Ask any Metal Max affreciando and "this" counts as the worst one in the series. Yet if you come into Metal Max Xeno Reborn as a green recruit with reasonable expectations it is surprisingly compelling. If you ever pondered "What if Japan made their own version of Fallout or Stalker on a modest budget?" this is your answer. The big draw here is the vehicular combat and various ways you can upgrade everything from tanks to refurbished buses into mobile metal monsters of mass scale mayhem. Atop that you can hoof it on foot to explore caves and buried ruins when the space is too narrow to accommodate your sweet ride. Combat happens in real time yet the action slows down to let you think about your tactics. It's comparable to the "bullet time gimmick" in games like Red Dead Redemption coupled with a classic J-rpg menu interface that straddles the bar somewhere between the more classic Final Fantasies and Xenosaga. Sometime in the future the artificial intelligence NOAH decided humans were bad for the environment so it took control of every functional combat drone and missile silo to wipe the slate clean. You would think that would mean all you would have to deal with are AI controlled tanks, planes, and turret equipped trains but oddly enough there are also sand sharks, dinosaurs fused with mounted artillery, giant ants, radiated mole rats, metal alligators, bomb dropping mecha pigeons, and mutated plants. (Methinks some top secret hot lab monstrosities breached their containment zones after the scientists and security guards watching over them keeled over and died!) The characters have all been through "a lot" and I appreciate how Metal Max doesn't coddle the player. Toni escaped from a tribe that was going to use her as a breeding slave. During that exodus she lost her father. One of your future best friends is a drunkard mechanic guzzling his sorrows away one bottle at a time. Your other soon to be best friend Dylan used to be a scavenger and a raider. Meanwhile you were a victim of cruel experimentation that left you with a cybernetic arm and not much else. No one has had an easy life out in the wasteland and it shows! Many have stated the narrative in Xeno Reborn is lackluster but thus far I strongly disagree. Both the world and characters have layers and considerable depth. You just have to talk to your people and read what they have to say! Imagine playing a stranger anime version of Fallout or Stalker without the idiotic micro management. Your vehicles and the weapons mounted onto them take damage but are repaired for free when you return to home base. You can quick travel to different location hubs after they appear on your map. (With no penalties) Meanwhile when you are on foot your fire arms and melee weapons all have unlimited ammo and infinite durability. Oh, and the mcs in this game are mostly pleasant to look at. For me that's a godsend! I realize this is a version of the game where art assets were changed, dlc was promised but not delivered, and certain cut scenes were removed. I utterly detest censoring a game for the mythological "modern audience" that doesn't truly exist beyond some loud mouth sanctimonious virtue signalers, clueless tourists, and brain dead social influencers. Creators should be able to make whatever they want in accordance with their vision then let the buyer decide. Any tampering beyond that is unnecessary bureaucratic bloat wrapped in smooth brained pseudo intellectual sophistry! However, even though this is a flawed "director's cut" of the original it's a good J-rpg that deviates from the Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior mold in all the best ways. If you're still unsure simply wait for a decent sale like I did! Pros + A J-rpg with enjoyable vehicular combat + Easily understood yet robust vehicular upgrade system and character growth system. + Interesting take on "The post apocalyptic wasteland". Gave me some EDF, Trigun, and God Eater vibes. + Playable characters are relatable and fun to use. (Once you get to know them better) +Pochi (Cute shibe doggo with a mounted gun turret on his back. Sheer friggin cinema!) + A game plus playthru will unlock the character portraits done by the original artist. (But why not just have the two art styles selectable from the beginning?) Cons - Game makes you rough it. Limited guidance and not the best tutorial. - Abrupt difficulty swings among the varied enemy encounters. You constantly flip flop between rising in ranks as the nay invincible mega chad right before crashing out like an awkward nerd getting shoved into a locker! -People expect a differently named re-release of an original game to be "better", not butchered with removed content and needless censorship. A pity too because I think Metal Max would do great here in the west with the right people under the hood! Tip: Buy the metal detector asap!

I think this game is pretty chill and fun! You roam around the desert hunting monsters in a big ol' tank with a dog and friends~ Lots of stuff to collect if you want. Different approaches for how you can fight. Different ways to build your tank. And the soundtrack is really good! I don't think this game is going to really Wow you but it's good time imo. Sometimes you just want a relaxed paced rpg type of game to chill out at the end of the day. Definitely glad I picked it up. Also despite what the steam page says you CAN use a keyboard to play this game if you really want.

The mixed reviews here need an explanation. Most of them come from those that played the original and don't like the changes made in Reborn. If you're like me and never played the original version, you'll be able to judge the game on its own merits. Having said that, I had an absolute blast with this game!

Pretty sweet little treat of an RPG with a unique apocalyptic setting. There's a mix of regular combat and vehicular combat involving various vehicles like tanks and buggies with all kinds of upgrades for the vehicles available. It's super neat customizing each one and you can build some pretty over powered setups. You also get a doggo with a gun or cannon strapped to it's back so that's a big win for me. While you roam the wastelands you'll encounter all kinds of cool looking creatures and some neat looking bosses. Not a ton of story content but honestly the setting alone makes up for that to me. You'll find some survivors while you explore and learn a bit about what happened as you go but otherwise your mission is pretty clear from the start. Take out the big bad machines bent on human extinction.

It's not a story game at all, so don't expect Final Fantasy with tanks. But if you like tanks, grinding, and jumping sand dunes in a city bus strapped with 5 cannons as big as itself with a dog riding on top who also has his own cannon strapped to him, this might be the game for you. It is for me, though it took me a few tries to get into it. It's not a great game by conventional measures, but it sure scratches a particular itch. I hope Cygames brings more of this series to Steam.
