Imperfect but underrated I have a history with De Blob - I played De Blob 2 on PS3 as a kid, and realising it and its predecessor were on Steam I got them both and played through them. They make for a sadly forgotten and underrated duology in the 3D platformer genre. Focussing on De Blob 1, its main selling point is really the soundtrack, and the sense of progression you get as you restore lifeless greyscale cityscapes to bursting with life, colour and music. Looking back on what you achieved at the end of each level is really gratifying. The side characters are lovable and I love their gibberish voice acting, and the funny cutscenes between each level are a real treat to watch. As you paint, the soundtrack also adapts to your actions, becoming more complex and triumphant over time. Each colour you paint with also chimes in with its own instrument! Revisiting De Blob as an adult in the middle of the tumultuous times of the mid-2020s is also rewarding, as the punk themes of the people rising up against an oppressive corporate government went straight over my head as a kid and I really appreciate a children's video game being willing to tell that kind of story. I don't think you could do that in today's political climate - you'd get branded as 'too woke' or some bullsh*t. The gameplay itself is very simple though, and in the long term this holds it back; if you aren't interested in the story the gameplay might become very repetitive towards the end. New elements are rarely introduced. The platforming can feel heavy and sluggish, with Blob getting stuck on walls a lot. It was even worse on the original Wii version as someone had the bright idea of mapping 'jump' to 'shaking the Wii Remote' instead of a button! This limits how much actual platforming can take place. Wall jumping feels fun, though, as does smashing enemies. The time limit on levels is unnecessary as well as too generous to worry about if you're actively trying to beat the level. The game overall is extremely easy; this does not bother me as it is a kids' game and thus needs to be accessible. There is a notable difficulty jump for the last few levels and you might die a few times. I'd recommend De Blob for anyone looking for a simple, relaxing platformer with a great soundtrack. I also find it very nostalgic as something that was obviously made in the late 2000s with a strong Frutiger Metro aesthetic.
De Blob is basically what happens when stress relief and mild rage decide to co parent a video game. Most of the time it’s soothing, like colouring books for grown up and then suddenly one challenge has you seething like a kettle someone forgot to take off the boil. But with enough perseverance (and maybe a muttered swear or two), you get there. The game itself is easy to play, almost suspiciously easy until the last two levels, where it becomes a scavenger hunt designed by someone who enjoys watching players doubt every life choice. “Do I have everything? Should I go back? Is this the point of no return?” Yes. Always yes. This is my second time splatting colour around the place, originally on the Wii, and honestly? The colouring is still ridiculously satisfying. Call me childish, but painting a grey city into a rainbow scratches an itch deep in my soul. I’m not even a platformer person, yet here I am, returning like a loyal blob‑based boomerang. That must mean something. Now, the real villain of this game isn’t the INKT Corporation, it’s the manual colour dumping. At one point I needed 200 colour points for a single quest. Two. Hundred. Why am I doing manual labour for a blob? Where is my auto‑dump button? Who approved this? I’d say I enjoyed about 90% of the experience right up until the game made me replay levels like some sort of colourful Groundhog Day. Verdict: 7/10 Perfect for kids and completionist's.
A fantastic game with unique ideas, vibrant visuals, clean aesthetics and amazing music. It offers a surprising amount of content and it's pretty satisfying to 100% despise missing some QoL features like trackers for missed collectibles. Levels can be quite lenghty when going for full completion though. Aside from that, the game feels pretty solid though the controls suffer a bit when the game requires any sort of precision with lock-ons, specially in the challenge missions. Still a fantastic game to play, heavily recommend.
