second is a huge win for this edition. I can not tell enough how much situations like these pissed me off with the original game. Plus they basically made a gem return mechanic viable, which is a big undertaking in terms of game design. The divisive: - I didn't like the rebalancing that devs did with waves and exp gain. Part of the fun of the original game was that you could feel the power trip (you are playing as evil guys after all) when you got quick access to upgrades and rushed through levels, always anticipating for one that would be a wall for your current set of upgrades. After that you could grind a couple of levels for achievements and come back to win again and again. Here I had to grind beyond the amount that would feel fun or natural for a well balanced single player game. Even after I 100%ed the game, I'm still missing 4 levels, which I'm not willing to grind for since it's slow and very repetitive. - Introducing minions from previous biomes to a new ones is a mistake in my opinion. I get that devs wanted to have more diversity in terms of mechanics within the waves. In actuality it doesn't really make it more interesting, but damages the comprehension of the levels and biomes in general in terms of flavor. Vikings and pirates in underground mines? Sure, that seems natural...
