Pretty fun game but do not expect to 100% it. Very sweaty endgame. Going cross-eyed from planting 10,000 cactuses and then still not beating the level is what it looks like. Edit: Since this review is getting more attention I feel like I have to say this game is pretty awesome! Updated all the time, devs are pretty cool, custom engine, runs on a potato, and the vibes are chill (of course until endgame), Lots of strategies to try out. Absolutely worth a buy at full price and a missed opportunity on sale.

This is a very good tower defense game. I was hoping it was just like sunken defense... it's not, but that's okay. Roguelike elements require you to balance growing your economy and army at the same time. Sometimes you can feel a dud run coming, especially if you picked a starting class that might not great for the biome you picked. You can always restart/re-roll. Yes, you can control the path of your enemies.... but not in the same capacity you would funnel your enemies in sunken defense. Would recommend even at full price.

This game is a one of a kind roguelite/tower defense. At first, I didn't really understand how to utilize what was given to me in the shop. I also didn't know how to build a strong economy. After 58 hours (at the time of this review) I'm still learning new ways to get into 25+ rounds. The daily challenge is my favorite part, it's legit a puzzle you have to solve everyday to compete for a spot on the leaderboard. This game is a 10/10 in my book. Devs are active. Buy this game if you like roguelite/tower defense and give yourself time to learn how to play this masterpiece.

Several things that stand out and might help you decide on a purchase: 1. It feels like a complete game. I think it's finished enough that even if development were to halt today, it'd still be worth it. 2. A sign of good game design is when there's multiple good strategies for taking care of a problem. I found myself using multiple techniques and varieties of tools to play, and I managed to beat the game using a variety of them all. There's probably a META out there but I found the game challenging enough to be fun and frustrating. 3. You'll know whether or not you want to refund it in less than 2 hours, so don't worry. The game's tutorial is only a few minutes long, and it's not super complex. If you wanted a letter grade I'd give it a B, maybe a B+. It's pretty good.

Tl;dr: Gnomes is one of the best tower defense games that came out in the last few years. I should start by mentioning that you should not let the roguelike elements fool you if you are a classical tower defense player. The tactical aspects of traditional tower defense games regarding revenue and runway optimization are greatly implemented in Gnomes. It's not just a tower defense game with roguelike mechanics and mazing but a loyal one to older tower defense games in many aspects. In Gnomes, there are various maps and starting builds you can play the game with. Each map has its environmental conditions as well as restrictions, so they present different difficulties to overcome. Your aim is to match an appropriate starting build with these maps and handle them. Maps have unique bosses, so you need to deploy different strategies to be able to defeat them. When it comes to roguelike choices, I must say they are designed in a way that is well above average. You can get roguelike upgrades in Gnomes in two ways: as building choices and as trinkets. Building choices are pretty varied, and each trinket has an appropriate use in the game. I enjoyed both the variety of these choices as well as their designs. There is also an endless mode after you beat the final wave of each map. Monsters get stronger in the endless mode in quite a steep trend, so you must optimize each of your actions to be able to reach up to high waves. Each map lasts 15 waves, and I could only make it to the early 40s in the endless mode. It is quite a challenge for those who seek one. One not-so-great thing about Gnomes is the difficulty scaling of waves in levels. You get used to it after failing a few times, but still, it is frustrating at times. If you are a traditional tower defense player, you may be familiar with the idea of "optimize your revenue until you actually need to spend it," but in Gnomes, you actually need to spend your money regularly so you don't get immediately wiped out because of a sudden harsh wave difficulty increase. Your gnomes also get up to two additional levels as you defeat monsters with them, so it is important to deploy them in advance so they have more damage and attack speed for a future difficulty spike. There are also daily runs that I'm not interested in, but if you are looking for constantly updated challenges to overcome, it might be a nice addition for you. These random daily runs consist of a predetermined map and starting build, and you can compete with others for the leaderboard. Overall, Gnomes is a well-done tower defense game that I'm extremely happy to have played. If you are into tower defense games, you must not miss it!
