Initially found out that this game existed from a Minecraft weather mod video. Intrigued, I looked more and found out there was a free demo on Steam. After playing the demo I was sceptical of how much value I'd get out of buying the full game. I'm generally pretty frugal, especially when it comes to virtual purchases of games. I had the money though, and I decided to play for 2 hours then refund if I didn't enjoy it. What a great decision that was. I can say without doubt that this was the best game I played in all of 2024. The soundtrack is insanely good and adds so much energy to the game play. The first time I started a race on Anemoi Station my ears were blessed, I wanted more; and I got way more than I thought I would. Music is a very important part of my life and experiencing emotions, so the amazing collections of songs was a large part of my liking for the game. Out of the two main game play types, races and boss fights, I found myself enjoying the latter immensely. I'm a big fan of bullet-hell and this game scratches my itch for it very well. The races were very good as well, since even though I generally do not enjoy speed running games, I would still repeat a course several times to get the best time I could. The music was a big part of my motivation to play those races, it's such a great vibe. The story and aesthetic of Kitten Burst provide such a unique and personal experience for me. All the little references to the internet of older times amalgamated with much more recent internet stuff, media other than text being displayed in the text box for jokes, even the characters speaking in unique text formats really gives a feeling of depth and personality to everything. Some of the characters speak using common internet acronyms and leetspeak, and when they stop doing so and speak more grammatically correct, it's like they're dropping the act of their character to speak more genuinely. I also love how clueless and wholesome Hapi is (he's just a lil guy :3). I feel like I'm rambling but I don't really know how to structure this hehe. I just finished 100%'ing the game and it took 14.5 hours. I took my time to enjoy the game and did many races multiple times and many boss fights on all the speeds. For the value of just playtime alone, this game is reasonable for it's price. Put on top of that all the previous things I've mentioned and this game becomes a must buy if you think it seems interesting. In terms of problems I had with the game, there were pretty much none. I've heard people on lower spec systems have some issues running the game as it might not be insanely well optimised, but I didn't run into any myself. The controls feel responsive and speedy, and playing with a controller is highly recommended. I found some difficulty understanding the perspective of the boss fights initially, but with more time I understood it and it feels amazing, although the fight with Nightmare seems kinda slow to turn left and right when rotating around the central column as compared to the speed you go up and down, which feels a bit yucky to me but not terrible. Honestly it's become one of my favourite games, probably within my top 5 of all the single player games I've ever played. I am so appreciative to James and everyone else who helped make this game. Kitten Burst genuinely has been one of the greatest gaming experiences I have had within the last 5 years and I feel connected to it on a deep, personal level. Thank you for making it, and GLHF!

A really enjoyable racing/bullet hell game that uses its unique early 2000's internet setting and style for creative level/character design and a surprisingly engaging and heartfelt story. The soundtrack is great and has a lot of variety in terms of both genre and tone, I particularly enjoyed the museum level race theme, Rip My Heart, Shiver, Burning Bright, Traveller and both of the ending themes. The character progression feels impactful, the whiskers/uberboost ability is a really well executed risk vs reward mechanic, and the game is filled with a lot of fun secrets and extras. The visuals fit the aesthetic perfectly and the talk sprite art is phenomenal. There's a bit of jank in a few places and it will definitely not resonate with some people, but I personally loved it!

I didn't play all that many new releases this year due to a crippling addiction to a JRPG series not for sale on Steam, but of those that caught my eye and got a playthrough out of me Kitten Burst absolutely clears the rest. It's an incredibly sincere elegy for a dead internet- painted with Y2K aesthetic and scored with bumping techno beats, complete with winamp visualizations. Despite all the characters more or less being stereotypical Internet archetypes they all feel like they come from a legitimate place, and their concerns of a homogenized and corporate Internet obviously very warranted in the current climate of 2024. The game offers a glimmer of hope, beyond just the narrative, in being one of the most unique and charming games to come out in a year otherwise dominated by sequels, remakes, and cash-ins on existing IPs.

This game is amazing. I mean, it's not just good, it's different! If you were internet aware in the 90s, 2000s and early 2010s, this is a treat! Firstly : CAT! That flies! In cyberspace! Secondly : Varied amazing music, half of the time it's screenshot worthy, gameplay, mechanics, and ideas that are fresh and feel unique. All packaged in with memes and internet silliness. Thirdly : It has a vibe, something that stands out from the crowd Honestly though, I just may be biased, it tickles my nostalgia bone and I'm a sucker for works that have passion put in them, even if they have rough edges. The kitty can be hard to control, especially at first, and I could see the simplistic but yet hard-ish to master gameplay to turn some people off. Also the artsyle can be a bit... much to navigate in 3D. I'm not even done playing it and I'm rating it one of the best games I've played this year
