Lilitales, developed by TUNNEL No.73 and published by Kagura Games, is a dark fantasy role-playing game that blends emotional storytelling, dungeon exploration, and strategic progression into an adventure driven by loyalty, survival, and personal determination. While many fantasy RPGs focus primarily on world-ending threats or legendary heroes destined for greatness, Lilitales builds its foundation around a far more personal struggle. It tells the story of someone rejected by society, burdened by hardship, and forced to fight not only against dangerous enemies but also against fear, prejudice, and betrayal. The story follows Luna, a young woman whose difficult life begins long before the main adventure unfolds. Rumors surrounding her origins isolate her from others, leaving her to grow up in loneliness and distrust. Rather than receiving kindness or understanding, she experiences rejection from the world around her. Everything changes when she forms a connection with Jill, the princess of Grants Kingdom. Jill becomes the first person willing to see Luna as more than rumors and assumptions. Their friendship creates the emotional core that drives much of the game forward. Motivated by gratitude and loyalty, Luna devotes herself to becoming stronger so she can stand beside and protect the person who changed her life. What begins as a journey fueled by hope slowly transforms into something darker and far more dangerous. Disaster strikes during an important royal expedition, leaving devastation behind. Jill disappears under mysterious circumstances, the royal escort is destroyed, and Luna becomes the lone survivor of a catastrophe nobody fully understands. Instead of receiving support after surviving unimaginable circumstances, Luna finds herself blamed for the tragedy. Accusations quickly spread, turning her into an outcast once again. Branded a criminal and imprisoned by the kingdom she once hoped to serve, Luna loses both freedom and trust. The situation becomes even more complicated when mysterious forces connected to the disaster continue influencing events from the shadows. Forced to escape captivity, Luna begins a desperate mission to rescue Jill and uncover the truth behind the conspiracy surrounding the attack. One of Lilitales' strongest qualities comes from how seriously it treats character development. Luna feels like more than a standard fantasy protagonist. Her struggles remain personal and emotionally grounded throughout progression. Every victory feels meaningful because it connects directly to her desire to reclaim her life and protect someone important to her. Emotional investment remains high because the game consistently reinforces personal stakes rather than relying solely on larger fantasy conflicts. The dark fantasy setting contributes heavily toward atmosphere. The world presented here feels dangerous and frequently unforgiving. Themes involving prejudice, corruption, betrayal, and sacrifice shape much of the experience, giving the setting greater emotional weight. The kingdom itself does not always function as a place of safety or justice. Hidden motives and larger conspiracies create constant uncertainty, strengthening tension throughout progression. Dungeon exploration serves as the gameplay foundation supporting the narrative. Players spend significant time navigating dangerous environments while managing resources and preparing carefully for increasingly difficult encounters. Exploration rewards patience and planning rather than reckless advancement. Dungeon design encourages players to think strategically while gradually mastering progression systems over time. Combat follows a turn-based structure that places emphasis on preparation and long-term growth. Character progression steadily introduces stronger abilities and additional options that strengthen tactical flexibility during encounters. Battles reward understanding mechanics and making thoughtful decisions rather than relying purely on raw statistics. The steady sense of growth keeps progression satisfying while reinforcing Luna's development throughout the larger journey. The progression systems also benefit pacing by ensuring advancement feels meaningful. Character growth remains closely tied to exploration and story progression rather than existing independently. New abilities and improvements help maintain engagement throughout longer sessions while preventing combat from becoming repetitive. Worldbuilding becomes another major strength. The fantasy setting feels carefully developed, with locations and events contributing to larger themes rather than existing purely for visual presentation. Story developments gradually reveal larger truths surrounding Luna's circumstances while expanding understanding of the kingdom and forces shaping events behind the scenes. Visually, Lilitales embraces anime-inspired presentation that complements both the fantasy atmosphere and emotional storytelling effectively. Character designs support personality and narrative identity while environments reinforce the darker tone driving progression. The visual direction remains consistent throughout the experience, helping strengthen immersion without overwhelming the player with unnecessary spectacle. The pacing naturally favors players who enjoy narrative investment alongside gameplay progression. Those looking exclusively for constant combat may find stronger emphasis placed on storytelling and character development. However, players who appreciate fantasy RPGs built around emotional stakes and slower progression will likely find significant value here. What ultimately allows Lilitales to stand apart is how effectively it balances personal storytelling with larger fantasy adventure elements. Luna's journey never loses emotional focus even as larger mysteries and conflicts emerge. Friendship, loyalty, and perseverance remain central themes from beginning to end. Lilitales succeeds because it understands that memorable role-playing experiences often come from emotional investment as much as gameplay systems. TUNNEL No.73 creates a dark fantasy world filled with danger and mystery, but it is Luna's personal struggle that gives the adventure lasting impact. Rating: 8/10

Starting with the bad things, it feels like a weird male fantasy type narrative, and a lot of the story seems to focus some projection of women not having the intellectual capacity to be fully fleshed out humans, instead fully focusing on their physical desires. It's fine to focus on these things in a multidimensional way, but not when it's just a bunch of flat one-dimensional caricatures. The story was kind of interesting but the ending was just really sad - I thought it would be about overcoming these dehumanizing two-dimensional portrayals, but rather it's about you as the protagonist simply giving into them. I do think the setting was interesting and had a lot of fun/silly things that contributed to the gameplay - the combat and dungeon exploration was fun as somebody totally new to this genre. The desert theme I thought was really neat, Having played both the unpatched (first) and patched (second) versions, the latter definitely portrays adult relationships as being purely a decision by the man rather than by both parties (again, weird), but the actual art and things were captivating and like really professional for the most part. As a last little thing, there's a few translation things that make the game feel weird in some places (i hope unintentionally) - and I wish every character had voice actors instead of just some. Overall it's the longest I've played a game in this genre! (9.9hrs) and I do think it has some good merits to it, but definitely also things to work on--but I understand it's meant to be pure entertainment rather than something to be analyzed or thought about deeply.

This is not an easy one to recommend. If you’ve read the description and other reviews, you’ll have a good idea of what’s going on. It’s a brutal story with a few different threads, but youthful ideals colliding with hard realities is a central theme. I’m no stranger to bleak settings, but this one is so oppressive that I nearly quit several times. You spend most of the game navigating a culture that has collapsed and folded over into a base, vile regression of itself, centered around the open-air dungeon that is the city of Ishtar. Slavery, depravity, and deception are the order of the day here. It’s so detestable that it almost seems a crime that the sun even rises over such a place. I can’t say I ever had “fun” here, but that seems not to be the intent. Credit where it’s due to the writers, they understand evil and are not afraid to depict it in unflinching detail. I haven’t played this one in a while, but its world has stuck with me, for better or worse. Combat is not where you’ll spend most of your time, but what is here is pretty good, if a bit basic. Generally you’ll be using melee as well as MP-based skills and spells, managing your meter, and learning which monsters are vulnerable to what. There are some interesting strategic considerations, such as times when you must target yourself to shake off an enemy that is debilitating you. You’ll also spend as much time running solo as you will with allies, and both situations offer different strategic challenges and possibilities. Being able to adapt to changing circumstances is key. Overall, the presentation is great—the art is beautiful, the main characters are voiced, the music is infectious. It all does a lot to make the experience more immersive and compelling. It’s a small thing, but I also appreciate the attention paid to character sprites during combat: there is an attack frame, distressed expressions and a bloody effect splashed when hit, tired faces for status effects and low HP. It goes a long way in making combat feel more consequential than just “numbers going down,” as you see in even some of the best DRPGs. There seems to be a sizable postgame here, although I didn’t get too deep into it. Frankly I was exhausted by that point. The game makes it clear that there is no further H content in the postgame, which may be a positive or a negative for you. All that to say: this is a good game, with a compelling story and top notch production value for its price and genre. But make sure you’re ready for just how awful its world will be. I’m not sure I was.
