One nice thing about strategy games like DotAGE is that they can help exercise the decision making parts of your brain, potentially delaying or preventing dotage Anyway this game is incredible. If village building centered around technology advancement, structure placement/upgrades, and strategic resource management sounds at all fun to you, look no further. It is also beautiful and charming with nice chill music

This is a perfect combination of sim builder, city management and puzzle, as the game gets you to not just manage your resources, but do it strategically in response to impending "doom" events. The game always keeps you moving and adapting, planning several turns ahead to make sure you aren't blasted by the capricious fates. In order to avoid "fear" events, you'll have to stockpile "hope." In order to overcome "sickness" events, you'll have to shift your focus to "health." Most of these events can be predicted by your elder's use of prophecy, but if you neglect one of these domains for too long, you'll get a sudden, unforeseen "reckoning" event. Add to this, of course, the normal food management, tech trees, and seasonal dangers common in city management sims. One of the most creative aspects of the game, however, and the one that really adds a "puzzle" dimension, is the importance of building-placement. In order to optimize your village and its production, you'll want to make sure certain buildings are clustered together or adjacent, while others are not adjacent. It starts off relatively simple, but becomes fiendishly difficult as the game progresses towards the Apocalypse. Actually, if you know what you're doing and can stay on top of the demands, it's not too difficult (on normal), but the problems can really snowball if you make a critical error. It might have you pulling your hair out as you realize you don't have enough hemp to make leather to make cloaks to survive the winter, and you should have planned ahead fifty turns ago. Now you're starving because you had to re-task a dozen pips to burning a dozen little bonfires--and you failed the event anyway, meaning now in addition to have no food, half your village is iced over and your pips have become pipsicles, and you won't have enough resources to both unfreeze your village and prepare for the coming sickness event. It's that kinda game. You've been warned! But man if it isn't incredibly fun and addictive.

I loved most of my time with DotAGE. Yet at the same time the entire experience is a struggle, which I'm going to say must be intended design. You really feel like you're struggling alongside your hopefully growing village, which you'll become attached due the game being so long. When they succeed, struggle or get wiped out, you can feel similar emotion since it's such a journey. Good stuff: - Demanding gameplay. - Cute pixel aesthetic. - Wholesome writing. - Depth. - Music is perfect, somehow never getting old - Replay value. Once you win, new games are significantly fresh because every class (village leader) is quite different, plus unlocking tons of new buildings. Neutral stuff: - *EXTREMELY* long. Be prepared for very painful loss after a 20 hour game. This time will vary widely based on how much you're thinking, but no person would consider this short for a roguelike. -Most of your starting and available buildings change significantly every run especially with if you change your starting village leader (basically like a character class). - Due to intense amounts of micromanaging your colony, gameplay loops may eventually be considered tedious. - Unlocking new buildings can be pretty annoying at first, beacuse you feel like you're missing important stuff in a very long game. But they did attempt to make it work out smoothly and not break the game by having unlocks. Very much enjoyed it. On harsher difficulties the gameplay just gets a bit too repetitive/tedious for how much micromanaging your'e required to do for success. It can create a slog. I think the game really shines on normal or hard difficulty. Regardless, absolutely love the game as long as you play in spurts. Until you burn out, it's amazing. Afterwards, you may need a break before returning.

I don't post many reviews, but I had a problem, posted in the discussion thread, and received a message from the dev with a solution to my problem. And the game is really good too.

Feels like the best parts of worker placement board games and colony sims wrapped up in a roguelike experience. Losing the game feels fair and it looks like there's a lot of content and replayability. The villages feel alive, but the game being turn-based means the stress feels... relaxing? Definitely recommend this game for anyone who wants a turn-based, board game version of Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, or Banished.
