Sept. 2025
Kuroinu Redux, developed by Liquid and published by Shiravune, is a dark fantasy visual novel that explores themes of betrayal, conquest, and power struggles within a richly detailed, high-fantasy world. The story centers around Vult, a mercenary commander who shockingly turns against the Seven Shields Alliance, his former comrades, and aligns himself with the enigmatic dark-elven Queen Olga. This act of treason sets off a chain of events that lead to the subjugation of the continent of Eos, where Vult establishes a new order known as the "Service Nation," forcing those defeated into servitude. The narrative unfolds through interactions with a broad cast of characters, each adding layers of complexity to the tale of domination and moral ambiguity. As a visual novel, Kuroinu Redux places a strong emphasis on storytelling and character development. The gameplay consists primarily of reading through carefully crafted dialogue and narrative sequences, with occasional choices that influence the flow of the story. The experience is further enriched by fully voiced Japanese dialogue, which helps bring emotional depth to the characters and heightens immersion in the game’s grim atmosphere. However, it’s important to highlight that the version available on Steam is censored to meet platform guidelines, meaning much of the explicit content present in the original game has been removed or altered. This has been a point of contention within the community, as many players seek the full uncensored experience through external patches, raising questions about accessibility and how the story’s darker elements are conveyed. Visually, Kuroinu Redux stands out for its detailed character art and atmospheric backgrounds that vividly portray the world of Eos. The character designs are intricate, reflecting the diverse personalities and roles within the story, while the settings evoke the mood of a dark and tumultuous fantasy realm. The art direction complements the narrative’s serious and sometimes brutal tone, providing a fitting backdrop to the unfolding drama. The soundtrack and sound design play equally important roles, with music that underscores the tension, emotional conflict, and grandeur of the story, enriching the overall experience. Reception of Kuroinu Redux has been mixed but generally positive. On Steam, the game holds a “Mostly Positive” rating, with many players appreciating the depth of its storytelling and the complexity of its characters. The moral dilemmas and political intrigue woven throughout the narrative have been praised for adding nuance and weight to what might otherwise be a straightforward tale of conquest. Yet, some criticism has been directed toward the censorship of explicit content in the Steam release, which many feel diminishes the impact of certain storylines and character arcs. Additionally, there have been complaints regarding the English translation, with some players noting inconsistencies and errors that occasionally disrupt immersion and clarity. In summary, Kuroinu Redux offers a compelling and darkly immersive experience for fans of narrative-driven visual novels, especially those who appreciate morally complex stories set in richly imagined fantasy worlds. While the game’s artistic and storytelling strengths are evident, potential players should be aware of the limitations imposed by censorship and translation issues in the official release. For those willing to explore beyond these challenges, particularly by seeking out uncensored content through external means, Kuroinu Redux presents a layered and provocative narrative that delves into themes of loyalty, power, and subjugation with unflinching boldness. Developers — we need a TRUE HAPPY END! We need a continuation of these heroines’ stories with a proper, hopeful ending!!! In 2025 this cannot be the way it all ends. (My review is marked as “positive” only because of my love for the characters - Olga Discordia and Celestine Lucross - and my respect for them in the anime and manga.) Kuroinu is the darkest, most distressing and heart-wrenching visual novel I have ever played. Even compared to the anime or the manga, this is something else entirely — and not in a good way. Although I expected a compelling story with romance and adult drama, I found myself dragged through a merciless journey of despair and tragedy. This is a world many admire for its unforgettable and stunning characters — the elf queens Olga Discordia and Celestine Lucross — and yet so many hate the experience it delivers: emptiness, weight, an abyss of helplessness and mourning. That is exactly why this franchise needs a continuation with a real happy ending, a future for these women. At first I bought this game because I loved the world, the characters, and above all Olga Discordia and Celestine Lucross, as they were shown in the anime and manga, over a decade ago. I expected a blend of romance, passion, and drama. Instead, I found myself staring at the screen in shock, with trembling hands and a heavy weight on my chest. How far must you push a proud dark-elf queen like Olga that she chooses to erase her own memories just to survive the endless humiliation? Think about it: a woman who once ruled with power and grace — the kind of heroine you should carry in your arms — having lost much of her magic, uses the last remnants of her once-mighty power to erase her own consciousness, choosing to destroy her past so she does not lose her sanity, becoming nothing but a plaything. That’s not just tragedy — that’s cruelty. The way Olga and Celestine’s story unfolds in this “canon” version of the game leaves me emotionally drained, disappointed, and deeply saddened — these are characters I have been attached to for so many years. It becomes unbearable to watch as their spirit, faith, and hope slowly collapse. These women did not deserve such a fate. I felt sick, restless, and unable to sleep. Even at work I could not stop thinking about them — my beloved elf heroines, trapped in this nightmare. I bought this game to enjoy romantic and erotic moments with these beautiful, cherished elf girls, not to lie awake in a cold sweat, heart racing, watching horrors unfold. By the middle of the story I was so shaken that old habits returned. Developers, please… release a DLC or even a third installment with a true happy ending. Bring back the alternate endings from the original game, where there was at least some light — at least a chance for Olga and Celestine to find peace. This story cannot end only in darkness. You created unforgettable characters who, after 15 years, have finally become very popular (cosplay, limited figures, and more) — don’t leave them broken like this. Right now, this feels less like a fantasy game and more like a nightmare I can’t wake from, and I can’t stop thinking about my beloved elf girls. My disappointment is immeasurable and my life is ruined. © ( Notes for readers: I write this not out of hatred for the creators but out of love for the characters. I want to see Olga and Celestine respected — given the dignity and closure they deserve. If you, too, felt betrayed by Redux’s single, crushing route, please consider supporting a petition or requesting DLC from the developers. These characters deserve more than eternal suffering.)

Best game ever made I love being a rip off version of guts and having a harem of hot elves as my wife. This game is the definition of a game for cucks and anyone who is a total degenerate. 10/10
