It turns out my NPC girlfriend was only pretending to be in love with me. She suddenly revealed it was a lie and that she "keeps her friends close and enemies closer." She then suplexed me. This game is crazy

If you don't know the joke, the joke is basically that MDickie once made a wrestling game and now every game he makes is a wrestling game. Game about Jesus? Wrestling game. Zombie survival? Wrestling game. School sim? Wrestling game. Prison sim? Wrestling game. They also still look straight out of the early 2000's, wherein they already looked janky and outdated, with a control scheme that was more out of the 1990's. And I guess that's just supposed to indefinitely remain a part of the charm. D-pad to move. A/S/Z/X/Spacebar/Tab for actions, P to pause. LMB+Mouse to move the camera, so you'd need three hands to use that, not that you'd want to with how the manual camera behaves. No rebinding. There is actually gamepad support now, which is scarcely better but does in fact function. A new mechanic added specifically for this game that will punch you straight in the face from the get-go is "impersonation", whereby if your customized character's outfit doesn't conform to the exact RGB values of the attire for your current cell block you will be arrested and penalized on an endless loop (if you aren't outright executed on the spot for it). Normally the default outfits will automatically change to the given colors anytime your block is reassigned, but depending on what you modify that behavior can easily be broken, and it's utterly clear as mud as to what causes that or what kinds of accessories or how many of them can be worn, with what colors, without tripping the impersonation offense. Given that most players will start stuck in the prisoner mode before unlocking the other modes, and that the game is themed around BEING a prisoner, this is an absolutely terrible and ill-conceived system that doesn't serve any real benefit. Other inmates will be penalized or apprehended for their behavior maybe 1% of the time, while you'll be put on trial for every other punch you throw, or get accused of terrorism when the gun you gently put down explodes in a fireball, or vandalism when someone reverse suplexes you through a table unprovoked. I was sentenced to be beaten up for the crime of cacking myself in public because I couldn't get to a toilet with literally 10 seconds of prior notice. Tips for how to play the game range from "always answer the phone" because it has a chance of getting your sentence reduced, to "never answer the phone" because it has an EQUAL chance of getting your sentence extended, and can also trigger random events like a bomb threat that results in a nigh unavoidable outcome that is guaranteed to kill you stone cold dead for no real reason. It looks terrible. It plays terrible. It sounds terrible. The stock SFX are the same imbalanced ear-grating cacophony of samples that were being used 20 years ago. The literally one music track the game has sounds like one of those auditory SCP's that you hear once and which plays on loop in your head for 10 days until you're suddenly sucked into the shadow realm -- and it mostly plays over the character editor, which you can spend a LOT of time in. Like basically every MDickie game, there isn't any single system that anyone in this day and age could point to and say, "That works really well!" And yet I'd recommend it. At least, for reasonably cheap, and if none of the above sounds specifically like a dealbreaker to you. Why? Because the MDickie universe is one in which the stories told by pro wrestling are not only real, they are the basis for the very fabric of reality. The games are absolutely greater than the sum of their parts; utter chaos simulators first and foremost, and you really have to avoid taking them too seriously as actual gameplay experiences. if you can embrace that chaos and live with the BS it throws at you, it can result in some sidesplitting hilarity. That said, between Hard Time 3, Old School, or Wrestling Empire (currently the most modern offerings), I'd recommend whichever one happens to most thematically tickle your fancy. Actually just playing as a wrestler seems somehow anticlimactic to me in comparison to a prison sim operating on wrestling logic, so here I am. Also if you're really struggling with the game and just want to unlock the editor, just make a musclehead character, minimize interaction, and work out with a barbell in the hospital, then sleep off the exhaustion. The hospital room is the one place where you aren't penalized for sleeping to restore health during the day. Do any favors asked of you by officers, as they can reduce your sentence. Alternatively, quit to the menu with Esc on a semi-regular basis to force quicksaving and then just Alt-F4 out immediately if your health depletes and the screen is fading to black rather than risk dying outright.
