Final Fantasy VIII Remastered – A Journey Through Time I first played Final Fantasy VIII back in 1999, and even then, the main character, Squall, resonated with me deeply. His struggle to communicate his thoughts and emotions felt relatable, while Laguna represented the kind of person I aspired to be—someone who embraced friendships, took risks, and kept moving forward despite setbacks. Now, on this second playthrough with the remastered version, I found myself appreciating the game on a much deeper level. While FFVIII’s gameplay and story can be complex—even for the most focused player—I’d recommend taking the time to understand the underlying themes. The real heart of the story isn’t just in the plot; it’s in the characters themselves. Once I let go of trying to piece everything together immediately and just enjoyed the journey, I found the experience much more rewarding. Gameplay & Mechanics – A Fresh Perspective The Guardian Forces (GF) and magic system can be as powerful as you allow them to be. Back in 1999, I relied heavily on GFs, which was a blast at the time. However, this time around, with a better understanding of the Junction system and the Triple Triad card game, I optimized my team at a lower level, using their unique abilities to my advantage more effectively. This approach added a new layer of strategy that made the game even more fun. Looking back, my younger self would be amazed at how much I’ve "leveled up" as a player. I pushed for a 100% completion run, collected all the cards, and mastered each character’s Limit Breaks—from Quistis’ Degenerator to Squall’s Lion Heart, which made combat feel incredibly rewarding. A Must-Use Feature – 3x Speed Boost It’s worth noting that Final Fantasy VIII originally had a slow-paced battle system, which might feel sluggish by today’s standards. Thankfully, the remastered version includes a 3x speed boost, which I highly recommend using. It makes grinding, battles, and general exploration much smoother without taking away from the experience. Final Thoughts Revisiting Final Fantasy VIII has been both nostalgic and eye-opening. While some aspects of the game might feel dated, its storytelling, character depth, and unique gameplay mechanics still stand the test of time. Whether you're a returning player or a newcomer, take your time, embrace the journey, and enjoy the ride—because Final Fantasy VIII is more than just a game; it’s an experience.

Way better than I remember, to be honest. I remember tearing into this game when I was younger after coming off the absolute joy of Final Fantasy 7 and Tactics, thinking this was a step down in terms of story and game play. And it is. The game is intensely shallow with a system that punishes you for engaging with it. The best way to win is to not fight. Get as little XP as possible, play a ton of Triple Triad, turn your cards into items and those items into spells. Buff yourself with those spells and go hog wild with end game stats against level 10 enemies. To top that off, the story is definitely kind of all over the place. Its disjointed and hard to follow, even now that I'm an adult and have the mental capacity to understand what's going on. But all that doesn't matter. The story might be kind of all over the place, but in the moment the melodrama is exciting. The whole combat system might be kinda goofy, but its still fun and infinitely customizable. And most of all, the characters are fun and endearing. They're a bunch of goofy teenagers who really have no idea what they're doing but by god, they're doing it and they're gonna do their best at it. Adjust your expectations to it, and Final Fantasy 8 is a wonderful, memorable experience. If you try to come at it like its going to stand toe to toe with Final Fantasy 7, 6, or 9, and you'll walk away disappointed.

Spent 15 hours drawing. Remembered I was doing it wrong. Drawing Meltdown for 15 more hours. Squall’s still emo, Seifer’s still a tool, and Triple Triad is still the true endgame. 10/10 would awkwardly flirt with a sorceress at a ballroom dance again.

The score alone has kept me coming back for 25 years I bought Final Fantasy VIII originally when released in 1999 for PlayStation and again when Remastered dropped on PSN in 2019, so my many hours aren't logged here. Despite that, in 25 years I still haven't managed to clear this beloved title, though I've come close twice. That's neither here nor there really because I have happily played this game like it's the multi-hour Nobuo Uematsu music video it is. Seriously, this score is on par to the composer's Final Fantasy VII soundtrack in its delight and range. "Balamb Garden" and "Eyes On Me" by Faye Wong were tracks that colored my adolescence more than I care to admit. It took me a long while to realize I would keep returning to this game because of the music, more than the gameplay. But don't just go out and get the soundtrack just yet. Remastered is a whole lot prettier in 4K on PC with the high-res models than the polygonal jitteriness of the original on PlayStation, though the seemingly untouched pre-rendered backgrounds are lackluster and in need of attention; I'm sure a high-res upscale fan mod probably exists to clear that up like fans did with VII . But this remaster does include some nice features like cheat modes to turn off encounters and the ability to speed up the game by a factor of 3--huge for the repetitive GF animations that you must sit through for their damage (hey, they were awesome to watch in the 90s but we're all over scantily-clad Shiva. Ain't nobody got time to watch her throw ice 100 more times.). But why haven't I cleared this in a quarter century of having it? Turns out you need to actually take time to understand junctioning, and grind a fair bit on top of that. Being the caveman Quake/FPS player that I am, math and stats were for nerds, and I was ignorant to how JRPGs like this worked. (Again, I blame the charm of the soundtrack for keeping me just racking up hours than trying to understand it.) So I deserved to be annoyed when I got to the end, twice, and discovered I couldn't beat the final fight as I hadn't been strategic with my magic or fought enough fights. That's my only warning I have for you and my largest complaint of the game: clock your hours and level up, no cutting corners. The rest of this game, well, it's just honey and summer, bliss to behold and hear even if the in-between encounters can stall things. With the help of the fast forward, I plan on making my final shot with this. Third time's the charm..?

I didn't really know or expect much jumping into this game. Classic high-school romance, right? Maybe. It was hard to get my head around the ancient game design and menus. But there was something refreshing about that. I didn't know it was going to be a 50+hr experience, but it never felt like a drag. The characters felt real, And I learned something valuable from each of them. I learned a lot from this game, It made me reflect. I would recommend it to anyone.
