Earth 2140 HD is a remastered window into a very specific era of real-time strategy design, one defined by straightforward resource gathering, base building, and large-scale unit clashes rather than deep tech trees or elaborate micromanagement. Developed by Reality Pump Studios and reissued by Topware Interactive ACE, this HD version preserves nearly all the structure and spirit of the 1997 original while updating resolutions, bundling expansions, and making the game more accessible on modern systems. What you get is a classic, hard-edged sci-fi war story where two massive factions — the United Civilized States (UCS) and the Eurasian Dynasty (ED) — battle over dwindling Earth resources after ecological collapse. With the world largely uninhabitable and civilization pushed underground, the stakes revolve around the last scraps of viable land and energy. It’s a bleak but compelling scenario, one that frames the constant conflict and gives context to dozens of missions. The gameplay itself is pure old-school RTS. Earth 2140 relies on a single primary resource and a simple economic loop: harvest minerals, power your structures with energy plants, build factories, research facilities, and churn out units. While the economic system is basic by today’s standards, it contributes to the game’s immediacy — you’re rarely bogged down with complex planning and can focus on constructing a base and directing troops. Unit variety is one of the game’s biggest strengths: everything from tanks and hovercraft to multi-legged mechs, air units, and even underground-capable vehicles enters the battlefield. The ability to reprogram certain disabled enemy units and add them to your army adds a fun twist, rewarding opportunistic players who push into enemy territory, cripple a hostile mech, and salvage it at the right moment. The HD version does little to alter the original’s mission structure, which includes over fifty scenarios spread across both factions. Early missions introduce units and systems gradually, but as the campaign deepens, the game expects you to juggle base expansion with defensive positioning and aggressive strikes. Certain missions emphasize survival, others require surgical strikes, and a few encourage all-out warfare. When Earth 2140 is at its best, it captures a rhythm of building up an army, scouting enemy terrain, and unleashing a coordinated assault that feels satisfyingly destructive. The mixture of ground, naval, subterranean, and air units gives some missions a sense of scale not always present in 1990s RTS titles. But as much as Earth 2140 HD showcases the charm of classic strategy design, it also exposes its age. The AI often behaves erratically: enemies might march units into poor positions, ignore opportunities, or fail to mount a credible offense. Mission difficulty can feel inconsistent, with some levels offering a balanced challenge and others devolving into attrition-based tank spam where the only “strategy” is outproducing the other side. Pathfinding is another frequent issue — units can stumble over terrain, get stuck behind buildings, or split awkwardly when ordered to move across long distances. While these quirks were common in older RTS titles, modern players may find them frustrating, particularly during tightly timed objectives. The presentation, while updated for HD, remains firmly rooted in late-1990s aesthetics. The terrain, unit sprites, and building designs are clean enough to be readable, but rarely evoke depth or atmosphere beyond their functional purpose. Sound design is similarly minimalistic, with serviceable explosions, machine noises, and radio chatter that do little more than support gameplay. What the HD version does achieve, however, is better clarity: higher resolutions make it easier to track battlefield activity, manage clusters of units, and navigate busy maps. For players seeking a nostalgic experience rather than a complete visual overhaul, the HD treatment is sufficient. Despite its limitations, Earth 2140 HD still appeals to a certain audience. Players who appreciate the purity of classic RTS systems — build base, gather resources, produce army, execute strategy — will find its simplicity refreshing. The large campaigns and mission count provide hours of content, and the setting offers a gritty sci-fi atmosphere without unnecessary narrative padding. The game is also extremely accessible on modern hardware, running smoothly even on low-spec systems, making it ideal for players who want a retro RTS fix without technical hassles. However, players expecting strategic complexity, strong AI, or modern refinements will likely feel that the remaster falls short of revitalizing an outdated design. The HD version is more of a preservation effort than a reimagining. It asks players to meet it on its own terms, embracing its occasional clunkiness in exchange for a straightforward, nostalgic RTS experience. Viewed as a time capsule, Earth 2140 HD succeeds. It reflects a formative moment in the genre’s evolution, where ambition in unit variety and mission count outpaced the technology of the era. Its flaws are part of its identity, and its strengths — simplicity, scale, and clarity of purpose — remain intact. For fans of classic RTS titles or those curious about the foundations on which later, more sophisticated games were built, Earth 2140 HD offers a worthwhile and surprisingly engrossing return to a world of relentless mechanized warfare. One of my most beloved childhood classics. This rts has very Terminator-like feel which is probably the reason why I always liked it so much :) Also for its time very nice graphics. Sadly the HD version indeed has broken AI so enemy never send their units to attack your base and sometimes they also don't produce new units. Thankfully there is fan made patch that repairs the game to it's original form called "Earth 2140 unofficial patch" which is also very easy to apply since it has its own installer. So if you like classic rts games give this one a chance ;) Small tip: If you want to watch the original epic intro and not the shortened HD version just delete the HD intro and replace it with the original one from the "classic" folder and it works ;)
