The last time I played this game was in 1999. I played the remastered under the calculated risk/assumption that revisiting a beloved childhood game as someone now in his late 30s would still be enjoyable given how good the game itself is. And.....this game still is awesome ! Having said that though, thank god for the remaster. You need patience with older games because their pacing is slower, especially the JRPGs of the 90s. Being able to speed up the game by three times was a godsend, or choosing to switch off random encounters when exploring places and getting lost. Really did much to keep the pace of the game matched to my older and more impatient self! That and casting a Guardian Force and sitting through a 30 second animation each time and multiply that by most fights just means that 3x speed was on speed dial! The only other negatives for me is that it's a shame they didn't touch up the backgrounds in the way they did the character models. The background still works, but it's a minus for sure. The other one would be with the way triple triad gets overly complicated later in the game. The more places you visit the more rules get added, and that's ok, but it would be nice to have an option to pay the queen of cards to remove some of the added rules, even if it's for the next 10 games. Finally, the last slight negative is some of the side quests are bit boring (lake side mission I'm looking at you). Obviously these were easter eggy sidequests done back in the day to keep people playing and epxloring but jesus christ how was I ever expected to figure these out as a 12 year old? and as an adult they were more tedious than they were worth. What's good: The story still holds up, a love story across generations with the looming threat of time manipulation magic installing a sorceress who will enslave the world! An incredible soundtrack, absolutely serene and beautiful locations like from a dream world. The combat system is fun, the junction system is great, albeit it does reduce magic casting since your best magics will be junctioned. The characters are fun and strike a balance overall between goofy and serious that keeps the overall tone of the game in the 15-25 demographic. But just following the story beats, this game is incredibly action packed. If you wrote out the plot points from disk 1 and 2 alone it would seem like a fantasy action game story. There's definitely some issues with the translation that haven't been touched up (squall coming accross as nonchalant dick with his 'whatever's all the time). But overall a timeless classic game from an era when video games didn't have hollywood budgets. I used to wish for a remake, but given how 7 is being done, I'd prefer squeanix never remake this one for now, until they rediscover their roots and their writing! 9.5/10

I've played FF VIII multiple times over my lifetime, and and completed it again, as I just recently picked it up on steam during a sale. I think FF VIII is best described as the "Cost of Innovation." Critically looking at this game after the 5th or 6th time now (I've lost count), it's clear why this title has had such a polarizing impact on the FF community. On one hand, the leap in graphical fidelity and stylized characters really shows how Square was trying to push the boundaries of game design, immersion, and world building. On the other hand, you have a clunky junction system which pales in comparison to the Materia system from FF VII, and a story that takes one too many liberties to vest you into the plot. And that's sort of the unfortunate thing about it... Everything FF VIII did was all in a bold attempt to strike lightning twice, coming off the heels of a game which revolutionized modern gaming, once it was released on PS1. I appreciate Square for taking risks back in 1999, in era when it was okay to fail in the pursuit of good ideas. FF VIII etched it's place in my heart and it will always remain there. It's not perfect, but it has become a classic over the past couple of decades and I do still think it's worth the play, in spite of it's flaws. It's not really about if it holds up today, but more of a window to that time and what this game represented in 1999.

Underwhelming "remaster" Still love the game. Really like Squall and his character development over the course of the game. The same goes for the rest of the supporting characters. 3x speed and autosave is the two big things it has over the other PC port.

You'll either love it, replaying it 10 times in your life, still learning new things and becoming a core memory of you childhood (or adulthood if you missed the boat due to Age Diff); or you'll hate it, where its still very playable and enjoyable, in the sense that theres so much to talk about why you dislike it. Its one of those kinds of games where even if you dont like it, you can still finish it and understand why other people like it.

My first Final fantasy, and still my favourite. I used the game breaking exploit of card mod at the beginning, which was a bit of work but allowed me to breeze through battles and enjoy the story uninterrupted. A great choice for anyone who enjoys the basic FF formula and doesn't mind mixing it up with levelling, as this game is unique from the others. Enjoy not grinding!
