A top-down immersive sim-type experience with a surprising amount of freedom of expression. I wouldn't necessarily call them builds, but the combination of your skills and equipment can completely change the way the game plays - you could turn it into Hotline Miami or top-down Ctrl Alt Ego if you wanted. The combat is extremely high-lethality, with 1-2 shots usually being enough to take out regular enemies (as well as you, the player), with the mitigating factor being built-in weapon inaccuracy. It can make the game pretty frustrating to pick up, but with a good loadout it stops being an issue, and at least gives the player a better chance of survival in open confrontation even if you don't run any combat skills. Base enemy reaction speed and view radius are also pretty cracked, so slow-walking through the level picking off everyone you see one by one is not exactly an option without speccing heavily into stealth. Alternative approaches include parrying the bullets with your melee weapon, mind control, necromancy, simply dodging through the bullets, or hacking, which will often lets you complete the mission without even really leaving spawn. The hacking system in general is really neat, and a great deal of care seems to have been placed into levels having interesting challenges if you go that route. And yeah, as the game description boasts, you can indeed hack individual bullets being shot at you, and while that isn't necessarily a feasible approach, it does demonstrate how ubiquitous the 'hackability' is - if you're good enough, and have a good enough loadout, you could probably explode like 5 dudes a second with your laptop alone. The game looks and sounds great even in its most basic form as you start playing, but what you wouldn't know until you get a good ways in is that DDS is hiding quite a lot of really cool setpieces - visual, narrative, and gameplay ones: the levels get a lot more diverse than the first few missions could lead you to believe. And it doesn't really care if you see any of them either, levels with wholly unique mechanics are completely missable if you don't talk to an NPC or choose a specific dialogue option. If you're anything like me, at least 2-3 playthroughs will be needed to see all the content. Regarding dialogue - it's definitely very quirky, so your mileage may vary based on personal preference; to me it stayed entertaining (and cute) all the way through, so I was always happy to see another conversation scene, especially whenever a new character showed up. There aren't any traditional RPG dialogue loops here either - if you see 3 options, you usually only get to say one, so choose your words carefully. Overall - wonderful game with a ton of content, unique look and feel, and a fresh take on the immersive sim type formula. The barrier to entry is quite high (the second or third main mission could easily take like 20 attempts to clear, but the difficulty curve evens out a little after that as you get access to more tools) but absolutely worth sticking through for the unique experience Deadeye Deepfake Simulacrum provides once you get familiar with the mechanics.

this game is like if deus ex, cruelty squad, and cogmind fused their DNA together and bred a beautiful homunculus from it, fed it with cybernetic implants, then forced it into a simulation where everything is exactly the same

The other reviews are generally correct. What they are failing to tell you is that this game has a very, very sharp learning curve. Think Shin Megami Tensei 4, and the minotaur is about concierge mission 2. If you can get past that, the game opens up very quickly and you get enough goodies to try all sorts of stuff. My only build advice is to commit: do one thing and do it well. But a very cool game, and a lot of interesting stuff going on if you can get there.
