March 2025
It is a fine game, but has a few major flaws; the first being broken achievements. In my 7 hours of playtime, I could only get 6 achievements, and the rest simply refused to unlock. This makes hundred percenting the game irrelevant. My other complaint comes from how the objective system works. Hundred percenting a level requires you to do two optional objectives. The problem is that the level design only allows you to complete one at a time, forcing you to play the same level twice, only in a slightly different manner. This made the game infinitely more boring for me, so much so that I stopped perfecting it altogether, making my experience much more enjoyable. Incentivising replayability can work for a mainline Hitman game, where tonnes of content is available to explore, keeping each replay fresh and interesting. But, forcing players to replay levels from a board game which is already so linear, was a step in the wrong direction. I think the worst type of objectives were "complete the game in x turn or less". They turned the experience into a slog. In addition to this, the game does not even show how many turn you have made in a level, making these challenges even more annoying. Providing this information would have turned them much more tolerable. The missions where you could complete all the objectives in one go were actually fun, and the entire game should have been like this. Coincidentally, these levels also did not contain that aforementioned "x turns or less" challenge. Another minor criticism I have is that you have to manually check the objectives in a level by going to the menu. I would have preferred if they were directly displayed on the screen, or at the beginning of each level. I know that the I sound extremely negative in my review. But, most of my problems are only relevant if you are looking forward to hundred percenting the game. If you do not care about that, it just "clicks", especially its sound effects. They add so much to the experience, and it would have been a somewhat of an inferior product if not for them. Every action is punctuated with so much weight, that you can almost forget for a moment that you are not actually killing people. The music too, while used sparingly, fits the tone of the experience.

Hitman GO was the first title in Square Enix Montreal’s GO trilogy, and what a great IP to start off this series of puzzle games! The patience and methodical approach that Hitman games require complement GO’s chess-like game mechanics perfectly. Although the GO format could not replicate the tension and occasional need for improvisation from the mainline Hitman games, it put its own spin on the strategizing gameplay. Thus, Hitman GO is more like an extension of the Hitman franchise, an entry that is unique and familiar at the same time. I used to play the Microsoft App Store version of Hitman GO on my Surface tablet often. It was the closest thing to a full-fledged Hitman game on a mobile device at the time. Although it has long since been delisted, I can still play it on my Windows desktop. Playing it recently made me realize how poorly the original graphics scale up on a desktop monitor. Hence, I decided to pick up Hitman GO: Definitive Edition. The “Definitive Edition” moniker signifies the game having improved graphics and all the bonus content that the mobile versions have. Are the visual improvements noticeable! The high-end board game aesthetics – sharp, clean and bright – are more appealing than ever. Agent 47 and the enemies are in the forms of molded game pieces; and each game piece type being visually distinctive contributes to Hitman GO’s chess or high-end board game art design. The eight types of enemies (e.g., single standing guards, patrolling guards, dogs, snipers) add variety and challenge to the 91 levels that spread across 7 episodes. Each level has its own set of mission objectives (e.g., no kills, X turns or fewer, collect briefcase), which when completed will earn players objective points for unlocking episodes of higher difficulty. At 7 episodes, 91 levels and over 200 objectives, Hitman GO is a challenging game with high replayability. There is certainly a lot of content for a game at its current price point. While I rave about Hitman GO’s simplistic but stimulating gameplay as well as its art direction, I find it somewhat annoying that the Definitive Edition adopted the mouse-click-and-drag control scheme that would eventually make its way to Lara Croft GO. This control scheme is slightly awkward, but not a deal breaker. It just irks me that the Microsoft App Store version supports touchscreen and keyboard controls, but the “Definitive Edition” doesn’t. Despite that one shortcoming, Hitman GO: Definitive Edition is a must-play for casual puzzle game fans and Hitman enthusiasts. Even if you have the original version like I, the fact that Definitive Edition is worth re-purchasing. After all, it’s essentially the mobile game but with improved graphics that look gorgeous on a desktop monitor and modern mobile PC gaming devices. So, whether it is on sale or sold at regular price, you should add this game to your collection.

Hitman Go: Definitive Edition is a clever turn-based strategy game that reimagines the classic Hitman formula in a board game style. You guide Agent 47 through beautifully crafted diorama levels, using stealth and strategy to eliminate targets and avoid enemies. The gameplay is engaging, focusing on planning your moves carefully. Each level is a puzzle, requiring you to think ahead to navigate guards and obstacles. The minimalist design and vibrant art style enhance the experience, making it visually appealing. While it’s a departure from the main series’ action, Hitman Go offers a unique and satisfying blend of strategy and stealth. The puzzles can be challenging but are rewarding to solve. It’s a great pick for fans of tactical games or anyone looking for a different take on the Hitman franchise. Perfect for short gaming sessions, it’s a refreshing experience that keeps you coming back for more!

At first glance, this game might seem similar to the Hitman series, but it is actually a turn-based puzzle game. This brilliant reimagining effectively captures the essence of the Hitman theme. 히트맨 퍼즐.
