Thought I'd sit down and play for 30 minutes, maybe an hour, then get back to my regular scheduled gaming session. Instead I spent 5 hours playing. Easy to get right into, without a lot of tedium. Highly recommend, especially for those that love to rack up achievements quickly!

I was not sure what exactly I was getting into when I purchased and installed Dead Grid but I am certainly glad I did. A card game with fun animations of zombie-splatting combat with tons of items to collect, upgrade and a whole crew of Mercs to recruit, some of them are even unalive. Levelling up your bunch of Mercs is fun and there are skill-trees to invest points in to improve your combat capabilities and passive skills. You usually have a mission somewhere on the map that roughly matches the power of your squad so you can pick and choose the fights you feel you can manage. Or throw yourself at a tough objective for the sheer hell of it if you wish. I did not expect to get around 40 hours of gameplay out of this title but here we are. My squad is maxed out, I have over 20 unique weapons and tons of items to play around with. You slot these items onto your Mercs before battle and can use them as cards in-play. The art style is cool and functional, everything looks like it should and it was lovely to see the old SA80 (L85) as an equippable Assault Rifle,. Oh the memories of being soaking wet, crawling in mud, starving hungry and icy cold but all the while lugging that thing along....sigh...you only remember the good times! Anyways, enough of my rambling, grab yourself a copy of the game, learn the mechanics of how to play and splat those Zeds good! It's an amazing price for what it is and the Dev seems to have a real joy in his work. He comes across as super keen to play the game as much as developing it. I can imagine him sat at the dinner table with his missus and positioning the sausages on his plate as he tells his wife about his latest mission! The sausages are now assaulting the mashed spud fortress defended by some astutely placed broccoli....All the while the long-suffering missus is giving him the eye-over-the-top-of-the-specs look...But I for one am glad that the game was developed by such an enthusiastic and keen person. I really look forward to seeing what is further ahead down the line for Dead Grid. Update 7 promises flamethrowers, what's not to like about flamethrowers??!!

Dead Grid is a really good turn based card game with loot/gear progression and interesting skill trees. Positives: Each Mercenary has three paths in their skill tree, a bit like a Borderlands skill tree in the way it's laid out. Each path usually offers a different playstyle compared to a neighbouring one, but some also have synergies between them too. There's also the "training" tab, where you assign points to specific weapons categories, so that particular Merc will be even better with it. I like the "noisy" approach, so I have all my Mercs set up for forgoing being silent. When my team enters combat it's nothing but gunfire and explosions. On the other hand you can go "quiet" and build into controlling the flow of combat more, so if you like the more subtle approach, there's ways to do that too. You can customise the loadout of your Merc's with the loot you find/buy from the trader. Which gives you another axis to lean into the playstyle you prefer. There's a large amount of weapons, accessories and gadgets. All these have different bonuses that can synergise with the skills of the Merc or your strategies. During a fight random events can occur, which can really shake up the encounter. Some are positive and some are negative. They add a bit of unpredictability to the fights which I really like. The feedback from the actions you take feels great. Everything feels like it has a lot of impact, I also like how occasionally it will transition away from the card view into the view of the scene itself to show you your Merc killing stuff. The UI is quite good and there's a few settings to customise it too. It gives you all the information for abilities and the descriptions for them is easy to understand. Which seems to be rare in games now with minimal information becoming more popular. The overall Sound design is quite good. The weapons sound punchy. Some of the voices are a bit goofy, but it adds to the charm of the game. The music is pretty good, it goes between a few different genres but nothing feels out of place. The graphics work well for the style of the game, they have gritty and darker tone. Nothing is an eyesore and the colour balance is good. Nothing looks "off". The Dev is active in the discussions and is very open to feedback. Negatives: The pace of the game may be off putting to some. You have to do a bit of grinding, where you will need to revisit the same locations repeatedly. However, revisiting locations over and over does increase their difficulty, so returning does offer new challenges at least. Managing your gear can be a bit tedious. More so the consumables, it would be nice if they were automatically re-equipped onto your Mercs if you have spares sitting in your inventory. Misc: I found Normal difficulty to be pretty easy, you may find it easy too if you are experienced in this particular genre. I'd recommend playing on Hard or higher if you want more of a challenge. You can change the difficulty later, if you find it too hard or easy. Conclusion: Dead Grid is a very fun and satisfying game that keeps getting better. It obviously isn't finished yet, but what's here does offer a good amount of play time. It's a little rough in some places, but it isn't so rough that it ruins the experience. It's very impressive for a solo Dev. For $15 AUD, it's definitely worth getting. Overall I'd give this game a 7.5/10. I rate things where 1 is absolutely awful, 5 is average and 10 is exceptionally perfect.

This game is excellent value even at full price. I played it a while ago and had 18 hours of fun, hopefully with more to come once new content is added. It keeps popping into my head and I just noticed I never reviewed it! Anyway it had fun tactical card-based battles against zombies, and a super-satisfying grindy levelling system for your squad and its equipment. Highly recommended.

I got the game while it was on sale, for like half off - its worth it. Now, full price? I'd still say its worth it after learning that the dev team is one man who has been constantly adding to the game and doesn't look like he'll stop anytime soon.
