While at first glance this game might seem like a Hotline Miami clone. And yeah the gameplay is basically kill or be killed in one hit (Boss fights excluded). The design is fundamental different. While hotline is a game about using the environment and improvising with the weapons you find, this game is about mastering your fixed move set. You have a bionic fist which is your main melee tool except it can also be charged to smash objects in to enemies and can also parry possibly every single attack in the game even bullets. You have a medium range throwing Knife that will kill most enemies in the game even some bullet proof ones but it needs to be picked up after use althou upgrades that bypass this annoyance can be acquired. And you have your guns which have near unlimited range but also have different uses and require ammo and not always a guarantied kill. In addition to this the game lets you customize your play-stile to a large extent it has an intricate upgrade system where you dont necessarily buff you stats bur rather add additional modifiers and mehanicks on top of your existing move set. The overall gameplay loop is you entering a level dying reputedly till you learn the tempo and perfect route to kill all the enemies as fast and as efficiently and possibly stylishly as you can. Retrying after death is near instant so death is never truly frustrating. The game also features some well designed Boss fights ware the boss takes many hits to kill but you still do die after one hit but they are fun to learn and master especially once you get the parry timings down. The story is not the most amazing but its serviceable its similar to a ultra violent 90s Anime OVA. Its here more to just build atmosphere its not the main focus of the game but the story artwork is pretty good and i imagine people who like anthro character will like it. Music also fits the game its not Synthwave like people might expect from game like this but it fits the action and world perfectly in my opinion. Overall its a really enjoyable game you can finish in a weekend possibly even one day.
Edit: I just finished the story. First of all f*** you for making me cry, not once but three times. Second of all, Fantastic story. While it seemed short, it's exactly the kind of messed up dystopian story you'd expect out of a cyberpunk themed game. Looking forward to the obvious sequel! The first "Hotline Miami spiritual successor" That not only actually came out, but is also absolutely amazing. I just didn't expect it to also come with cyberpunk furries. The game has refreshing additions to the "Hotline Miami" gameplay loop. It's hard not to compare the soundtrack to HM, so I'll try not to. In it's own rights, Kusan's soundtrack is still really good. But where the game really stands out is the overall character design and art in the comics in between levels is 11/10. Absolutely no notes. Mr. Nimo is an exceptional example. Please do release the soundtrack as a DLC later on!
Cyberpunk, top-down shooter, WITH FURRIES? its like this game was made for me... Kusan : City of Wolves is such a great little game. The spin it takes on the genre is super fun, chaining together combos with all the different abilities and upgrades is very satisfying. My only complaint is that ( at the time of typing this review, at least ) the window for parrying seems suuuper small. Its hard to time it on purpose, especially with gun enemies. They hardly have a tell for when theyre about to shoot, so you kinda have to guess and hope. Bosses dont really have this issue, but trying to parry anyone else ends up being mostly accidental. ( Oh, and another small complaint... Id love a button to hold and pan the camera around, its a bit zoomed-in at times! ) Besides the gameplay, I really enjoyed the characters! The portrait artwork and comic book-style cutscenes were super charming, I found myself pretty invested even if the story admittedly moved a bit too fast. I get easily attached to animal people so Im probably a bit biased in that regard, haha. Super fun, really likeable characters, I hope to see more of this world at some point! :J
7-8/10, depending on how much you can forgive some of its flaws. A very melee focused hotline miami-like. Instead of kicking doors down you launch them at enemies with a punch, goring them instantly. There's a lot of neat ideas in the gameplay, but they're not always executed in a way that makes them fully realized. Like the parry system on the most basic ranged enemy. They don't just shoot at you and have a bullet travel, they lock onto you with a laser that WILL hit you unless you parry it, the problem is that the window on that is lightning fast, you're more likely to parry this attack if you just flail around hoping for a parry to happen, especially in the middle of a chaotic fight. The only enemy I actually hate is the laser drone, it has basically the same problem but it feels worse to fight. The bulk of the gameplay present feels good though. It's fairly simple but satisfying for most of the campaign. The upgrade system is neat and allows for some replayability. It's not overwhelming or that deep, but is satisfying enough. The ranking system is fun to chase scores for, but I find that it mostly rewards being really quick with clearing a floor, actually having style, switching up your attacks, parrying, all pale in comparison to just killing everyone in one chain, and doing it as fast as possible. There are things that should be adjusted and ironed out, especially if they do a sequel, which I'm happy to see that they leave room for, because the world and characters are good. It's a little bit of a generic cyberpunk world that does manage to feel lived in and dingy. With some things like settings and plot points lifted out of other popular cyberpunk media. The environments, art, and detail are really good. Sure it's derivative but damn if it doesn't look good. The game tells a decent story through motion comics and cutscenes, that makes it feel like it's totally open for expansion for something great. Furry cyberpunk world, I'm in. The only other things I have to say are that the campaign by the last chapter kind of falls off, chapters 1 and 2 are great, with only 1 level I would actually call bad (it's a gameplay switch-up that isn't really that well made). The last chapter is just a few ok levels that have a lot of enemies, nothing bad, nothing great. Also by the end, I put about 4-5 hours in, Overall I still recommend the game, but if you think you'd clear it quickly, buy it on sale.
