Heard about this game back when it was announced a couple of years ago, and it was in the back of my mind since then. It is styled as an old-school 80's or 90's bootlegged software collection of games, and draws from IPs that are existing Devolver Digital games. The funny thing is that while many of these games draw inspiration from these Devolver-published games, they also generally copy a lot of old arcade and NES-era games in their execution and play style. I haven't "completed" the game, but I've messed around on it for a couple of hours. Here's my thoughts on each included game, after spending some time with them: Enter the Gun Dungeon: Bootleg Enter the Gungeon. The game plays a bit more like a lot of old arcade games where you navigate connected rooms and can move up, right, left or down into the next room, kind of like Smash TV. You are getting shot at constantly so you need to constantly move while shooting back at enemies. Pretty tough, but probably pretty well-made. Hotline Milwaukee: Bootleg Hotline Miami. Being a big fan of those games, this was the one I was really most excited to try out in this set. My first impressions were mixed because while this does look and feel like Hotline Miami in NES form, it also lacks a lot of the modern furnishings that made the original game so fun and great. You can't knock enemies down with doors, you can sometimes attack enemies through walls and sometimes can't for reasons I can't explain, and there's no lock-on feature. But it pays off later on with a little twist and the final boss that is reminiscent of the boss battles in the OG game. 21 levels, # 12 is a pain and the boss is hard. I am still trying to beat the boss. Ape Out Jr.: Bootleg Ape Out. This game is nothing like the original Ape Out, but functions more like Donkey Kong Jr. And that's fine, because it works out pretty wonderfully as a DK Jr. clone. Shootyboots: Bootleg Downwell. I have Downwell but haven't gotten around to trying that game yet. I didn't spend a ton of time with this one, admittedly, but it seems like it might be pretty similar to the actual game it is based off of. I guess, based off of what I've read elsewhere, it has less of a campaign and is more like this endless mode. Luftrousers 3: Bootleg Luftrausers. I also have Luftrausers but haven't gotten to try that game yet. Luftrousers 3 is actually pretty fun, though. You have 3 airplanes (lives) on an aircraft carrier and control one, fighting enemy planes and boats on a side-scrolling background that loops. You can occasionally buy new power-ups from a shop. Absolvers: Bootleg Absolver. It seems like a pretty big downgrade from the original game, honestly. I have played something like this before on the NES, but the name of that game escapes me. It requires 2 players to play, and you each pick a character and punch and kick each other. We're talking pre-Street Fighter. Cat Game: Bootleg Gato Roboto. Surprisingly decent, it is a pretty blatant clone of Castlevania, though. Instead of the robot suit, the cat (same cat, btw) has a suit of armor. Also pretty tough. Pikuniku Ball-Stars: Bootleg Pikuniku. Similar to Absolvers, it requires 2 players to play it. And it is also probably quite a downgrade from the original game. However, I will say that this might be kind of, sort of, fun. Maybe. You choose a character from Pikuniku and play basketball, trying to use your round body, noodly legs and a spring to bounce the ball into the air and knock it through the hoop. Don't ask me how they're playing basketball when they have no arms. When taken as a whole, Devolver Bootleg is a fun and goofy little collection that fans of Devolver's other games will enjoy. $5 isn't a bad price, but if you can get it on sale then that would be even more reasonable. If you're getting this because you're expecting another really solid all-around game from Devolver Digital, though, then I would caution against it. What you'll find here still isn't quite on the same level as most of the other games they've published. It's for funsies. (EDIT: I left my PC on all day at the boss fight in Hotline Milwaukee, just so I could come home and attempt to beat it. I'm pleased to announce that I did, in fact, beat that boss. I'm not sure which is the bigger miracle, that I got past that or that my computer stayed on that whole time so I didn't have to replay 20 levels just to get back there.)

It's honestly a good laugh and nails what it set out to do; deliberately make bad knockoffs of Devolver games. So far I've played Enter the Gun Dungeon, and cleared Hotline Milwaukee and Catsylvania. The ending of Catsylvania was honestly very unexpected. I must warn you though, NEVER open the game in a dark room (Speaking from experience). Also don't play it if you're sensitive to flashing images, as the game opening flashes like crazy. If you like Devolver games, you're likely to enjoy this, but as it's more of a joke title you might not come back to very often, I'd suggest waiting for a sale.
