Effective Underwater Horror Game That Almost Out-stays Its Welcome. Things I Like About Death In The Water 2: Heart Attack On Shark Attack [*]The whole game is based around one gimmick: survive the shark attacks. Every mission begins with an invisible timer ticking down. You must swim towards the designated location(usually where the oxygen resupply is), gather enough ammo and health packs, and search for hidden treasures marked on your compass for upgrades. Once the timer is up, you will hear a loud and unsettling sound reverberating throughout the water. That is your que which every single marine predator is on to you. [*]The ocean looks both stunning and scary. Not being able to see clearly what's out there is stress-inducing. And now there are sharks actively hunting you. One moment you see nothing beyond the murky water, the next you see the front of the shark rapidly approaching you. I cannot stress enough how many time I get jump-scared by multiple sharks, especially Great White and Hammerheads, when I turn around to search other areas. [*]You are not completely defenseless though. You start with a harpoon gun and can unlock up to four new weapons and two special throwables. Interestingly, all of your weapons either have a slow fire rate or need to be manually reloaded after each shot, which means you need to make every shot counts. This design plays extremely well with shark attacks. Shark charges towards you in a straight line. You hold your panic self together and aim right between its eyes. You wait till the right moment and take your shot, killing it instantly or forcing it to change course. [*]Of course this is the ideal situation. Most of the time you are going to face multiple enemies at once. Your survival depends on your aim and target priority: Reef Shark can be easily killed with a precise headshot; Mako Shark and Sand Tiger Shark are more resilient to damage so shoot them as soon as you see them; Hammerhead shark and Great White Shark are the real threats. The former's tiny, weird head shape makes it hard for you to aim, and the latter is nigh unstoppable without some serious fire power. Plus that weird smile you see when it swims towards you. It's horrifying. [*]Finding the right place to camp is also important. The map is decently diverse with locations. You can easily find caves, larger corals, and even ancient ruins to hide. Fewer angles for you to worry about means fewer opportunities for sharks to launch their gaping jaws. [*]However, there are also non-shark creatures that are problematic for you. Sea Snakes and Eels are often encountered in coral regions and see weeds. Both of them are easy pickings individually, but them swimming alongside other sharks can mess with your aim or even flush you out of the hiding spots. Things I Dislike About Death In The Water 2: 1. Repetitive Gameplay [*]As effective as the gameplay goes, it doesn't really evolve. You do the same arena survival until you either kill enough creatures or outlive the timer. You do it fourteen times and then fight a boss. That's it. No additional mechanics. No side quests or new collectibles. The only difference is that new enemies are slowly introduced until the eighth day, then the game throws tons of sharks at you. [*]Upgrades are not good either. All of them feels really inconsequential and conservative. You will not feel the "10% increase in reload speed for your harpoon gun" in the heat of battle. Surprisingly, there is no way to directly improve your guns' damage and your health value. [*]The story part of the game feels rather disconnected to the gameplay. Often time when the AI voice tells you to investigate somewhere, you would think you need to actually do some investigation like looking for something or collecting data. Yet, turns out the game just wants you to be here and do whatever you want until the timer runs out. 2. Other Complaints [*]The "headshot hit box" is really wanky. Sometimes you put a harpoon straight into the shark's head, but it just shrugs it off and keeps charging at you. [*]There are AI arts in the game. While they don't bother me that much but I can certainly see some people being turned off by this. [*]A translucent radar above the health bar as purchasable upgrade would be lovely. [quote=author]If you like what I write, please consider a follow to [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45738167/]my curator page, thanks!

It's hard to believe this a game created by only two people. It looks great, sounds great, and is way more unnerving than many of the horror games I've played. I don't have a fear of the ocean or big empty spaces, but always wanted to feel that panic. This is the only game that made me feel that ocean dread. Eat your heart out Subnautica, you didn't come close even with your building sized leviathans. Don't let the "2" in the title discourage you. It doesn't have anything to do with the first game. The first game is an endless survival against ever respawning sharks, this one has a story and levels in which you complete objectives.

The sound in this game is really well done. Very immersive. Visuals are also really good, adding to the overall tension and atmosphere in the game. The game-play loop is a bit simple. It boils down to a simple underwater shooter. Each "map" ("dive") follows the same pattern: First swim to the target location, second, find treasure and finally fight off an attack. As that loop is so simple, it gets repetitive quickly but it is saved by the great atmosphere. I pooped my pants several times.

This is my favourite underwater game. Looks stunning. Horror themed. Great weapons. Easy to pick up and play. Just trying to get that final achievement. Deserves a much bigger audience.
