Enjoyed the game in early access and relearning it after release. Lots of fun little details through the game. There is a learning curve in the game, and at one point I thought my self invincible lol, and then got wiped out in a new location. But fun game overall

The core of this game is very satisfying. Lead mercenaries, fight zombies, collect loot, and unlock locations in a bid to escape Pine Valley. There is loads of fun to be had for the right person. A solid foundation and game loop. However it is very rough around the edges and it shows the further you get in the game. After a getting midway through the campaign your greatest source of upgrades will be the weapons labs, which adds to the level cap of weapons you find. The weapons cap progress is slow and seemingly random, so you will find yourself endless repeating similar missions to gain lab points in order to find higher level weapons. This is somewhat alleviated by the shared weapons lab and new loot bonus to later missions, but the grind remains the same. There should be more mix-ups or something to prevent the game from getting stale at this stage. Once you get to the late game, especially on higher difficulties, your flame weapons will outshine every other weapon. This is because weapons scale linearly and don't keep up with zombie health, while flamethrowers do a percent damage to zombies and burn them each and every turn. So if a zombie has 4000 hp and a high tier weapon does 150 damage your flamethrower will burn them for 5% of their hp 3x meaning 600 damage. The flame also repeats that damage each turn as the zombies start on fire. This is especially notable when later game bosses can have 60k hp. It starts to boil down to simply lighting the zombies on fire and just watching them burn, while your guns and swords do negligible damage to the massive hp pools. I have gripes, but I do really enjoy this game. It's a challenge on the hardest difficulty and building up the camp and sorting through loot is a blast. It just needs a lot of tweaking, polish, and balancing before it could become something truly great.

This game is one of my favourites. It doesn't fit neatly into any standard category - you get a deck of cards for combat but it's not really a deckbuilder. You get a bunch of mercs and allocate them skills but it's not an RPG. It's got a strategy and a tactical layer but it's not like xcom. Each element of the game is done well, and the whole is greater than the sum of those parts - it's really just very satisfying to play.
