Milo and the Magpies is a short, nine chapter adventure game by Johan Scherft and Second Maze studios about a cat trying to find his way home past a family of birds. I'm mainly giving this a good rating as I am a fan of the hand-drawn art style and Johan's work for Rusty Lake. The puzzles are sometimes obtuse. On the bright side, my cat was interested enough in the sound effects to sit on my desk and watch the ending. The secret clickable areas are oddly spaced, with some present from the first moment of the scene, and others only available near the end of the chapter. Many of them are also odd, considering the tone of the rest of the game. I had to use a guide to find the last collectible. At least the chapter select menu is helpful for tracking those down.
Milo and the Magpies is a short, relaxing point and click game about a cat named Milo who gets lost and is trying to find his way home. You help Milo move through different garden areas and solve small puzzles hidden in the environment. The game is very beautiful. All the art is hand painted by the developer, so every level looks like a moving painting. Some areas feel like you are exploring artwork in a museum, especially a few levels that stand out with very detailed and calm visuals. The gameplay is also very simple. You click on objects to interact with them. Sometimes you need to drag items to the right place to make something happen. Most puzzles are easy, but a few can be a bit harder and need more careful clicking. If you get stuck, there is a walkthrough in the menu that can help. Overall, it is a calm and pretty game that feels like playing inside a painting. It is a good choice if you like relaxing puzzle games and cats!
