This is the furthest thing from an impartial review. I have played a normal amount of hours of this game since release and I like it a very normal amount. With that out the way: Fright Train is awesome. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first, but it got its nasty little teeth into me and has not let go. Gunplay is fast and fun, and its a game that really, really rewards you taking the time to learn and master it. The games visual style is stunning, a real love letter to the genre and to the games whose inspiration it wears proudly on its chest, and it is extremely stylished and polished. The story is like like a furry lovechild of Resident Evil, and the gameplay is like a more arcadey Dead Space - if the rougelike tag put you off, and you're tired of games that blast you with pick three non-choices, have no fear, because Fright Train is anything but. It's actually deceptively difficult, but in a way that you can pick at and unravel and master, and eventually you'll be blasting through hoards of enemies like Doomguy. The design - the actual gameplay itself - is impeccable. It might be repetitive for some, but the variation in enemy groups, strategic choices and train layouts keep things fresh run after run. It can feel overwhelming at first - you have two health bars, for example, yours and the train, and if either hit zero its basically game over - but over time, the mechanics all click into place, and you no longer have to second guess what you should be doing or how to survive certain situations, and it feels like well oiled machine. Narratively, I said this game is like a Resident Evil game, and I mean that in the best way possible. Its campy, its fun, its gory, its got mutants and ghosts and evil geniuses, and the voice acting is a lot of fun. Doug Barker in particular is a fun protagonist, who ultimately feels at home among other protags of the genre, even if he lacks a few things that help him stand out. Its a furry B-Movie turned into an arcade shooter and I absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love it. Over all, its rare that a game grips me in this way, and considering it was made by a tiny two person team of husbands the sheer quality and love put into it is absolutely staggering. Please! Play this game. Give it a chance to steal your heart the way it has mine, and experience the joy of blasting through zombies in pursuit of a high score. The dev's have been incredible, patching bug after bug and making tweak after tweak to make it the best game possible, and they more than deserve your money. If nothing else, look at the hours I have in this game, and let that speak for itself. My one and only complaint is that I pretty, pretty please want more. More monsters, more guns, more train layouts, gimme gimme gimme. This may not be a game for everyone, but it is absolutely, 100% a game for me. More!!!
If you're looking for a change of pace from arcade roguelites where you just hold down the trigger and roll away, Fright Train is an easy recommendation. The atmosphere does heavy lifting right out of the gate. The setting alone (a claustrophobic research train plowing through an Antarctic storm) builds a constant tension. Every moment inside (or outside) the train sets a genuine horror mood. What really sold me, though, is how the game bridges tactical survival mechanics with a roguelite loop: Your rig has distinct gear slots with actual draw-speed percentages and items physically render right on your character’s back. It forces you to use quiet moments between rooms to prep and adds a layer of strategy in your run planning. When a wave hits, your panic isn’t punished by cheap RNG; it's punished because you walked into a car with half-empty mags or put your critical supplies in a low-percentage slot. It’s challenging, but deaths feel earned. It captures that grimy, sci-fi B-movie charm while offering a methodical, high-stakes loop that makes each attempt feel distinct. Massive respect to the dev team! This is a really smart, original take on the genre.
