Folie Fatale, developed by Kanmidoko (神海処) and published by 346lab Localization, is a visual novel that veers sharply from convention, weaving psychological horror and romance into a narrative that is as emotionally jarring as it is engrossing. From the outset, it positions itself not just as a dark story but as a deep exploration of obsession, vulnerability, and the terrifying fragility of the human mind. At its center is a seemingly ordinary high school girl—Sakura Natsuki—who, for reasons beyond her control, becomes the gravitational center for a series of deeply disturbed men. These are not simply "flawed" love interests; they are emotionally volatile, dangerously obsessive, and at times, outright threatening. The game doesn’t flinch from showing the consequences of their mental instability, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a psychological trap than a love story. The structure of the game is relatively straightforward in visual novel terms: choose your route, make decisions, uncover different endings. But Folie Fatale enhances that formula by giving each of its five main characters multiple endings—three standard, and one secret per route—plus an unlockable bonus path that extends the story in an unexpected direction. Each route dives deep into the psyche of its respective male lead, slowly unraveling their traumas, delusions, and motives. While some endings steer toward disturbing intimacy or tragic consequences, others explore what it means to survive or even love someone irreparably broken. These paths aren’t simply alternate conclusions—they reflect different psychological outcomes, offering an unsettling sense of realism in how trauma and obsession can unfold in unpredictable ways. One of the most compelling aspects of the game is its unapologetic commitment to discomfort. It doesn’t merely dip its toes into dark subject matter—it dives in headfirst. Themes of self-harm, emotional dependency, suicidal ideation, stalking, codependency, and even incest appear at various points in the story. Yet, this is not horror for its own sake. The writing, while melodramatic in places, takes these themes seriously, aiming not to exploit but to expose the kinds of deep-seated wounds that can fester in relationships built on fear, need, and guilt rather than trust. The characters are often pitiable, sometimes loathsome, and rarely simple. You’re not asked to love them in spite of their flaws—you’re asked to understand how love itself can become the flaw. The game’s art style does a remarkable job of reinforcing its uneasy tone. Character designs balance between attractive and subtly unsettling, using expressions, body language, and carefully detailed backgrounds to create an atmosphere that shifts from deceptively serene to psychologically claustrophobic. The UI is clean and functional, though entirely in Japanese and Simplified Chinese, which might limit accessibility for some players. Despite its relatively short length—most routes can be completed in a few hours—the game makes efficient use of its time. The pacing is tight, sometimes almost too tight, with some story developments arriving abruptly or lacking sufficient buildup. Still, the brevity helps avoid filler, making the emotional swings hit harder. Folie Fatale’s most significant strength lies in how it redefines the visual novel romance format. Instead of providing players with idealized love interests and cozy narrative arcs, it offers a gallery of characters who are, in many ways, antagonists to their own stories. Their mental health issues are not surface-level quirks but central to the plot, and navigating their paths feels less like flirting and more like walking a psychological minefield. That tension is precisely what gives the game its power. Each decision feels weighted, not just in terms of plot progression but in terms of emotional consequence. Do you soothe or confront? Do you run or stay? The answers are never obvious, and even the "right" ones can lead to devastating outcomes. Still, Folie Fatale is not without flaws. Some players may find the routes uneven, with a few characters receiving more narrative attention or more satisfying arcs than others. Certain twists feel rushed, likely a consequence of the game’s compact structure, and some endings lack the emotional resolution their build-up seems to promise. Additionally, without an official English translation, the game remains inaccessible to a wider global audience, which is unfortunate given its strong thematic resonance and unique storytelling approach. That said, fan interest in unofficial translations speaks volumes about the game's impact within niche visual novel communities. The additional content released post-launch, including the DLC titled “交錯ファナティシズム,” expands the game further with new storylines, deeper dives into character psychology, and even seasonal scenarios like a winter-themed dating sequence. These updates help round out the characters and inject a touch of levity, though even in its lighter moments, the game never completely abandons its darker tone. Instead, it uses these contrasts to reinforce its central idea—that love, in all its forms, can be as destructive as it is beautiful. In the end, Folie Fatale is not a romance visual novel in the traditional sense. It is a psychological descent dressed in the trappings of dating sim conventions. For those looking for heartwarming relationships or fairy-tale endings, this game will likely prove alienating, perhaps even offensive. But for players drawn to narrative risk-taking, emotional ambiguity, and the horror that often lies beneath desire, it offers a uniquely unsettling and unforgettable experience. It demands that you look love in the face—and ask whether it's truly love at all. Rating: 8/10

Great otome game with an interesting concept! I played the Japanese version and completed all the endings in about 15 hours. The routes are fairly short and it's easy to clear without a guide thanks to the gauge. (However some endings are not accessible before clearing other ones.) All characters are more or less "yandere" or at least red flags, but each in a very unique way. The game also has a general plot linking all the routes together, so I would recommend clearing all the endings to get the full picture. (Also Lito = best boi.)

Not bad at all, only if this kind of stuff is your cup of tea tho. DO NOT get it if you can't accept the themes 总体来说是个很不错的游戏,只要你能接受这种稍稍重口的就行。CG都很好看,男主们也都很有特色。
