Epiphyllum in Love is a short but emotionally evocative visual novel developed by #workshop and published by NVLMaker. Positioned as the final entry in a trilogy of narrative-driven titles by the same studio, the game explores themes of memory, loss, identity, and the bittersweet remnants of love. Set in a near-future world where memories can be bought, sold, or erased, the story follows a protagonist who has traded away nearly all of their past in exchange for something unspecified—perhaps freedom, perhaps escape, perhaps survival. What remains is a lingering impression of a girl named Yin, a memory that persists like a flower that refuses to wilt. The narrative is primarily introspective, unfolding in a slow, dreamlike rhythm that aligns with the game’s central question: what happens to a person when their memories—their story—are no longer their own? The protagonist finds themselves in a school setting that feels both familiar and alien, surrounded by characters who may or may not have shared history with them. Yin is the emotional anchor of the game, appearing intermittently like a ghost from the past, her presence quiet but weighty. Ling, a spirited girl who claims to be your ex, and Ms. Xu, a teacher seemingly concerned for your well-being, round out a small but memorable cast. The relationships between these characters are subtly written, more about what is implied or left unsaid than overtly explained. Visually, Epiphyllum in Love is understated yet striking. The art style is soft, with gentle lines and pastel tones that enhance the game’s reflective atmosphere. The use of flowers—particularly the epiphyllum, known as the "Queen of the Night" for its rare and brief bloom—acts as both a literal and symbolic motif, representing beauty, transience, and forgotten moments. CGs (computer graphics scenes) are used sparingly but effectively, offering emotional punctuation to key scenes. These illustrations often feature characters framed in quiet, solitary moments, reinforcing the game’s focus on internal reflection rather than dramatic confrontation. The soundtrack complements the visuals with a minimal, melodic soundscape that underlines the gentle melancholy of the narrative. Music in Epiphyllum in Love isn’t meant to dominate the experience but rather to guide it softly along. It is ambient and evocative, often blending with the background to create a sense of detachment, as though the player is hearing an echo of something long past. The game avoids loud or jarring audio shifts, instead allowing silence and subtle tones to carry much of the emotional weight. Gameplay-wise, Epiphyllum in Love adheres closely to the traditional visual novel format. Most of the player’s time is spent reading text, occasionally making dialogue choices or selecting which character to interact with during short scenes. While there are choices, they don’t lead to dramatically divergent outcomes; rather, they serve to shade the emotional tone of your journey and affect your understanding of the story. It’s not a branching-path game in the way that some visual novels are, but instead a curated experience that leans more on atmosphere and interpretation. The brevity of the game—roughly 1 to 2 hours depending on reading speed—means that it doesn’t overstay its welcome, though some may wish for more time to dwell in its world. The theme of memory commodification is presented not as a dystopian warning, but more as an emotional exploration of what it means to forget and be forgotten. The narrative suggests that love can survive even when memory fades, and that some parts of us may linger regardless of how much we try to erase them. It’s a delicate, even poetic notion, delivered without heavy exposition or moralizing. Instead, players are invited to feel their way through the story, interpreting the significance of Yin, the meaning of the postcards, and the function of ephemeral blossoms in a life stripped of permanence. If there is a shortcoming in Epiphyllum in Love, it lies in its minimalism. The story offers a narrow slice of the world it inhabits, leaving questions unanswered and characters only partially explored. Some players may find the experience too slight or the character interactions too abstract to be satisfying. There is also limited interactivity compared to other visual novels, and those expecting branching narratives, complex mechanics, or in-depth relationship systems may be disappointed. But for players who are drawn to thoughtful, quietly emotional storytelling, these limitations might actually work in the game’s favor, creating a focused and undistracted narrative. In the end, Epiphyllum in Love feels less like a conventional game and more like a short story—fleeting, personal, and quietly profound. It doesn’t demand much in terms of time or challenge, but what it offers is a lingering emotional resonance. It’s a game that succeeds not through scale or spectacle, but through sincerity and mood. For those open to introspective storytelling and subdued aesthetics, it’s a brief yet memorable experience that, like the flower it’s named after, blooms once and leaves a lasting impression. Compared to the previous VNs of the series, I found this one to be the most mysterious one, plot-wise! While the story generally felt less dark compared to the other ones, I really appreciate the twisted writing (I wouldn't recommend reading the Steam description though, as it's quite spoilery). It was genuinely very intriguing to find out what actually happens, especially with the subtle foreshadowing. Also it's quite emotional and atmospheric with lovely music and art. Overall I really enjoyed this trilogy, I love how each VN has its own unique approach on similar themes, with all of them being beautifully sad.
