It has only recently come to my attention that some madman, a Russian modder independent from both Piranha Bytes and THQ Nordic, has been working behind the scenes to port the entirety of Gothic in Unreal Engine 5, motivated solely by mental illness and love for their favourite prison sim. This one-man remaster is available for no additional fee through the Betas tab, accessed by right-clicking the game in your library and selecting "Properties". It features a number of changes the modern gamer is sure to appreciate, such as: - Slightly prettier graphics; - Smoother animations; - A notable absence of bugs; - Physics that make sense (most of the time); - Proper mouse support; - A completely reworked UI; - Questionable localization choices. And to top it all off, more accessibility settings you can shake a pickaxe at. It's truly impressive work, and the one responsible for it deserves my praise. Really, they've done more in a few years for this series than all the developers and publishers have in its lifetime. All this to say: if you were ever interested in experiencing the magic of the colony for yourself, but were put off by the utterly Mesozoic control scheme and/or installation process, well, you no longer have an excuse.

Решил впервые попробовать Готику, в итоге сдох в самой первой луже в начале игры 👍 (как оказалось, задел триггер магического барьера). А если серьезно, "Лучше поздно, чем никогда!", этой фразой могу описать свой опыт знакомства с данной игрой. Да, нужно иметь в виду возраст игры, специфическое управление и т.п. нюансы, которые могут отталкивать при первом знакомстве, особенно если вы привыкли к казуальщине наподобие Скурима, где все лижут вам жопу и умереть можно разве что специально, а в Готике ты по настоящему чувствуешь прогрессию героя. Игра старая, известная, всё уже 1000 раз было сказано и все кто надо, уже давно попробовали данную игру, от себя могу лишь заключить, что Готика это старый самородок, который пусть и запылился от времени, но не перестал от этого быть настоящим сокровищем! В добавок игра многократно улучшается благодаря модам, спасибо великому Габену за Steam Workshop. Оценка игры: 9 смертей от шершня из 10!

I'm a huge fan of RPGs and heard good things about the Gothic series and the way it inspired the genre. The story, side quests, and dialogues are very unique and humorous. Gameplay and graphics can feel old at times, but they can become decent after installing various mods that can also ease up the tediousness of some actions. I enjoyed the different factions, armors and locations when roaming the game world and particularly the way you become more skilled as the game progresses. Gothic still feels very good in 2025. I'm glad I finally experienced it!

Turns out what they say is true: this is a great rpg. Very atmospheric, with an amazing open world (small but well designed) and many impressive systems like NPC schedules that work towards immersion. Progression from nobody to a powerful player is very satisfying and there is some non-linearity because of the vying factions. The story and setting are so good that I prefer Gothic 1 to its sequel, even though Gothic 2 is bigger and more fleshed out. Control scheme is somewhat unconventional, but not frustrating. I got used to it quickly and fought enemies with no problems.

I’m not going to sing this game praises. Because you’ll be hearing a lot about Gothic in the near future. If for whatever reason you are not prepared for infinite yellow pen pusher cohorts whose first substantial RPG at best was Oblivion yelling at you from every roof how innovative and unique Gothic was upon release (“but let’s face it: the combat system was abysmally clunky and in a desperate need for an upgrade” or something), better run naked into the desert, because the moneybags at THQ Nordic are financing a remake. Now, when it comes to remakes, there are three types of old games. Those that don’t need a remake. These get a ton of remakes and remasters. Those that don’t need a remake because they were good, but modern audiences won’t touch them on account of: unfamiliar control scheme/mandatory manual/unusual interface/old graphics. These only get a remaster once in a blue moon. And those that had an interesting groundwork going for them, but failed to reach their full potential usually due to development time restrictions, and are thus heavily in need of a new refinement to be the full game they were meant to be. These are avoided by the remake culture like the plague and can only hope for a chance dedicated modder to lay down their life for them. Guess where out of the three categories Gothic falls? This simulationist Escape from New York -inspired ARPG plays issueless today. A patch for bugs+compatibility and another one for graphics if you’re feeling hedonistic. Sure, there are things that could be more pronounced. The final stretch of the original is barebones and could use some better content than glorified fetch-questing. The faux-lovecraftian elements are possibly going to become substantially more vivid due to Nicolas Lietzau of Enderal fame taking the lead writer’s seat. Where a man strongly sentimentalist in writing style (talented as he may be) is going to take the stern laconic broad-stroke original plot, I do not know. Even the visuals are not a direct upgrade because the original took a great advantage of the blockiness pertaining to Y2K graphics. I’m not skeptical of the remake. I’ll probably even play it. The issue is, Gothic has already been remade. Seven times. Gothic 2 Gothic 3 Risen Risen 2 Risen 3 Elex Elex 2 Oh, what’s that you’re saying? Gothic 2 was superior? I agree. It was better at everything. Except for the atmosphere. And the style. And the thematic consistency. And the originality. A stronger bigger vision of a confident growing studio iterating on a good concept, broadening the appeal. Surely, this path shall take them to greatness. First one looked forward. Subsequent ones looked back.
