The following review is for the full version of the game and not the censored one. Island SAGA is a nice RPGM game by Kamichichi, therefore, as usual, sees a female cast made up of a large group of damsels particularly gifted in the mammary department. The game also boasts a fair number of peculiarities that distinguish it, for better or for worse, from other titles of the genre, in fact it does not make use of a system of levels and experience, but rather a progression systme like Final Fantasy II, where our decisions in battle determine the evolution of the characters. The frequent use of the various types of weapons, spells and party formations will determine how much a character will rank up in a certain skill, as well as the use will increase the rank of formations in battle. In addition, the spells must be learned, free of charge, in the relative shop and are mutually exclusive by element, so that each character can only learn three families of them, additionally there is also the possibility of randomly carrying out combined attacks. Another peculiarity is the impossibility of accessing the "Objects" command in battle, in fact these must be equipped individually as if they were weapons in the appropriate menu, at least until the backpack is found. In fact, the characters can equip more than one weapon at a time and in battle they will be able to choose which one to attack with, also for this reason, the combat interface is a bit chaotic at first glance. Even the progression of the story is quite unusual, it is in fact divided into quests, 40 plus 10 additional (then there is the New Game Plus, useful if you want to face one of the highest difficulty levels among the 5 available), but not every quest is necessary for the continuation of the narrative. Talk to the cat outside the guild having the girls in the group ("The cat talked!") can help to "correct" ("Where should we go?") any previously made wrong choices, which can prevent the appearance of subsequent quests, or to change the difficulty of the game. In addition, even the monsters of the random encounters, shown here on the map like in Chrono Trigger, evolve with the growth of our characters, therefore, being at high "levels" can easily lead to more harder random encounters than the bosses, who instead have fixed statistics. Therefore, a certain balance between story progression and grinding will need to be considered. The story is very simple, we are a prince who is tasked with finding the artifact of true love to save our parents' kingdom and marriage, a feat in which we will be accompanied by the four buxom princesses of neighboring kingdoms, all intending to marry us. We will therefore take up residence in the city of Eldia on the island of Valentine and the adventure begins, during which there will be some intimate moments with the girls, in scenes beautifully drawn and animated by hand. Also, if only some expressions during the game are dubbed, the steamy scenes are fully dubbed. In addition, during the New Game Plus, it will be possible, by equipping a certain accessory, to remove the clothes from the sprites of the girls, and, by changing the party leader with "W", we will be able to walk around with our favorite heroine naked. Island SAGA è un simpatico RGP della Kamichichi, pertanto, come di consueto, vede un cast femminile composto da una nutrita schiera di donzelle particolarmente dotate nel reparto mammario. Il gioco vanta anche una discreta serie di particolarità che lo distinguono, nel bene o nel male, da altri titolo del genere, infatti non si avvale di un sistema di livelli e di esperienza, ma piuttosto di una progressione alla Final Fantasy II, dove saranno le nostre decisioni in battaglia a determinare l'evoluzione dei nostri personaggi. Saranno l'uso frequente delle varie tipologie di armi, delle magie e delle formazioni del party, a determinare quanto un personaggio salirà di grado in una determinata abilità, così come l'uso aumenterà il grado delle formazioni in battaglia. In aggiunta, le magie vanno imparate, gratuitamente, nel relativo negozio e sono mutualmente esclusive per elemento, sicché ogni personaggio potrà impararne solo di tre, non manca altresì la possibilità di effettuare, in maniera abbastanza casuale, attacchi combinati. Altra peculiarità è l'impossibilità di accedere al comando "Oggetti" in battaglia, questi infatti dovranno essere equipaggiati singolarmente come fossero armi nell'apposito menu, almeno fino al ritrovamento dello Zaino (oggetto "Backpack"). Infatti i personaggi possono equipaggiare più di un'arma alla volta e in battaglia potranno scegliere con quale attaccare, anche per questo, l'interfaccia di combattimento risulta un po' caotica ad una prima occhiata. Anche la progressione della storia è abbastanza inusuale, essa è infatti suddivisa in quest, 40 più 10 aggiuntive (poi c'è il New Game Plus, utile se si vuole affrontare uno dei livelli di difficoltà più alti tra i 5 disponibili), non tutte, però, sono necessarie per il prosieguo della narrazione. Parlare con il gatto fuori dalla gilda avendo le ragazze nel gruppo ("The cat talked!") può aiutare a "correggere" ("Where should we go?") eventuali scelte sbagliate fatte in precedenza, che possono impedire la comparsa di quest successive, o a cambiare la difficoltà di gioco. In più, anche i mostri degli incontri casuali, qui segnalati sulla mappa alla Chrono Trigger, evolvono col crescere dei nostri personaggi, pertanto, trovarsi a "livelli" alti può facilmente condurre ad incontri casuali più impegnativi dei boss, i quali invece hanno statistiche fisse. Pertanto bisognerà considerare un certo bilanciamento tra progressione nella storia e grinding. La storia è molto semplice, noi siamo un principe che viene incaricato di trovare l'artefatto del vero amore per salvare regno e matrimonio dei nostri genitori, impresa nella quale verremo accompagnati dalle quattro formose principesse dei regni vicini, tutte intenzionate a sposarci. Prenderemo dunque casa nella città di Eldia sull'isola di Valentine e l'avventura inizia, nel corso della quale non mancheranno un po' di momenti intimi con le ragazze, egregiamente disegnati e animati a mano. Inoltre, se solo alcune espressioni durante il gioco sono doppiate, le scene piccanti sono invece lo sono completamente. In più, durante il New Game Plus, sarà possibile rimuovere i vestiti dagli sprite delle ragazze e, cambiando il party leader con "W", si potrà andare in giro con la nostra eroina preferita come mamma l'ha fatta. There are eight reasons why this is my favorite game on this account.... 1 Light-hearted plot with a good cast of characters 2 On higher difficulties you do need to create strategies for combating the higher-level monsters 3 The job system based on weapon experience is an enjoyable novelty of the game 4 it’s a well animated game with a mostly full audio for the main 4 characters that I find more often than not I revisit for the... 5. ehhh this joke is getting played out you all know the real eight reasons 1-8 boobah Ultimately if you're into impressive peaks and valleys with your cup of mostly vanilla eroge this is the game for you if not then move along.
Thumbs up. Games published by Remtairy don't disappoint, and Island SAGA is no exception. Both gameplay and H-wise, it's excelent. The RPG job-like system and character growth mechanics stand out among other games of the genre since the characters don't have levels, only their stats increase according to the weapon/magic (job) they use the most, and every character can use any of them, so can customize your party pretty much however you like. The H is great, the character design, animated scenes with VA and overall art, top-of-the-line. Supposedly the game is about 10-12 hours long, but all the quests and character growth make it a lot longer.
TL;DR You'd be a dummy to pass up on this. Good-hearted adventure JRPG with a hefty quest system, good characters, and good turn-based combat. Content Warnings: Uncensored patch needed for all of this: Public sex, exhibitionism (yes, they're different), breast worship, nipple play (you need only glance at the art to understand the emphasis), ahegao, watersports (briefly), naked apron, pole dancing (...sort of), tentacles (brief), slime (brief), vanilla (vastly), big breasts (OBVIOUSLY). So the original short review said the following: "All the developers had to say was 'We're hijacking the SaGa Frontier System.' That's it. That sells the game." That holds up damned well. For those not initiated, we'll get to it as I hammer out this game's strong points. 1. Story. It's a harem adventure. You are the errant prince of a crown that is angling for a more permanent alliance with its neighboring kingdoms. But with your rambunctious, "who cares about the crown" manner, your father decides its high time to curb that rebellious attitude and immediately weaves a plan that sends you and four other kingdoms' princesses searching for a MacGuffin, all while The Bachelor music plays in the background. You're all shipped to an island steeped in the world's old lore at tasked to become true adventurers, and to bring home the MacGuffin, and also a wife & future queen from the four girls. You are also, as is common in such games, the Silent Protagonist™, limited to choices on certain scenes as a means of expression. The girls more than make up for it, as each is charming, ambitious, passionate, and endearing in their own way as they vie for your blank-faced affection, all while answering the not-so-new hankering for open and free adventure outside their castles' walls. The chain of subplots that encompass the quests are all basic, but still hit the right notes to ensure you're having a good time, no matter your own pacing in the game progression. The girls carry their weight across the expanding story, in the steamy scenes, and in the battle system. It's not a wowzers kind of epic thumbed from the fingers of the long-passed Charles Dickens, but if you have the adventure itch and the harem itch, they get the job done just fine. 2. Game Mechanics. This is the Romancing SaGa system—or to be specific, this game takes it JRPG cues straight from PSX's SaGa Frontier. For the uninitiated, I'll take the sidebar to tell you Square-Enix is rereleasing SaGa Frontier in a Director's Cut format, with additional storyline and even a previously-cut route protagonist this spring, and to GET THE GAME (srsly it's an amazing piece of work). To short-hand the game's system as best I can, you do not level up traditionally, but instead get random stat increases post battle (HP, MP, INT, WILL, STR, etc etc etc). Learning skills will come to your characters during battle from using various weapons, with some skills opening specific chains of more powerful skills. As well, the enemies scale based on your main character's HP, meaning the challenge can easily beat down your front door if you're not focused on earning skills or magic. Island Saga borrow this to lesser effect. Skills work as stated, as do stat gains and weapon/element affinity (how hard you can hit with your weapon/magic attack. This is a system right at home for me, as it incentivizes use in various schools of attack and to not overlook buff or special techniques that can easily turn the tide of a tough battle. And this is an indie style game without that pro veneer polish, so quite frankly if one wishes, they can easily overpower the crop of enemies with enough grit, planning, or just by lucking on high-end loot early game (happens more than you think). You're never hopelessly outmatched so long as your wits are about you and you're exploring the maps proper. 3. The porn. I will be the first to say I am not a super duper fan of big boobed heroine types. Not out of dislike, but just because it's a vanilla flavor I"ve had one-too-many times. But imagine my shock when I find myself loving this all with little issue. Exaggerated for comedy, but charming. The art's bloody gorgeous, and the animation style looping and camera work is an open relief to many tried and tread VN techniques. Island Saga doesn't really reinvent the wheel, here, but you won't be bored by the juicy bits you get to. I'd be remiss to not poke a critique at something the designers & devs could've fixed. To sum, magic in the game is inferior to physical attacks. The unbalance, even when you put effort evenly into both, is stark. This isn't to say magic is ineffective—far from it. But you will struggle to care about low damage spells early on, and probably not give it any second chance at all unless you're either forced to (Sophie is the natural mage & healer in the group and that's needed for enemy AOE spells—Protip: Dark Magic affinity IMMEDIATELY for the only AOE healing magic), you're trophy hunting, or you're as stubborn as I was to see what does and does not work in the game. It's a real shame to see a sizeable fraction of the battle system be outshined by its physical opposite so easily. I hope they won't do that in the future. That said, this is a solid title through & through. Pick it up, sale or no. You won't regret it.
Gameplay: Difficulty jumps drastically at times but that's just JRPG in general, system is good enough to not bore you 8/10 Story: Typical fantasy stuff, decent volume of contents. Around 8-10 hours of playtime to full clear on slightly easier difficulty. 9/10 H-scene: Good amount of high quality, uncensored animated scene. Also has built-in "manual mode" for practical use which is nice. The arts are really well done 11/10 Total: 9/10 Highly recommended. One of the best fantasy eroge I've played.
