Reviewing this game as a single-player experience - I've participated very little in the multiplayer side of things. [[Edited 19th April 2026]] Equinox: Homecoming is a rare gem in the horse game world. Positives: - Very active and responsive dev team who take on board feedback. - I've not engaged much with the multiplayer aspects, but I've noticed the chat is always nice and supportive. Never once seen issues and it seems like a nice community. - Really engaging story, well written. - [[Edit: Good voice acting too!]] - Fun core gameplay loop with weekly tasks to keep you engaged. - Plenty to do - main/side quests, races, trail rides, collection-upgrade (RPG) mechanics, weekly tasks, multiplayer games (crown chases). [[Edit: once you have finished the main/side quests, there is definitely less incentive to play. The devs are looking at adding in-game events, which will help.]] - Beautiful open world which is lovely to ride around. - Ability to own multiple horses. - Nice customisability without being too overwhelming for those that just want to dive in and play (caveat: limited to 3 horse base colours initially but presumably they will update as they go with more horse models and colours). [[Edit: seems all new horse colours will be purchasable with premium currency only. Making chestnut a premium colour was a bizarre choice IMO.]] - Horse models and animations are nice. [[Edit: I'm not a horse expert, so I looked over other players' well-written concerns on the Dutch Warmblood horse model and I have to say, they have convinced me. The Dutch Warmblood model used in this game can be found for sale online as a Thoroughbred model. This needs addressing. The Friesian model is still nice.]] - Lovely soundtrack. - IMO the price of the game is very fair, especially for the base game without extras. You can buy DLC with premium currency which can either be bought with RL money or earned in game. DLC is nice - mostly aesthetic, but horse packs also come with a small amount of additional quests/stories to give you background on your horse. There's no pay to win mechanics at all. Devs have taken on board feedback about monetisation and done it very mindfully. [[Edit: DLC is currently overpriced for the stage of development the game is currently in. That said, you can still grind for it without paying!]] - Horse 'chores' (grooming etc) are short and satisfying, and the game doesn't punish you for not doing them. - When riding, horses will automatically slow down when navigating difficult terrain which makes them feel more alive. - The cozy while riding around, creepy while engaging with the story vibes are on point. Things to be aware of before you purchase: - This game is aimed at adults and does have swearing and some creepy imagery. - Some people have complained of the story being 'incomplete'; the intent is for the devs to continuously add chapters to the story, much like other MMOs, so it will never be truly 'done'. - You need decent specs to run the game (do a systems check!) but with a good PC, it runs beautifully with minimal lag/bugs since leaving early access. - While completing the story/interacting with the world, your character will always have the canonical name 'Alex', regardless of what name you give your character. - Similarly, your first horse is canonically male, although the game doesn't tell you that when you name it. - You absolutely can play this as a single-player experience but there are some aesthetic items you can only access if you participate in multiplayer elements. [[Edit: Discovered that if I make a club for just me, I can still passively earn one of the multiplayer-only currencies to earn rewards.]] - At base price, this game is a bargain. The riding pass basically ups your gains (XP, money) from completing quests, so it just means you don't have to grind as hard. You can enjoy the full game at the base price as long as you don't mind a grind. [[Edit: At the moment, the rider pass is not worth the money. You are better off getting the basic game and paying extra for the specific premium items you want.]] - [[Edit: You can currently rewatch cutscenes but not replay the story.]] Constructive feedback: - More idle animations and personality for horses wouldn't go amiss. It would be nice if they wandered off when you dismount, or graze if on grass etc - at the moment they are a bit meat motorcycle-y when not being ridden. - Ability to individually turn off more aspects of the HUD would be useful, as the screen looks cluttered and the chat notifications can be distracting. [[Edit: Now updated so you can turn off chat.]] - I love playing the game with my Xbox controller - it's a lovely and smooth experience. Not all aspects of the UI interact easily with the controller yet though, so I look forward to it becoming more controller compatible. - [[Edit: The game needed longer in early access. Devs are still tweaking things such as lighting, which really should have been resolved before 1.0 release.]]

I would rate this mixed, if I could. Well, I had some fun in the about 10 hours it has lasted so far, even though I don’t understand why they dropped the Early Access tag, because it’s clearly not a finished game in all aspects. Let’s start with the positive things. The voice acting that is already available is top notch. It’s literally AAA quality for me. The only little bummer is that not all lines have voiceovers yet. If they add voice acting for all conversations, it’s 10/10 in that category. Very good choices for the speakers, enjoyable to listen to. The story is also nice, I like it. The downside is that there are some questionable scenes where a 15 year old girl who looks like she is 10, or 11 at most, smokes and drinks, and I wonder why the developers felt the need to include that. It adds no value to the story and is completely unnecessary and creepy. The world design is generally beautiful. You can see that the person designing the map had fun while doing it. Lots of stuff to explore and see, and I like that. Graphics in the cutscenes are pretty. Foliage and water look nice as well. I wish we could disable the black bars in the cutscenes. The rest of the overall graphics look a bit dated though, especially the buildings, or the ground textures, which look ugly when you are in a town for example. Horses always seem to hover over the ground when they stand, instead of touching it, which also bothers me a lot. Can't be too hard to fix that. Horses and characters look a bit generic and I don’t see much variation, except for a few different colours. You can change hairstyle, clothes, shoes and stuff, but for example, you can't add scars, or freckles, tattoos or other more specific things. Multiplayer seems to be a way to populate the map, because there is not much going on in terms of wildlife and population. Many areas feel barren or dead, almost post apocalyptic. Even though the world is neatly designed with the resources they had, it lacks wild animals like birds, squirrels, frogs, or fish in the water areas, as well as rabbits, maybe cats, dogs, and NPCs that walk around. You know, normal things that happen in other games to make the world feel alive. Here you will find some deer that stand like robots near a lake, move their heads, and that is it, even if you get close. I think there is a lot of room for improvement. The worst thing about the game is the music, by far. The regular background music is just one annoying loop of mystery like sounds that do not fit to 99% of what's happening in the game at all. They should really work on that and add some proper ambient music. Additionally, there is a radio in the game, but that also consists of a weird mix of random nonsense tracks that feel completely out of place in the game. Maybe the person putting these together was deaf or tone deaf, then it is okay I guess and I apologize, tho. Nature and environment sounds are lovely though, so kudos for that. I must say that I have played tons of horse games and none of them come close to the realism and horse behaviour of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is still the benchmark to reach. But since that is an AAA title with a huge budget, it is not a fair comparison. So let’s compare the horse part to something like OSTWIND or Windstorm. In Equinox, the horse care part is pretty basic and disappointing. Cleaning the hooves is just one tiny scrub animation and then it is done. In OSTWIND and other horse games, you can properly control the hoof pick and move it around, which is a lot more fun than just pressing a single button to see a lazy animation. The same goes for feeding the horse and general horse care. You get the point, it is all too basic. Riding animations are a little wonky and not very fluid. Character walking animations also look awkward. Especially annoying in the riding part itself is that the horse and the walking character alike get randomly stuck on almost every tiny map elevation or object. If you want to walk around and go a little too far down or up a slope, your character often gets stuck in the ground or even in the air. Then all you can do is respawn at the stable. Races were not really my thing because of this either. You do your best, take corners, accelerate and brake, then one tiny mistake, you cut a corner wrong and the horse gets stuck on the side and just stops. In the worst case you have to walk backwards to get out of the situation before you can continue. That is not fun or enjoyable. As I mentioned earlier, it would probably have been better to keep the game in Early Access until the bugs and issues are fixed, until the voice acting is completely done, and until you can fully play the story. Then maybe focus on customization, multiplayer features, and additional content once that is finished. Also, a photo mode for proper screenshots in the future would be nice. For now, the story suddenly stops after Chapter 3, so once you are done with the side quests after about 10 hours, that's it for now. Overall, I would say that if you are aware that this is far from being a fully “ready to release” game, with some bugs and issues, it can still be fun to ride around, explore the neatly designed map, play the story, and see what it will be like after a few more polishing updates and once the story is completed. So far, there is about 10 hours worth of content, plus some more or less interesting multiplayer stuff. Be aware that this is not for kids, since there is a questionable addition of a 15 year old drinking and smoking and a lot of swearing going on.

Updated Feedback: Since this game officially released I thought I'd give an updated review as someone who has almost over 80 hours in this game. Part of the critisism that I mentioned still stands. I still think NPCs and Horses would benefit a lot from having more animations doesn't matter if the would just look around or even walk a bit etc. They give a bit of an uncanny vibe. Imo the prices for the horses are fine since I saw a lot of people complaining about that it would take forever to grind for these horses if you dont wanna spend real money which i kinda get but also its a lifeservice online game. Maybe the weekly rewards could be a little bit more. Another thing that I still wanna critique is the lackluster feeling of quests. As I said before most of the time you just ride around and press E and that still sadly hasnt changed. I'm a huge fan of riding around collecting whatever since it has a really calming vibe to it and its really relaxing but it gets boring after a while to just basically ride from A to B press E and that's it. You can still not brush ur horse nothing like that which I find kinda sad :C so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us more to do like minigames etc. Talking about collecting, I think it would be really cool to be able to note or remember somehow where you can find different resources on the map (kinda like rdr2 does it) I know there's an app for it and all that but I dont think you should be needing an app for such things necessarily. Another thing that I find kinda frustrating is Crews in Crown Chase - while it is kinda fun I think there is a problem for Solo players who only play against Crews since they love to just pass around the crown to their crew members and it can get frustrating if you have like 4 to 5 crew memebers in a session with you. While I would still recommend this game there is a lot that needs to be done. And I know the devs are trying their hardest to stay in touch with the community and are also really active in the community discord server which is appreciated! The Story is great, the world is beautiful (I still wish for more wildlife tho) and its overall a really interesting game! OH AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEE LET US JUMP FREELY it would help so much with getting stuck in specific areas where you could easily jump down or over from. That's all for now!:D I'd definitely recommend this game even tho its still in early access. It has a lot of potential and I can't wait for the story to continue and for the cinematics to be added :D What I'd like to see: - More interactions in Quests since most of the time you just have to ride somewhere press E and than thats it. I think certain Quests could really be more interactive like cleaning horses for example like let us brush the horses ourselves if we want & stuff like that cause Quests can get kinda dull after a while. - Make it able for us to jump down areas that arent as high. Gameplay feels a bit clunky when you could easily jump down somewhere but the game is like: no - Maybe give characters face animations outside of cutscenes cause they tend to feel a bit uncanny sometimes. Also all male NPC's tend to have the same face. - I would love to see more animals in the woods or nature in general. That's all I can think of for now :3 but overall I really really enjoy this game, it's really fun and beautiful and like I said already it has a lot of potential and I would definitely recommend buying it! Can't wait for further updates and I appreciate the devs for paying attention to the communities feedback! <3

i have been playing since EA release date. i absolutly love this game, i grew up with SSO and it lost it's magic to me when i got older, from being a story game to now just being a buy horse, train horse, buy new horse repeat. to parents thinking about getting this game for the kid below 16 years of age: THIS IS NOT A KIDS GAME! keep your children away, it deals with too many adult themes with murder, suicide and self harm. in my own words, this game has stunning graphics, amazing story so far, and with it only in EA this game has so much more to give, i play a lot of EA games and most of them i know will never leave that EA title but this game is the first one i truly believe will. the horse animation could use some work still, but from their roadmaps they complete them before they say they will which is amazing to have from something that is EA. for any adults that played SSO when they were young or still do this game is for you for sure! they have a new breed coming soon and i can't wait!

Review in Early Access after Patch 12 (25th September 2025) Kind of surprised to see so many reviews point out how the game is unfinished / lacking in content in some areas. It's in early access. It's nowhere near fully fleshed out just yet. That said for the current asking price of €25, there's already a very solid foundation in here with bucketloads of potential for more. TL:DR - I'm highly enjoying what's here in this early access title and am really excited to see where the future development of this title goes. Now on to a few more detailed comments... Visuals are very smart, the world looks very pretty if a little lifeless (not much to really *do* outside of finding collectibles), performance is very smooth (i7 CPU with 4070 GPU). The story is intriguing although currently unfinished. My only real gripe with the story is with the dialogue where the main character regularly swears. I'm not keen on that style of dialogue writing but it's a minor gripe. I'm very much looking forward to seeing where the story goes as it leans heavily into murder mysteries, the occult and the supernatural. All right up my alley! For audio you are mainly given some ambient / atmospheric sounds during gameplay with an odd piece of music chiming in only for certain areas (such as the barn or fishing village). What's there is good and the ambient sounds while exploring the map give off a very eerie and mysterious vibe as you'd expect. Outside of the campaign story chapters, you are given quests to do and races to participate in. The quests are mainly fetch quests - go to A, collect an item, bring it to B. Despite their repetitive nature I still enjoy doing them as they do take you on journies across the map, meeting people and seeing places you might not otherwise go to. The races are also a nice break from the norm and essentially act as obstacle courses (including jumps at times) where you can really stretch your horses legs and try and set best times for rewards. These are fun little distractions from the main game and good fun if you participate in races with friends as you all push each other to set the fastest times. The horse controls have drastically improved since the game was first released and are even quite fluid once mastered. Currently you do not have a lot of customisation options for the horses appearance but these will be fleshed out a lot more in a future update (as per the development teams comments). The studio behind the game have been very open and honest with their plans for this game, genuinely listen to player feedback and are putting out content very quickly since the games release. They're doing a great job and deserve immense credit. As I said earlier in this review this game is packed to the brim with potential and up to the time of writing this review, I'm really happy with its direction. There's a damn fine game in here that's improving with every new patch and content release by the development team.
