This game is a very good digital adaptation of the board game, which was the number #1 rated board game for quite a while and for good reason. If I had to summarize the gameplay, it's a story-light dungeon crawler tactical RPG with a big focus on player-agency. With 21 characters in total each being completely different in terms of gameplay, branching storylines, and co-op, you get a whole lot of game for its price. Pros: - Unprecedented amounts of player-agency with low-RNG. If the game throws something at you, it also always provides a choice for you, eliminating the feeling of getting scammed by unlucky "rolls". - Diverse game styles with over 21 characters. Each character feels unique and different, so you have to learn new strategies, come up with new builds. Not to mention 420 different character combinations in 2-character parties, and even more variety with 3p and 4p sizes bringing it to 152040 possible party comps. - Progression feels rewarding and well-designed. Be it in the form of new items or new ability choices, you always feel like you have choices here as well. - Lots of scenarios with different win-conditions. - The vibe of the game is spot on - it captures the sort of grimy mercenary band feeling. - Makes it easy to play a scenario compared to the physical board game. Completing Gloomhaven would take around 300 hours (+50 hours for Jaws of the Lion) in total when playing the physical version. The digital cuts down on that by a huge margin. This makes the gameplay shine even more. - The narrator does an amazing job! It makes the otherwise limited story much more engaging. Cons: - The game does a poor job of explaining the difference between Jaws of the Lion and regular Gloomhaven scenarios. - I was quite confused what guildmaster mode is at the beginning. Placing it at the top is a poor decision imho. - Sound design: the soundtrack + sounds are fine, but very restricted. There are about 4 music tracks in total, which are well-made but gets quite repetitive in 100~ hour game. The character sounds are basically random grunts/inarticulate shouting that repeat when getting damaged or attacking. - Character designs are quite lacking, imho they don't do the original drawings justice. - If you've never played the board game, the digital version's tutorial tries to explain the rules but it still feels incomplete (what each condition does, when does it clear etc.) - The story can feel disjointed with 50~ side scenarios in total. The narrative is a weakpoint as a whole, that's definitely saved by the amazing narrator.

This is an excellent game in almost every aspect, even the ambient music is nice to have on in the background whilst studying - BE WARNED HOWEVER that you'll want to purchase the boardgame after playing this for roughly the cost of one kidney, and itll take sixty thousand years to set up and play through. Its all very good, but its all very addictive. Good thing I dont have kids.

It's fine, but a word of warning: I played this game first on a physical board game, with friends. Playing it solo, digitally ... is significantly worse. Now, I'm not saying it's bad. It's actually, functionally, just like the board game. However, this has made me realize that the game itself isn't all that amazing. It's mostly playing with friends that made it good.

I hated this game at first but I was playing it wrong (Tutorial, then campaign on normal). The correct way is to straight to Guildmaster which includes everything in the tutorial anyway with character intros, and start on easy or one level lower than you normally would. That to me feels like the best way to approach this beast for beginners. I really enjoyed it once I figured that out. Guildmaster to learn the game, then on to the campaign once you feel like you know how things work more or less.

Recently came back to Gloomhaven after a long time away, and I suddenly like it much, much better! I've played for more than 5 hours, but mostly offline. Recommendations for beginners and frustrated players: 1. Start with Guildmaster mode. The tutorial and balancing are designed for single players running all characters. Original board game mode isn't. 2. Each card has FOUR options, not two. You can always skip the fancy move on the card, and instead click on the little Move 2 or Attack 2 tabs in the middle. This helps you keep moving and not burn through your entire deck. 3. Don't use TTRPG or Turn-Based Tactical tactics for navigating dungeons. Gloomhaven's rules are way more abstract, and you have to learn them. For example, you need to always be thinking about how to get through (or at least into) every room. This often means moving on before everything in one room is dead. 4. The more characters you send on a quest, the higher their total level had better be. If you're training level 1s on a travel quest, it's best to take only two. For a relic or survival quest, four seasoned adventurers, including one designated healer, may have enough extra options to overcome the raised difficulty, while two might not. 5. FAILURE COSTS NO RESOURCES! Play out doomed missions. At least in Guildmaster, you get to keep whatever loot and XP your heroes got before they became "exhausted." Theoretically, you could "fail to the top."
