Clearly, those who write bad reviews did not play pre-steam Dwarf Fortress. Or Lemmings. Yeah, your minions are dumb, and you got to hand-hold them in delicate situations. And yes, a game with many interacting mechanics can take disturbingly weird directions. And yes, sometimes there are bugs. Having played Angband, ADOM, Dwarf Fortress, Gnomoria, etc, I still think this is a solid game for those who want to enjoy the genre without investing months into masochistic gameplay.

Like dwarf fortress but just digging, base building, and raids. While not a deep experience, still every bit as satisfying in the afore-mentioned regards.

7/10 - feels unrefined but good Pros: + great minion map navigation + the runs are very short for a colony management that has average of 4 hours(it is replayable) + lets you enslave your enemies and make them kill there friends + makes your main minion to be strong as heck + allows you to fight other player's and your previous base + very simple game + the combat maybe simple but you can implement certain strategies that allow you to fight a slightly stronger opponent Cons: + the game difficulty suddenly becomes easier if you acquire adamantium level equipment + only a few minion gets overpowered while the remaining are stuck at the same level + if one of the few minion dies, some runs will get softlocked as the sources of overpowering this minions are non-renewable + the game gets laggy as more minions there are and the deeper z-levels you go to acquire adamantium level equipment + personnel quarters system limits the amount of stronger minions you can get + the minions that you had in the beginning gets outpowered by the enemies you can recruit in the late game (imo cuz the investment i put in that certain minion gets wasted if i can just recruit stronger ones outside of my base) + your keeper(the main character) is not worth leveling up as the enemies starts outleveling you + traits that are supposed to make minions unique are lackluster or straight up detriment + there is no balance for attacking other bases and building your base's defenses(it is more rewarding to attack others than building your own base) + lacks decorative items as a player you can improve certain aspects of the game by downloading the steam workshop mods Suggestion to the developers: + if the z-levels are permanent, make it more worth while to have(have more variety of resources and yields more resources while putting challenges such as enemies invading your underground) or make a renewable and temporary z-levels + balance team leader's experience with the minions by sharing exp to the whole team rather than a single minion(this method already exist as leadership ring is in the game, just make it more accessible in the earlier games) + keeper being underpowered, make a way for your keeper to start scaling against overleveled enemies(ex: if you defeat the enemy team leader, it rewards you a special item that can make you or your minion stronger)

Any fan of the Dwarf Fortress, Rimworld, or Dungeon Keeper owes it to themselves to play this game. Bonus points for being one of the most moddable games on the market! Dig out your dungeon, repel invaders, find treasure, and take good care of your champion creatures to take control. Lots of replayability, and a very unique mechanic that allows you to set your own dungeon as an adversary for future playthroughs (or download other players' dungeons). Perfect for laptops and steam decks.

In terms of graphics and presentation, Dwarf Fortress could learn a thing or two from KeeperRL. One of the most important differences, is that creatures have simple but yet very effective animations, that succesfuly convey their current action just by visual feedback alone. In dwarf fortress, creatures' sprites are always inanimate and you can't, in a glance, tell the difference between a dwarf digging a hole, to a dancing one, or one that is using a cooking station. In KeeperRL every action has a very simple wobble animation, nothing fancy, but it adds so much and makes the creatures look alive. Your minions will even start dancing in groups when they're chilling in their tavern! Also their movement from tile to tile is smoothed out and looks natural, in comparison to DF where the srpites just teleport around. Another major improvement over Dwarf Fortress is the combat, units have actual mass and they don't stack on top of each other (except mounts, yes KeeperRL has mounts!). You can form combat lines and hold choke points, denying the enemy advancing, or keep your Keeper safe behind a wall of meat, your loyal and very expendable minions. That alone makes the combat a hundred times better than in DF, where you can't tell what the hell is going on unless you open a wall of text and even then you have to click through the numerous sprites that are stacked in a single tile. KeeperRL has simple combat animations, so you can tell just by looking at the sprites how the combat is going and which units are engaged. The third major difference is that KeeperRL has a lightning system and fog of war. There's a day and night cycle, you can add torches and candelabras to light up the dark corners of your dungeon. When you dig down, it actually feels like you're poking your head in the black depths below (it's really dark down there!), and you can bring light to that abyss, it's such an important core feeling that Dwarf Fortress unfortunately is lacking at the moment, every level has the same, brightly lit environment, everything is visible all the time. Again KeeperRl's lightning system is nothing fancy, it's simple but it is effective and adds so much texture to the 2D sprites that would otherwise look boring and repeating, like in DF. Enough of what I wish DF would be though, KeeperRL's game loop is very fun and engaging, building your evil forces up, exploring the surroundings, killing, pillaging, capturing, torturing, for a dungeon keeper game it is extremely fun and hits the right spot. There are a few exceptions of tedious and mindboggling micromanaging though, more specifically, minion personal quarters and item managing systems (especially the forge), being very poorly designed and require way too many clicks and time to complete. This constant micromanage was taking me out of the otherwise fun loop, way to often and I wish the dev would add a simpler way to quickly build rooms, like a blueprint system, and add a Rimworld style job order to manage our ever growing pile of loot, (always keep X amount of admantium swords, smelt the rest for example, etc). But other than those issues, the game offers a very good Dungeon Keeper experience, with lots of playstyle options to choose from, from a classic evil mage, to a necromancer focused on undead minions, or an evil knight that can take the whole world by themselves, you can even play as the "good" guys (knights, dwarfs), and of course you can play the game in a pure roguelite fashion, going in as an adventurer. Combat is fun, there are many enemies to discover and conquer and If you manage to be victorious your dungeon and your keeper can even be encountered in other players' future runs, that's a very cool feature indeed. Mods are also a thing, which is always a huge plus in my book, KeeperRL is my new favourite Dungeon Keeper for sure!
