Payphone Miami Jackal is a game that can be best summarized as 'what if John Wick, Hotline Miami, and Scarface had a baby, then raised it on Egyptian literature?'. STORY The plot of Jackal is a lot akin to Hotline Miami 1 - and I specifically say 1. It's loose, a stream-of-conscience style of storytelling, about a hitman on drugs, performing ultraviolent hits and indulging in vices, all while Anubis judges him for his every deed akin to an annoyed, divine chaperone. The presentation is a series of vignettes and still shots, interspersed with the subtitles in fittingly shaky, wobbling typography, the very nature of it all leaving so much up in the air - only unlike Hotline Miami, there's no screwdriver, no given timeline, no real way to piece all of it together. What I'm saying is that it's there, but like a 70s porno, it's there to facilitate getting into the action, easy to disregard if gameplay's all you're here for, and ultimately may not matter that much. GAMEPLAY Again, it's a lot like Hotline Miami. Your end goal is simple - Kill everyone that moves, isn't you or Anubis, and get out. The difference between Jackal and Hotline Miami is that instead of different masks, you utilize different powers, unlocked via finishing off downed opponents, giving you an incentive to stick to unarmed combat where possible for new playstyles, and instead of your powers being passive, quite a few of them are active abilities used to get you through a tight situation without getting taken down. Your finishers also make you immune to damage for a short moment and, most importantly, grant you a speed boost, encouraging you to chain these together and get aggressive rather than hunker down in a corner. Another key difference is that the hitman can actually take a modicum of abuse before kicking the bucket - which might be needed. Jackal, for reasons I can't fully pin down, doesn't feel as tight as Hotline Miami, and I suspect that's due to the level layouts and enemy placement in particular being seeded rather than handcrafted. The tight controls of Hotline feel a little less controlled, the handling a little less refined. Additionally, Jackal also likes to sic reinforcements on you, which can come as a shock, but quickly becomes repetitive - Buildings turn into clown cars as enemies spawn in offscreen, the only warning the game giving you being a quick text popup front and center, which when coupled with the looser feel and lack of checkpoints can make the game's difficulty occasionally turn into frustration, and again, not in the Hotline Miami style where the game's just brutal like that - It's due to circumstances you're not entirely aware of or in control over. For all my frustrations and nitpicks, one thing Jackal does well is give you agility and options. The environment itself is a weapon. You can chain finishers, zipping from enemy to enemy like a murderous, ♥♥♥♥♥-up hamster - Which admittedly isn't too far off the mark - and when the game's flow hits just right, it hits . GRAPHICS and AUDIO Jackal's overall aesthetic can best be described as somewhere between late PS1-era graphics for the characters and most of the environment, meeting the 1970s, and then going out for drinks with the PS3 for the copious amount of blood splatter. Of course, for anyone else familiar with Transhuman Design's earlier works, especially I Am Your Beast and Maniac, this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise - it seems they've settled into this style. But it's arrived with some added 70s flair - It's in the prop design, the fonts, and the music. Speaking of, the music. It's usually fast-paced, and when it isn't, it's tense, as if the very band is bracing for the inevitable carnage to follow in your wake. It's not licensed works a la Hotline Miami, either, it's all original music that, while maybe a little out of place for the 70s, does it's job, adding to your chaotic, frantic dance with death itself. The voice acting is also solid, though most of it has to do with the contrast between the hitman and Anubis, the wisecracking joker and the ever-stoic, ever-serious god of death, and the fact we're in the former's head, with him providing all the narration. VERDICT Jackal is one of those games, the ones I leave with mixed results and even more confused thoughts. It's frustrating, and I question a couple of it's design choices, but it's fun when the game's going your way. It shamelessly wears it's inspirations like a fake gold chain and cheap flashy wristwatch, but it's got a style all it's own regardless. It's art style isn't anything new for Transhuman Design, but it still pulls the low-poly look off with no small amount of grace. It's not a game I'd advise for full price unless you're desperately craving your next hit of Hotline Miami-alike titles, but if you can find it on the cheap sometime, give Jackal a look. If nothing else, it's one hell of a trip.
