the beauty of dome keeper is that there are no prerequisites. you don’t need to be in the zone or firing on all cylinders; it’s always there for a quiet 30-minute run, no questions asked. a game whose depth is revealed gradually, almost sneakily. you’re stranded on an alien planet, your dome is the only thing keeping you alive, and waves of monsters are on their way. between attacks, you drill down into the earth in search of resources like iron, cobalt, and water, bring them back up, and spend them on upgrades. then the next wave hits. then you do it again. every second you spend underground is a second you’re not at your dome’s controls. do you push deeper for the better materials, or play it safe and head back early? that risk-reward pull never really goes away, and it keeps every run feeling alive even when you’re technically doing the same things over and over. the roguelike elements help a lot here. each run is procedurally generated, gadgets and upgrades vary, and there’s a meta-progression system that lets you bring permanent perks into future runs. it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it’s well-tuned; you feel like you’re getting better at the game and getting a stronger character at the same time. as you keep playing, you unlock new domes, new worlds, new shields; each one comes with its own fun twist that actually changes how you approach a run. each new addition makes you think differently, experiment with new strategies, and find a new favourite setup all over again. it’s also worth mentioning how atmospheric the game is for something so small. the crash-landing setup, the lonely planet, the sense that you’re just trying to survive long enough to get out. it works. the latest updates allows you to defend and mine together with friends, and this is honestly where the game has resonated with me the most personally. there’s a particular kind of joy in coordinating with someone, one of you drilling deep while the other holds down the dome. it breathes new life into an already great game. I’d usually be in favour of waiting for a sale, but at $17.99, it doesn’t really drive a hard bargain to get it at full price. this one took me by surprise. a friend recommended dome keeper to me, I was not sold, like, at all. with due time, I went ahead and tried the demo, which foretold a different tale. I intend to do more with this game!

I loved this game up until I started repeatedly experiencing PowerPoint syndrome while playing the Endless mode in Prestige. The frame rate drops severely during battle after around wave 35 and it becomes unplayable. I love that the devs keep updating the game with more content, but please, do some optimizations. I don't need a new dome or keeper, I just need the game to be playable. Losing a great run because it turned into a presentation is one of the worst experiences in a game. Another complaint I have (which is rather minor compared to the poor optimization) is that sometimes the color palettes don't help at all. On some of the paler colored worlds, I can hear a Diver coming, but there's very little contrast between the warning particles/animation and the world's color background, and I'm left guessing which side the Diver is going to come from. Same goes for the aiming lines for the Artillery dome, sometimes it's hard to see where I'm aiming when the contrast between the line and the background is low. Maybe it's my aging vision, or maybe the colors look too pale, or maybe it's the low frame rate when there are so many monsters on the screen. Most likely it's all of those things combined. My vision isn't going to change, but I really do think an in-game option to adjust color contrast would be very welcome by many. Or at least stroke outlines. The devs were diligent and caring enough to include a few accessibility options, so why not look into this as well? Other than that, the game is fun. Testing new builds for Prestige is fun. The challenges are fun (need more of those!) and the music fits perfectly. It just needs optimization. Even thematically the game is interesting. I would write an essay on how it could be interpreted to be about ecocide and indigenous resistance, and how the dome keeper is actually the villain, but that's not the focal point of my review.

Dome Keeper is one of those games that pulled me in immediately. It genuinely feels like it was made for the Steam Deck. I’m playing it on a Steam Deck OLED in docked mode on an external Asus ZenScreen 1080p OLED Screen at stable 60 FPS. In this setup the game runs flawlessly, looks razor sharp, and remains perfectly readable at all times. The visuals don’t reinvent the wheel, but they are clean, intentional, and highly functional. From the main menu to the in-game UI, the information flow is excellent. Everything is easy to read, nothing feels cluttered, and there are no unnecessary distractions. At its core, Dome Keeper is easy to describe: Mining game meets tower defense. You land on an alien planet with your dome. Mine resources, manage them wisely, buy upgrades, and defend your dome against incoming waves. That’s the gameplay loop - and it works surprisingly well. The three resources - water, iron, and cobalt - are not explained in depth. At first this feels slightly cryptic, but it actually fits the game’s sense of discovery. It doesn’t hold your hand, and that works in its favor. I mostly play Relic mode and choose between the four map sizes, from small to huge. Thanks to procedurally generated maps, each run feels unpredictable. Even though you’re technically doing the same thing every time, Dome Keeper does an excellent job of hiding repetition. The difficulty is fairly scalable, making it accessible for newcomers while still offering a challenge for experienced roguelike players. Different domes, gadgets, and upgrade paths provide enough variety to keep things interesting. The soundtrack is atmospheric and slightly melancholic. Despite attack waves and time pressure, the game creates an almost meditative mood. That contrast is what makes it special: it’s essentially stress management - yet it feels surprisingly relaxing. After five hours of playtime, I’m genuinely impressed. If you enjoy roguelikes, chances are very high that you’ll enjoy Dome Keeper as well. Clear recommendation.
