This is a very good tower defense game. I was hoping it was just like sunken defense... it's not, but that's okay. Roguelike elements require you to balance growing your economy and army at the same time. Sometimes you can feel a dud run coming, especially if you picked a starting class that might not great for the biome you picked. You can always restart/re-roll. Yes, you can control the path of your enemies.... but not in the same capacity you would funnel your enemies in sunken defense. Would recommend even at full price.

Several things that stand out and might help you decide on a purchase: 1. It feels like a complete game. I think it's finished enough that even if development were to halt today, it'd still be worth it. 2. A sign of good game design is when there's multiple good strategies for taking care of a problem. I found myself using multiple techniques and varieties of tools to play, and I managed to beat the game using a variety of them all. There's probably a META out there but I found the game challenging enough to be fun and frustrating. 3. You'll know whether or not you want to refund it in less than 2 hours, so don't worry. The game's tutorial is only a few minutes long, and it's not super complex. If you wanted a letter grade I'd give it a B, maybe a B+. It's pretty good.

I love tower defense games, so when I say Gnomes has claimed the top slot of my tower defense recommendations, its not something I throw around lightly. This game is seems simple but it matches up fantastic, difficult mazing, an extremely tight economy, a dope retro aesthetic and enough variance to play for ages. The difference classes and biomes feel like they each have distinct strengths and weaknesses, and the shop allows for fantastic and tense decision making each wave. Should you take a valuable upgrade now and risk losing lives to a wave? Can you afford to build additional defenses instead of building up your economy? At this point, I have finished a run on half of the classes on at least one of the maps, and I've just about 20 hours in. I don't plan on stopping any time soon. This feels like a cult classic. For TD genre heads, I think its a no brainer purchase. For people who aren't as into the genre, if you enjoy a difficult roguelike with short runs and a thoughtful decision space, I still think its worth a good hard look. Awesome. Absolute banger of a TD.

This game needs mod support. I beg the devs for mod support. This game could beat Inscryption with mod support. I have never played a game as elegantly concise with its mechanics as this before. It's CRAZY good. But if it had.... mod support..... it'd be turbo insanely good. I will do anything for mod support. Besides that though there are a number of more normal QoL issues that will probably be patched in in the future anyway. There's currently no way of zooming out or zooming in the camera. You can't do anything like drag a box to select more than one moveable object at a time. You can't select a specific type of object from offscreen (such as wanting to select a specific type of gnome that you know you have idle somewhere, but isn't currently on the screen) and there isn't anything like an encyclopaedia or tips section anywhere that you can use to see what the specific stat icons on each item means. The game is intuitive in a lot of ways but it took me a while to realize what the hourglass and stun icons meant, and in any case it would be really awesome to have a gallery that you could use to view all of your currently unlocked items like Balatro has. The base game itself is literally so awesome tho you have to play it lol. And of course... with mods... the already-considerable depth of the gameplay and units would explode through the roof.......

In the current GPU shortage, this game reminds me that fun can still be had on an i3 laptop. If black ops 6 is 102 GB then you could fit around 2550 Gnomes for each copy of BO6. How do you know if a video game is good? Custom built engine designed for the game Not using Unreal Engine Fair pricing No microtransactions Mobile port potential Is exactly what it says it is default background is black (OLED users be edging) Has unique soundtrack for each level that is memorable Every level is unique and presents new challenges Every level has new enemies and unique bosses with unique abilities Same pace from the beginning to the end (End game not rushed, for example) Extremely Optimized 40 megabytes Stable 120 FPS on integrated graphics Has random mode and endless mode for replay value What other game has most of these features? Slay the spire Binding of Isaac Enter the gungeon Spelunky Dead cells That's how you know you got a good game. The age of triple A is over.
