KeeperRL is one of those rare gems that takes a classic concept — building an evil dungeon, commanding minions, and conquering the overworld — and elevates it with incredible depth, charm, and freedom. If you're into Dungeon Keeper, Dwarf Fortress, or RimWorld, this game feels like all three had a wonderfully chaotic baby. Deep, Satisfying Base-Building The heart of KeeperRL is designing your underground lair from scratch. You dig out caverns, carve polished hallways, set traps, build libraries and workshops, and watch your minions bring your sinister vision to life. The building tools are intuitive, flexible, and reward creativity — whether you want a functional murder-fortress or a stylish subterranean city. A Surprisingly Smart Simulation Every creature has needs, skills, schedules, moods, and combat tendencies. Goblins train, imps haul resources, succubi charm enemies, vampires brood until nightfall… it all feels alive. The simulation is light enough to learn quickly but deep enough to create memorable stories. Tactical, Hands-On Combat Unlike many management sims, KeeperRL lets you take direct control of your minions. You can lead raids yourself — casting spells, smashing enemies, and looting rival keepers. The combination of turn-based tactical combat and squad-based raiding makes every expedition tense and rewarding. Roguelike Density With Sandbox Freedom The procedural generation in KeeperRL keeps every world fresh. No two maps or factions feel the same, and the constant variety makes each run tell its own emergent story. You’re always adapting, optimising, or scrambling for survival. Massive Variety of Minions & Enemies Beasts, undead, demons, orcs, living armors, mages, cultists — you name it. Each creature type excels at specific roles, enabling countless strategies for defending your lair or steamrolling the overworld. Recruiting rare legendary creatures is a special thrill. Meaningful Player Choice Do you play as a dark sorcerer raising undead? A mountain tribe building a war-camp? Or the experimental Adventurer mode, where you explore the world as a lone hero? Every playstyle feels radically different and opens new strategies (and disasters to cause). Constantly Updated The developer is passionate and active, pushing out meaningful updates with new content, balance tweaks, and performance improvements. It feels like a living project with a bright future. Verdict: KeeperRL is one of the most unique and rewarding dungeon-management roguelikes ever created. It’s deep without being overwhelming, chaotic in the best way, and endlessly replayable thanks to emergent storytelling and constant updates. If you’re even remotely into strategy, sims, roguelikes, or evil lair fantasies… Buy it. You’ll lose days to it — and enjoy every minute.

Early access release was in 2015, at the time of writing it is 2025. A decade of free updates. Maybe you like the game, maybe you don't, but one thing you'll never have to worry about is the developer ever abandoning this game.

Clearly, those who write bad reviews did not play pre-steam Dwarf Fortress. Or Lemmings. Yeah, your minions are dumb, and you got to hand-hold them in delicate situations. And yes, a game with many interacting mechanics can take disturbingly weird directions. And yes, sometimes there are bugs. Having played Angband, ADOM, Dwarf Fortress, Gnomoria, etc, I still think this is a solid game for those who want to enjoy the genre without investing months into masochistic gameplay.

Like dwarf fortress but just digging, base building, and raids. While not a deep experience, still every bit as satisfying in the afore-mentioned regards.

7/10 - feels unrefined but good Pros: + great minion map navigation + the runs are very short for a colony management that has average of 4 hours(it is replayable) + lets you enslave your enemies and make them kill there friends + makes your main minion to be strong as heck + allows you to fight other player's and your previous base + very simple game + the combat maybe simple but you can implement certain strategies that allow you to fight a slightly stronger opponent Cons: + the game difficulty suddenly becomes easier if you acquire adamantium level equipment + only a few minion gets overpowered while the remaining are stuck at the same level + if one of the few minion dies, some runs will get softlocked as the sources of overpowering this minions are non-renewable + the game gets laggy as more minions there are and the deeper z-levels you go to acquire adamantium level equipment + personnel quarters system limits the amount of stronger minions you can get + the minions that you had in the beginning gets outpowered by the enemies you can recruit in the late game (imo cuz the investment i put in that certain minion gets wasted if i can just recruit stronger ones outside of my base) + your keeper(the main character) is not worth leveling up as the enemies starts outleveling you + traits that are supposed to make minions unique are lackluster or straight up detriment + there is no balance for attacking other bases and building your base's defenses(it is more rewarding to attack others than building your own base) + lacks decorative items as a player you can improve certain aspects of the game by downloading the steam workshop mods Suggestion to the developers: + if the z-levels are permanent, make it more worth while to have(have more variety of resources and yields more resources while putting challenges such as enemies invading your underground) or make a renewable and temporary z-levels + balance team leader's experience with the minions by sharing exp to the whole team rather than a single minion(this method already exist as leadership ring is in the game, just make it more accessible in the earlier games) + keeper being underpowered, make a way for your keeper to start scaling against overleveled enemies(ex: if you defeat the enemy team leader, it rewards you a special item that can make you or your minion stronger)
